Rams legend Andrew Whitworth is campaigning for the NFL to add an offensive lineman award

Rams legend Andrew Whitworth is campaigning for the NFL to add an offensive lineman award Former Los Angeles Rams left tackle Andrew Whitworth wants some recognition for the big men who block for the most important player on the field. Currently, there's no year-end award for offensive linemen in the NFL. The Most Valuable Player honor typically goes to a quarterback on one of the best teams. Offensive Player of the Year is usually awarded to the top skill player – say, a running back or wide receiver. There's no award dedicated to offensive linemen, but Whitworth is trying to change that. He's pushing for the NFL to add an official honor for the position, recognizing the best lineman each year. 'For an offensive lineman, just because you play in a group, the reality on most plays is that it's one on one,' Whitworth told Sam Farmer of the L.A. Times this week. 'Having an award like this would let an individual stand up there as the best of the best. Every young kid in high school that may be teetering as to whether he wants to be an offensive lineman or not can say, 'Wow, look at Trent Williams. Look at Lane Johnson.' It's an inspiration to want to be great.' Bills lineman Dion Dawkins brought up the idea during his media session ahead of the AFC title game in January, and Whitworth responded on social media. That may have been when the concept was born. According to Farmer, Whitworth has 'shared the idea with Commissioner Roger Goodell and says he has gotten positive feedback.' As Whitworth mentioned in the tweet above, the 'Shield Award' is one potential name for it. We'll see if this ever gets enough traction to become an official post-season award at the NFL Honors show, but it sure is a great concept. With quarterbacks, running backs and wide receivers getting all the attention when it comes to awards, it's time for the big men to get their flowers.

Aidan Hutchinson has already talked with Myles Garrett about a devastating Lions team-up

Myles Garrett is one of the best defensive players of his generation. We could take a reasonable step further and already call the 2023 Defensive Player of the Year one of the finest defenders ever. He also wants off the moribund Cleveland Browns, who, at this point, only threaten to waste the rest of the 29-year-old Garrett's prime if they keep him on their roster. And if Detroit Lions superstar pass-rusher Aidan Hutchinson gets his way, Garrett could soon join the Super Bowl contender and form one of the greatest on-paper defensive duos we've ever seen. In a new interview with The Squeeze podcast, Hutchinson claimed he had chatted with Garrett about a possible Lions team-up at the 2025 NFL Honors show ahead of Super Bowl 59. Oh. Wow. May the football gods help us all if Garrett and Hutchinson end up on the same defense in Detroit. Here's more Hutchinson from The Squeeze: 'We [he and Garrett] were just talking about what could be,' Hutchinson said. 'And, although it's probably unlikely, I would be thrilled to play next to him if it were to happen. Our whole D-Line would be just totally elevated. That would be a scary defensive line. And we get along, too. I've seen him these last few years at different things. He texted me after I got hurt, which, I don't know, it was just a cool thing. Like guys outside of your own team who reach out to you. So I think he's a good dude. If he does, great, but I don't know. We'll see. But that would be awesome.' The latter part of Hutchinson's sentiment is what is especially terrifying about him and Garrett being on the same defense. If it wasn't for a season-ending leg injury last season, there's a very real chance Hutchinson would've been the 2024 DPOY. That would mean the Lions would have two very recent DPOY-caliber pass-rushers on the same roster. (Shivers.) A Garrett trade to the Lions would be a blockbuster deal of tremendous portions for the NFL. And it'd be sweet music to Lions fans' ears while likely dreadful misery for everyone else.

Aidan Hutchinson: Myles Garrett and I have talked about what could be

Browns defensive end Myles Garrett's trade request has sparked a lot of conversations around the league, including one between Garrett and another heralded pass rusher. Lions star Aidan Hutchinson was a guest on The Squeeze podcast and he was asked about any offseason moves that he thinks the Lions should make. Hutchinson said that he and Garrett were both at the NFL Honors show ahead of the Super Bowl and had a chance to chat about forming a 'deadly' combination. 'We were just talking about what could be,' Hutchinson said. 'And, although it's probably unlikely, I would be thrilled to play next to him if it were to happen. Our whole D-Line would be just totally elevated. That would be a scary defensive line. And we get along, too. I've seen him these last few years at different things. If he does, great, but I don't know. We'll see. But that would be awesome.' Garrett said his goal in leaving Cleveland is to land with a contender and the Lions certainly fit the bill on that front, but other teams do as well and the coming weeks should bring more clarity about who is going to make the biggest push for the disgruntled pass rusher.

Bill Belichick and his girlfriend troll the Falcons

For a guy who's supposedly all in with college football, Bill Belichick has spent plenty of time this week hanging around the NFL's marquee event. From an appearance at the NFL Honors show to hitting the party scene to just strolling around New Orleans, the HC of the UNC hasn't been honoring his "No Days Off" mantra. It went next level on Sunday. While out and about with his half-century-younger-than-him girlfriend (not a judgment, just a fact), the happy couple trolled the Falcons. She was wearing a T-shirt that declared the Falcons to be the champions of Super Bowl LI. The message sticks it to the Falcons on multiple levels. That was the game that saw Atlanta squander a 28-3 third-quarter lead to the Patriots. Also, the Falcons are the team that interviewed Belichick but passed on him a year ago, hiring Raheem Morris instead. While it's funny, it's another reason why it won't be easy for Belichick to get another head-coaching job at the pro level. Between Bill and his consigliere "Lombo," enough has been said both publicly and privately to likely burn all bridges back to the 32 teams of the NFL. Which will make it impossible for Belichick to catch Don Shula. And which will make it inevitable for Belichick to be leapfrogged by Andy Reid.
