Donald Trump Changes His Tune on NATO
President Donald Trump has expressed his support for the collective defense offered by NATO in a reversal of his previous criticism of the alliance. Trump was asked by the BBC whether he still thought the alliance was "obsolete" as he had previously said, but he replied: "NATO is now becoming the opposite of that." He added that the alliance was now "paying their own bills." The U.S. president had called on NATO's European members to increase their defense spending and pay a larger share of the alliance's budget. Trump's latest comments come after he attended a NATO summit in The Hague last month, where he signaled a greater commitment to the bloc. This is a developing story. More to follow. China Responds to Lindsey Graham Russia Threat
China hit back at "illegal unilateral sanctions" after U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham said Beijing would be among those to feel the pain of his proposed legislation, which would slap up to a 500 percent secondary tariff on those trading with Russia. Graham, a Republican from South Carolina, said the legislation has bipartisan support in Congress, and it comes as U.S. President Donald Trump threatens new secondary tariffs against Russia to force Moscow to make peace in Ukraine. Trump touted a 100 percent secondary tariff, but Graham's bill would give him the power to do five times that. Large-scale Chinese oil purchases have been a vital crutch for the sanctions-hit Russian economy during the ongoing invasion of Ukraine. Lin Jian, spokesman for the Chinese foreign ministry, said at a press briefing on Tuesday, July 15, Beijing's position on ending the Ukraine war has been consistent and clear, and that it can only be achieved through dialogue and negotiation. "China firmly opposes any illegal unilateral sanctions and long-arm jurisdiction," Lin said, the state-run Global Times reported. "There are no winners in a tariff war, and coercion and pressure cannot solve problems. "It's hoped all parties will further foster an environment and accumulate conditions to advance the political settlement of the Ukraine crisis, and take more actions that are conducive to peace talks." ‘Very Serious': Russia Says Trump Sent Signal to Ukraine
The Kremlin said U.S. President Donald Trump signaled to Ukraine that it should continue the war after he said he would send more weapons to Kyiv and threatened Russia with secondary sanctions unless it makes peace. Dmitry Peskov, spokesman for the Russian President Vladimir Putin, called Trump's statement "very serious" in his daily press briefing on Tuesday, July 15. Peskov said Putin would need time to analyze Trump's remarks, some of which were directed at him, and to decide whether to comment. Trump said he was considering a 100 percent secondary tariff on countries trading with Russia unless Putin makes peace in 50 days. He also said he would send more Patriot air defense missiles to Ukraine, and that European NATO allies would fund more "sophisticated" offensive American weapons for Kyiv. "For now, one thing can be said unequivocally: It seems that such decisions made in Washington, in NATO countries, and directly in Brussels, are perceived by the Ukrainian side not as a signal toward peace, but as a signal toward the continuation of war," Peskov said, originally in Russian. McDonald's Manager Brutally Killed by Employee Inside Restaurant-Police
A McDonald's manager was stabbed to death at work by an employee after an argument at a Detroit-area restaurant on Thursday, police have said. The victim has been named as Jennifer Harris, a 36-year-old mother-of-six who had worked at the Eastpointe McDonald's, on 9 Mile and Schroeder Avenue, for 15 years. "My momma was a good person, she was the best mom anybody could ever ask for," Antonia Griffin told reporters. "My momma, she woke up every day to work for us. My momma died trying to take care of us!" Harris had asked the employee to leave following an argument between the pair, police said. The employee went home but then returned with a kitchen knife and stabbed Harris multiple times shortly before 8 a.m., police said. The suspect tried to run out of the restaurant after the attack but a customer with a gun fired a warning shot and detained the suspect, police added. Eastpointe Police Department's Lieutenant Alex Holish said: "That's unexplainable to me. Verbal disputes happen every day, and they should stay there. Verbal disputes happen, and they can mediate or talk to management later and try to settle the dispute like adults. No dispute should ever result in violence, especially a homicide." Yusef Alcodray, who owns the franchise site, said: "We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident, and our hearts go out to the victim's family and loved ones. Violence of any kind is unacceptable in my restaurants, and we are taking this matter extremely serious, as the safety and well-being of our employees and customers is our top priority. We are fully cooperating with law enforcement as they conduct their investigation, and the restaurant will remain closed until further notice." This is a developing story. Updates to follow. Mark Carney Responds to Donald Trump's 35% Tariff Threat to Canada
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney defended his country's efforts to stop the flow of fentanyl and said Ottawa is strengthening its trade partnerships across the world in response to U.S. President Donald Trump's tariff letter. Trump wrote to Carney to inform him that, from August 1, Canada will face a 35 percent import tariff after the two sides failed to reach a deal during the recent pause. The American leader said he would consider revising the 35 percent tariff "if Canada works with me to stop the flow of Fentanyl". "Throughout the current trade negotiations with the United States, the Canadian government has steadfastly defended our workers and businesses," Carney said in a statement posted to X. "We will continue to do so as we work towards the revised deadline of August 1. "Canada has made vital progress to stop the scourge of fentanyl in North America. We are committed to continuing to work with the United States to save lives and protect communities in both our countries. "We are building Canada strong. The federal government, provinces and territories are making significant progress in building one Canadian economy. We are poised to build a series of major new projects in the national interest. "We are strengthening our trading partnerships throughout the world." This is a breaking news story. Updates to follow.
