China Reacts to Trump Taiwan Arms Report: ‘Red Line'

China warned the U.S. of its "first red line that cannot be crossed" after a report that President Donald Trump intends to increase arms sales to Taiwan. The Trump Administration will lift weapons sales to Taiwan to higher levels than during his first administration, Reuters reported, citing U.S. officials, to put more military pressure on Beijing. "The Taiwan question is at the core of China's core interests and the first red line that cannot be crossed in China-US relations," Lin Jian, spokesman for the Chinese foreign ministry, said at a press briefing on Friday. "China firmly opposes the US' arms sales to China's Taiwan region, urges the US to abide by the One China principle, and the three China-US joint communiqués, especially the August 17 communiqué of 1982. "Stop selling arms to Taiwan and stop creating new factors that could lead to tensions in the Taiwan Strait. China is firmly resolved in defending its national sovereignty and territorial integrity." Paraglider Flies into ‘Death Zone,' Miraculously Survives

A Chinese paraglider has survived accidentally flying 8,500 meters into the sky - a "death zone" altitude. Peng Yujiang, 55, was flung into the "death zone" (above 8,000 meters), where the pressure of oxygen is considered insufficient to sustain human life, while testing new equipment over the Qilian mountains, in north-west China, on Saturday. A cloud suck (an updraft or air current), pushed him higher, into a cloud formation, when he was 3,000 meters above sea level. "It was terrifying, everything was white," Peng told Chinese state media the China Media Group, "I couldn't see any direction." "Without the compass, I wouldn't have known which way I was going. I thought I was flying straight, but in reality, I was spinning," he said. This is a developing story - more to follow. Why Flags Are At Half-Staff In New York Today

Flags across the state of New York will be flying at half-staff today to honor a recently passed retired state police sergeant. Governor Kathy Hochul directed that flags be half-staff today for First Sergeant Michael E. Snell, who passed away on Tuesday, May 20. It is believed he passed away due to a condition that came as a result of his assignment in and around the World Trade Center following the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. Governor Hochul said: "First Sergeant Snell honorably served the people of New York State for 23 years, making the ultimate sacrifice for his fellow New Yorkers when it mattered the most. On behalf of New York State, I extend my deepest gratitude for First Sergeant Snell's contribution to the protection of our state, and send my heartfelt condolences to his family." China Responds to Trump Freeze on Student Visa Interviews

China said there should be no disruption to education and urged the U.S. to protect the rights of international students after it emerged that the Trump Administration is freezing all student visa interviews at U.S. embassies and consulates. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said China "upholds that normal education cooperation and academic exchanges should not be disrupted" at a press conference on Wednesday morning. "We urge the U.S. to effectively safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of all international students, including Chinese students overseas," she said. Secretary of State Marco Rubio had signed and sent a diplomatic cable on Tuesday ordering the pause to student visa interviews and outlining a shift in vetting procedures. The Trump Administration is also considering a policy that would require all foreign students applying to study in the U.S. to undergo social media screening. A crackdown on student visas is part of a broader effort to sharply reduce immigration to the U.S. This is a developing article. More to follow.
