Pete Carroll Drops Revealing Commentary About Geno Smith
Pete Carroll Drops Revealing Commentary About Geno Smith originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Las Vegas Raiders are being built in a completely different manner ahead of the 2025 NFL season. General manager John Spytek and head coach Pete Carroll placed a premium on adding competition with each of their offseason moves. Advertisement There will be various battles during OTAs, minicamp and training camp that will sort out exactly who will be getting snaps for the Silver and Black. One of the only positions on the roster, however, where competition will not be seen is at quarterback. Spytek and Carroll went out and got their guy this offseason when they traded a third-round pick to the Seattle Seahawks for veteran Geno Smith. Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Geno Smith and head coach Pete Camporeale-Imagn Images While Smith is a shoo-in to start this season, that has not always been the case for him during his 11-year NFL career. In fact, when he first arrived in Seattle under Carroll, he was the backup for two whole seasons before earning a starting spot. Advertisement Carroll spoke to the media on Monday about this aspect of Smith's character, and it was incredibly revealing of why he advocated for a reunion in Las Vegas. "Geno just embraced it right from the beginning," Carroll said. "I've never been around a guy who was so consistently focused on 'I could be playing the very next play and so I've got to be ready.' He did it for years .... We have a lot of common language and common experience. Our communication is tops." Smith was a two-time Pro Bowler under coach Carroll in Seattle, and he won the 2022 NFL Comeback Player of the Year Award. He also led the league in completion percentage during the 2022 season, making good on 69.8% of his passes. The following season, Smith led the NFL with four comebacks in the fourth quarter and five game-winning drives (via Pro Football Reference). He took a step back last season with Mike MacDonald as the head coach in Seattle, but another resurgence is expected thanks to Carroll. Advertisement Another thing that speaks to Smith's character is his team-friendly contract extension that he signed. A two-year, $75 million extension is a gross underpay for this level of quarterback, especially in the current market. However, Smith has always put the team above himself, and he will continue to do so with the Las Vegas Raiders this season. It's one of the many reasons that he and Pete Carroll have the level of trust that they do, and that should turn into wins for the Silver and Black. NFL free agency: Browns bring back Joe Flacco on one-year deal
NFL free agency: Browns bring back Joe Flacco on one-year deal The Cleveland Brown2025s are bringing back fan-favorite quarterback Joe Flacco on a one-year deal. The team promised to overhaul its quarterback room heading into the offseason, and thus far, two new names have been added—well, one new name and one reunion. Flacco has inked a deal worth a base of $4 million and up to $13 million in incentives. This indicates that there is a chance that Flacco could be the starting quarterback once again in 2025. Flacco is, of course, most notable for leading the Browns to a 4-1 record after filling in as the starting quarterback. He went on to win the NFL Comeback Player of the Year Award. He now joins Kenny Pickett as a new face in the quarterback room from a year ago. Flacco is also likely to be joined by a rookie quarterback in under two weeks as well as the Browns hold five top-104 picks in the draft. It is unlikely that name will be Shedeur Sanders as the team looks inclined to select Colorado wide receiver Travis Hunter with the No. 2 overall pick in the draft. For now, at least Browns fans get to recall the bright times that Flacco brought during the 2023 playoff run. Can this be a building block toward rebuilding the foundation and culture of the Cleveland Browns? It won't be a long-term move, but it can serve as a hard reset after an abysmal 2024 season. Welcome back, Joe. Let's get to work.

Who will Bills' Damar Hamlin face for the 2024 NFL Comeback Player of the Year tonight?
Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin has been named a finalist for the 2024 NFL Comeback Player of the Year Award. We will soon know his fate. Hamlin is a finalist for the honor for a second-straight year. In 2023, Hamlin was assumed to be the winner but quarterback Joe Flacco was surprisingly picked. Last season, while named a finalist, Hamlin did not make big contributions to the Bills. His nomination was linked to his return to Buffalo's roster following his episode with cardiac arrest. That will, and should, factor in now as well… but Hamlin has continued to add to his incredible journey in 2024. Hamlin has earned starting snaps on the Bills defense and played well. Hamlin has recorded his first-career interception this past season, too. The winner will be announced tonight, Thursday Feb. 6 at 9 p.m. during the NFL Awards ceremony. Here are all of the finalists for the honor in 2024:
