The Inside Story of How Bills LT Dion Dawkins Helped Create 'Protector of the Year'

THE COLONY, Texas — As the first day of the eighth annual offensive line masterminds summit wrapped up, all eyes in the COSM Dallas dome hall turned to the Bills' Dion Dawkins. Perennial Pro Bowler and recent retiree Terron Armstead, moderating a panel of Hall of Fame linemen, took a moment to shout out Buffalo's left tackle for spearheading the campaign that led to the creation of the "Protector of the Year." Beginning this season, the award will be presented annually at "NFL Honors" to the league's top offensive lineman. The room — filled with O-line greats past and present, in addition to rising stars at both the college and NFL levels, plus coaches and talent evaluators — broke out into applause. Standing in the corner, Dawkins took it all in, busting out a wide smile. "It was something that was mandatory for football," Dawkins said of the award. The Bills' four-time Pro Bowl left tackle told me about the "multiyear" campaign he led to create the honor, which was unveiled by the league in May. The winner will be decided annually by a panel of former offensive linemen: LeCharles Bentley, Jason Kelce, Shaun O'Hara, Orlando Pace, Will Shields and Andrew Whitworth. Along with Dawkins, Whitworth played an integral role in advocating for the award. Dawkins told me that they pushed the lengthy campaign through to the finish line at last season's Super Bowl. Dawkins, with Hall of Famer Pace at his side for support, approached NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell at his Super Bowl party. "I was like, 'Rog,'" Dawkins said. "Not one of us could ever say we were the best. We don't have no trophy to say we're the best. … We don't have anything that can show we're the best offensive lineman during our time for a season. We need that award. "He's like, 'Dion, you're right. I'm ready to listen. I'm here. Let's do it.' So we did it. Call after call after call after call. Meeting after meeting after meeting after meeting. Name [for the award]. This, that — long list of all that stuff. Then we had the press conference. Now, it's official." The Protector of the Year winner will be selected based on skill metrics (e.g. pass block win rate, run block win rate, penalties, sacks allowed), taking into account impact, leadership, durability and strength of opponent as well. Offensive linemen were previously ineligible for most on-field awards. "Everybody says, 'He was a great protector.'" Dawkins said. "'Yeah, he was a great lineman. Yeah, he was a lineman for Jim Kelly. Yeah, he was the lineman for [Donovan] McNabb, Michael Vick,' somebody like that. But what good is it to play a sport or to do something and not be able to win an award? "Like, can you imagine if there was no MVP trophy?" he continued. "Can you imagine if there was no passing title? Can you also imagine if there was no sack title? Or no Defensive Player of the Year? Or no Offensive Player of the Year? If there was no NBA MVP, what would LeBron James be? Just another good player. "As a lineman, I want to know who the best protector is. Who's the best? And if it's not me, cool — now, I know where I'm at. Now, I know where I was ranked. Cool, no I can fight for it. Simple as that. Now, the big boys have something to fight for. And I love it." Dawkins also discussed his quarterback, Josh Allen. The three-time Pro Bowler now has an NFL MVP award after this past season, but he hasn't reached a Super Bowl as he enters Year 8. Allen is 0-4 against Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs in the playoffs, including January's AFC Championship Game loss to Kansas City. Allen's mentality, Dawkins explained, is not the problem in Buffalo. "Josh is going to be Josh. Josh doesn't have to do nothing different," Dawkins told me. "Josh is the best that he can be. The reflection is, everybody around him has to be the best that they can be for us to get over that hump. Of course, everybody is like, 'Is Josh Allen going to do it for the Buffalo Bills?' Josh Allen is going to do what he's been doing, and that's be great. Now, all of us have to be great with him, consistently. Make every block. Catch every pass. Kick every kick. Run down to make every tackle. Once we do that, the rest is the rest. "He's one of them dudes," he added of Allen. "You can't compare him to nothing else, man. He walks through, you feel his presence." Dawkins made his presence felt at the offensive line masterminds summit, hosted by O-line guru Duke Manyweather and Eagles right tackle Lane Johnson. Wearing a shirt of himself on Day 1 of the event, Dawkins gave an impromptu speech about his mentality in front of the 200-person room, showing his engaging and confident persona. "When I walk on the field, I literally say I'm the baddest motherf---er here," he told the room. " I don't give a f---. I'll tell you, 'I'll talk s--- and I'll beat your ass.'" Entering his 10th season, the 31-year-old Dawkins was one of the handful of greats whom college and younger NFL offensive linemen gravitated to during the summit's breakout sessions, where players could get advice and wisdom. "People don't want to be linemen. People want to be skinny guys," Dawkins said of his approach to mentorship. "But to make people want to be big guys, you have to be cool and be around big guys, right? You have to stay in the culture. "Guys are growing up watching music videos," he continued. "You have to know what the world likes. I enjoy being that for the young guys. They look up to it. They're like, 'This dude is cool. He's normal. He's not a robot. He's keeping it real. He's telling his pros and cons. He's a normal dude.'" One who's not afraid to be himself, taking pride in a big win he secured for the overlooked bodyguards of the NFL. Jalen Hurts gains early MVP backing from a national voice

