NGT asks DDA to provide timeline to remove illegal encroachment from o zone and yamuna flood plain zone
New Delhi:
National Green Tribunal
has asked Delhi Development Authority to provide a timeline for removing illegal encroachments from the 'O' zone and Yamuna floodplain zone. Last year in Jan, the tribunal took suo-moto cognisance of a TOI report stating that 161 illegal colonies in the 'O' zone were making the river water toxic.
The report stated that 161 colonies in the O zone of the floodplain, with 2.3 lakh households, were identified as not connected to a sewer network. This means that sewage from these areas continues to flow untreated into the river, contaminating its water. The NGT earlier observed that the news item raised substantial issues relating to compliance with environmental norms.
"In the order dated August 30 last year, the tribunal took note of Regulation 7 NCT Regulation of 2019, which does not confer or recognise any right concerning the land falling in the O zone or Yamuna flood zone. Hence, these unauthorised colonies existing in the O zone of the Yamuna floodplain zone are required to be cleared," NGT said earlier.
