Nikhil criticises Congress govt for neglecting farmers and development

Chikkamagaluru: JD(S) Youth Wing state president Nikhil Kumaraswamy took exception against the Congress govt and charged that the govt is not in a position to supply fertilisers to farmers. He claimed that agriculture minister N Cheluvarayaswamy has fallen into a deep sleep. He was addressing the gathering during the JD(S) membership drive of the Sringeri assembly constituency in Koppa on Thursday. The state govt and the agriculture minister have no concern for the farming community. When Union minister HD Kumaraswamy was the chief minister, transformers were installed for just Rs 25,000, but today the govt charges Rs 2.5 lakh, he said. Nikhil strongly opposed forest minister Eshwar Khandre's order prohibiting cattle grazing in the state's forest areas and said these irresponsible statements can result in the collapse of govt's administration. "In the Sringeri constituency, roads were full of potholes everywhere. The govt turned bankrupt to fix them," he mocked. Many people have built houses here, but they have not been given title deeds. In no way have the Congress legislators shown any commitment to the development of the constituency, he criticised. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like An Australian MBA with IIM certification IIMK UWA Undo Highlighting the death of a residential school girl, Shamitha, he said he would bring the issue to the notice of Kumaraswamy and assured a transparent investigation. The court instructed to conduct zilla panchayat and taluk panchayat elections, but the govt lacks the confidence to hold elections. The Congress is looting people's money, he criticised the Congress. Congress held a Sadhana Sammelan in Mysuru, but the Congress should answer what achievements have been made in the state. "For the Congress govt, political infighting is more important than the development of the state," he criticised.

Food processing enterprises can create new jobs: Minister

Mandya: District minister N Cheluvarayaswamy emphasised the potential of food processing enterprises in creating self-employment opportunities, especially for young farmers seeking sustainable livelihoods. The event aimed to raise awareness about the PM Formalisation of Micro Food Processing Enterprises (PM-FME) scheme and was jointly conducted by the Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Karnataka State Agricultural Produce Processing and Export Corporation Ltd (KAPPEC), district administration, zilla panchayat, and the department of agriculture. The minister symbolically extracted oil using a wooden press, reinforcing the importance of indigenous food processing techniques. "Most families in the district own some land. Even with just an acre, integrated farming practices can yield significant results at lower costs," he said, urging farmers to look beyond conventional cultivation. He noted that higher education should not be viewed as a pathway only to white-collar jobs, adding that the PM-FME scheme offers a practical alternative for self-employment. "Education gives us awareness, not necessarily a profession. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Gold Is Surging in 2025 — Smart Traders Are Already In IC Markets Learn More Undo Entrepreneurship, especially in food processing, can be just as rewarding," he said. Cheluvarayaswamy highlighted that 6,000 food processing units are planned under the scheme, with financial support of up to Rs 15 lakh, including Rs 6 lakh from the Centre and Rs 9 lakh from the state as subsidy. He proudly noted that Mandya ranks second in the state in terms of availing loans and subsidies under this initiative. "With the right training and support, farmers can earn between Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh a month through food processing," he said, citing examples of success in integrated farming. Referring to Karnataka's performance, the minister added that Union agriculture minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan lauded the state's agriculture department as being among the most effective in the country. Ramesh Bandisiddegowda, chairman of Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation and Srirangapatna MLA, said food processing was not new to Mandya. "Our ancestors engaged in it actively. Now, by processing and branding local produce, we can reclaim that tradition and boost rural incomes," he said. Zilla Panchayat CEO KR Nandini said that while Mandya is agriculturally rich, farmer incomes remain low. "We need to diversify beyond paddy, sugarcane, and coconut. Crops like avocado (butter fruit) thrive here and have strong export potential," she noted. She encouraged farmers to collaborate with horticulture and animal husbandry departments to adopt integrated farming and increase earnings. "Processed products command three to four times higher prices. If we tap into both domestic and global markets, the returns can be significant." Highlighting the rising demand for ready-to-eat and value-added food, Nandini said this trend could be a game-changer for local farmers. "Value addition is the future. Food processing is not just about profits—it's about creating employment and empowering rural families." .