A national writer gives Jalen Hurts some early MVP momentum. It's hard to believe that Jalen Hurts is still so young, given all the discussions and stories surrounding him. He carries himself with a maturity typically seen in someone well beyond his years—maybe even a 15-year veteran. It's refreshing to witness such a high level of responsibility and composure from someone so young, and mentioning this never gets old. The Philadelphia Eagles star turns 27 years old on August 7. It certainly doesn't feel like that. Then again, maybe it does. His run with the Oklahoma Sooners feels like it was a dozen years ago. His three seasons in Tuscaloosa feel like they were 20 years ago. So much has changed since then. Oklahoma is now part of the SEC. College football expanded its playoff field. Meanwhile, in the NFL, the Philadelphia Eagles have visited the Super Bowl stage twice. The team has earned a second Lombardi Trophy for their efforts, and Jalen Hurts is the reigning MVP of football's biggest game. It's noteworthy that he is now being mentioned by a national voice as an early candidate for the Most Valuable Player award at the NFL Honors next February. An NFL writer does his part to jumpstart some early Jalen Hurts MVP buzz In a world where Jalen Hurts can earn the Super Bowl MVP trophy and continue his freefall in Chris Simms' annual QB ranking, it's nice to see someone give him some respect. Grant Gordon recently dropped a list of players who could deliver their respective franchises a regular-season MVP trophy for the first time in the Super Bowl era. Wouldn't you know it? Someone finally agrees with us and our slanted Hurts opinion. Here's some of Gordon's explanation. "(Saquon Barkley) had a season for the ages and finished third in last year's MVP voting. No running back has won MVP since Adrian Peterson in 2012, and it would be next door to preposterous to think Barkley will duplicate his 2024 showing (no RB has ever run 2,000 yards in a season twice). Hence, if the Eagles are to have a player soar to the club's first Super Bowl-era MVP, conventional wisdom says it will be Hurts. In the eyes of many, Hurts had a 'down' year before he piloted Philly to a Super Bowl triumph. He was an MVP runner-up in 2022 and was the Super Bowl LIX MVP. Once you've made that storied trip to Disney World, grabbing some MVP hardware is assuredly in reach." Jalen came close to winning an MVP trophy during the 2022-23 NFL season. Had he not been injured, he might have completed it. Football is a team game, though, and the finale to the Eagles' season didn't go as planned. Despite earning his first Pro Bowl mention and a Second-Team All-Pro nomination, he still had to endure disappointment. He had to settle for a disappointing finish on football's biggest stage. The following season ended in collapse, but Hurts finally got his redemption, courtesy of a blowout win vs. the same Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl 59. Now comes the hard part. The Eagles enter the coming campaign as the hunted. It should be fun, but come on.

Who is the Commanders' player to root for not named Jayden Daniels or Terry McLaurin?

The Washington Commanders were the NFL's biggest surprise of the season. After years of losing and dysfunction, Washington finally turned things around last season, posting a 12-5 record and reaching the NFC Championship. Rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels was the catalyst, quickly becoming the NFL's next star quarterback. As a result, his jersey was a top seller. Daniels should be a fan favorite for years to come, unless you root for the Eagles, Cowboys, Giants, or Bears. Why Chicago? Bears' fans developed a strange obsession with Daniels after he outplayed No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams last season. Oh, and let's not forget, Daniels' Hail Mary to shock the Bears as time expired was so incredible that it won an award at NFL Honors. While Daniels is an obvious fan favorite, as is star wide receiver Terry McLaurin, what other Commanders' player should fans root for in 2025? Well, everyone loves a good comeback story. Right? Defensive tackle Daron Payne isn't coming back from injury, but is coming off two subpar seasons after a breakout season in 2022. This offseason, defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. and head coach Dan Quinn singled out Payne for having a "remarkable" offseason. Tom Blair of named one player from every team to root for in 2025 and made a compelling case for Payne as his choice. Many of us are already rooting for Jayden Daniels, because, duh, and for Terry McLaurin, because he's A) very good and B) paid his dues in the extreme as a mainstay of the franchise's pre-Daniels days. How about giving some love to the other roster stalwart who has Really Gone Through It in Washington? Jonathan Allen's departure this offseason leaves Payne (drafted 13th overall in 2018) as one of the longest-tenured Commanders, someone who's started 84 straight regular-season games for the team -- just 38 of which ended in victory, including 12 last season. The 28-year-old is as deserving as anyone of reveling in Washington's transformation into a legit contender. All the better if Payne, whose pressure rate and sack totals dipped after an 11.5-sack 2022 season, can translate the positive buzz he's been generating to a renewed dominance on the field. Allen probably would have been the choice if the team hadn't parted ways with him over the offseason. However, Blair makes a strong case for Payne. The eighth-year standout is dependable, having started every game in six of his seven NFL seasons to date. That's difficult as an interior defensive lineman. He also proved in 2022 that he could be a dominant force. The Commanders struggled to stop the run last season. Payne is capable of making a significant impact as a run defender and pass rusher. If he can do that, Washington fans will be chanting his name at Northwest Stadium as they hope for another deep playoff run.
