Erin becomes first hurricane in the Atlantic this season

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Erin has become the first hurricane of the 2025 Atlantic Season. Sustained winds are now at 75 mph. This puts the storm at Category 1 strength. Its current movement is to the WNW at 18 mph. Further strengthening is forecasted to occur over the weekend. By Sunday, Erin will likely become a major Category 3 hurricane. Potentially a Category 4 hurricane with sustained winds of 140 mph by Monday. Thankfully, impacts to the U.S. are not anticipated. Most weather models are taking this storm back out into the Atlantic basin next week, away from the east coast. Heavy rainfall is expected along the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico through Sunday. Tropical storm force winds may also be seen in these locations. Details of the crash are limited but officials with the Department of Transportation and Development are reporting traffic is being diverted to Bullard Avenue.