Poor, elderly must get health check-ups done at their doorstep: Minister

Mandya: District minister N Cheluvarayaswamy on Monday observed that wealth, status, and power are futile without good health, and emphasised "Health is the greatest asset in life. " Speaking after inaugurating the Gruha Arogya Yojana workshop and the statewide expansion of the scheme, along with the release of the ASHA handbook, at MIMS Teaching Hospital auditorium, the minister highlighted that health cannot be fully managed through laws or regulations. However, the state is committed to ensure public well-being through initiatives like the Gruha Arogya Yojana, which delivers door-to-door health check-ups. He urged the people to utilise the scheme designed to assist the poor, elderly, and those unable to visit hospitals. Reflecting on societal changes, he noted that past generations enjoyed healthier lifestyles and chemical-free agriculture, unlike today's altered food habits and farming practices, which negatively impact health. "Our health is our responsibility, and we must prioritise it," he stressed. The minister also outlined the govt's efforts to establish community, taluk, district, and mother-and-child hospitals in Mandya, promising ongoing improvements in healthcare infrastructure. The ASHA handbook, aimed at guiding workers in implementing the scheme, was released during the event. Under the Gruha Arogya Yojana, ASHA workers visit rural homes to collect health data from individuals over 30 using the NCD app, focusing on 14 non-communicable diseases. The data is uploaded, and patients needing treatment are referred to community health officers at sub-centres. These officers conduct examinations, offer tele-consultations with doctors at PHCs, and provide free medications for conditions like diabetes and hypertension on-site. Other non-communicable diseases are screened, with referrals to primary, community, taluk, or district hospitals for further treatment. Mandya MLA P Ravikumar, Maddur MLA KM Uday, DC Kumara, and others were present.

Former bonded labourers get essential identity documents

Mandya: The zilla panchayat launched a programme to bring 86 identified former bonded labourers into the mainstream by providing them with 13 essential govt identity documents, announced district minister N Cheluvarayaswamy. Speaking at the inauguration of an identity card distribution and health check-up programme for families of former bonded labourers in Maddur taluk, he emphasised the govt's commitment to eradicating bonded labour, which is illegal yet persists due to poverty and lack of awareness. Despite the illegality of bonded labour, some individuals continue to fall victim to it, due to economic hardship. The minister highlighted that among the 86 identified individuals—82 men and 4 women—the lack of govt documents was a barrier to accessing benefits. "To address this, the district administration is providing these individuals with critical documents, including Aadhaar cards, so that they can avail benefits of the govt schemes and lead dignified, self-reliant lives. Health check-ups are also being conducted as part of the initiative," he said. Maddur MLA KM Uday detailed the documents being provided, which include Aadhaar cards, caste and income certificates, ration cards, voter IDs, personal bank savings accounts, pensions under various schemes, Ayushman Bharat health cards, health insurance (PMJJBY, PMSBY), e-shram cards, UDID cards, Bhagyalakshmi scheme benefits, and MGNREGA job cards. These documents aim to empower former bonded labourers to live independently. ZP CEO KR Nandini stated that under the 'Sanjivini' campaign, eligible women from these families are being integrated into self-help groups under the NRLM scheme to access benefits and achieve self-reliance. Additionally, the RSETI programme is providing vocational training to eligible youth from these families to enhance their employability. "Under the 'e-swattu' and 'my identity' campaigns, the district achieved a milestone by providing over 49 e-property documents, 172 e-shram cards, more than 180 self-help group registrations, 10 caste and income certificates, and over 180 PMJJBY/PMSBY and UDID cards, along with MGNREGA benefits, to support the self-respect and livelihoods of former bonded labourers and their families. Additionally, the Bharatinagar GP is distributing free solar lights and sewing machines to these families to further aid their rehabilitation," she explained.

Min warns officials against neglecting farmer welfare projects

Mysuru: Agriculture minister N Cheluvarayaswamy on Friday warned that strict action would be initiated against officials and staff who show negligence in the implementation of projects aimed at farmers' welfare. Speaking to reporters after a review meeting of the officials from the department in the Mysuru division at Naganahalli Agricultural Training Center, located on the outskirts of Mysuru, he emphasised the importance of ensuring the supply of required seeds and fertilisers to the farmers. Currently, there is no shortage of fertilisers in any part of the state. However, according to a decision by the Union govt, the supply of urea will be reduced by 50% in the coming days, he said. Officials from Mysuru, Mandya, Chamarajanagar, Kodagu, Hassan, Chikkamagaluru, Dakshina Kannada, and Udupi districts attended the meeting. Agricultural commissioner YS Patil, director GT Putra, watershed development department director Mohammad Parvez Banthanall, managing director of the State Seed Corporation Anup, and managing director of the Seed Certification Institute Sadananda were present at the meeting. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for a reduction in the use of urea to maintain soil fertility. Over the past two years, awareness has been raised in the state about the impacts of chemicals and pesticides, along with the benefits of organic farming and integrated agriculture, he said. The minister also informed that awareness should be raised among farmers to reduce the use of chemicals and pesticides, considering soil fertility, environmental protection, and human health. Priority is being given to agricultural mechanisation and value addition to agricultural products in the state. Equipment and micro-irrigation tools are being distributed with subsidies on an unprecedented scale, he said. The Krishi Bhagya scheme is being extended to all sectors, with a target of constructing 24,000 farm ponds being met, he added. In 2023-24, drought conditions were prevalent. Responding to farmers' difficulties, compensation of Rs 3,454 crore was provided. In 2024-25, food production exceeded the target with 153 lakh tons produced. This year, the target is 148.48 lakh metric tons of food grains and 12.20 lakh tons of oilseeds, the agriculture minister stated. He mentioned that he is touring the state to review the implementation of agricultural projects and the agricultural situation, providing advice and guidance through meetings with officials in all divisions.
