Jets draft picks represent team's ‘tough' brand: Aaron Glenn

Build the brand. That was the mission of new Jets coach Aaron Glenn in his first NFL draft coaching the team. At the conclusion of Saturday's Day 3, he said he felt like they accomplished it. 'I think the No. 1 thing is we really got guys that fit the brand of who we're going to be,' Glenn said. 'That was something we talked about even starting in free agency to the draft. We're very intentional about guys we want to be a part of this organization. I would say the same thing when it comes to coaches also. Everyone fits. We want to continue that trend because once you do that the core of each person is the same. We might look different. We might act different. But the core of everyone here is the same.' What is that brand? 'Tough, physical, violent, aggressive, a resilient attitude,' Glenn said. 'If we continue to get guys like that, you'll start to see the brand show up on the grass.' Time will tell if the Jets landed players who can live up to Glenn's hopes and turn the Jets from perennial losers to a playoff team. 4 New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn answers questions from reporters on NFL draft night, about their first round selection of Armand Membou, Thursday, April 24, 2025. Noah K. Murray-NY Post The Jets landed seven players in this NFL draft, including four on Saturday. On Day 3, they drafted Georgia wide receiver Arian Smith and Alabama safety Malachi Moore in the fourth round and then two players from Miami in the fifth round, linebacker Francisco Mauigoa and edge rusher Tyler Baron. Those four players joined the picks from the first two days: tackle Armand Membou, tight end Mason Taylor and cornerback Azareye'h Thomas. 4 Jets first-round draft pick Armand Membou speaks to the media in Florham Park, NJ. Bill Kostroun/New York Post Follow The Post's live coverage of the 2025 NFL Draft The players taken on Saturday can provide some depth for the Jets. Glenn cited his experience as the Lions defensive coordinator last season when they had plenty of injuries as an example of needing guys who may be further down the depth chart. 'You need good, quality depth on your team,' Glenn said. 'I went through the injury bug last year. If anything happens to any of our starters, these guys will be able to come in and play for us.' The Jets went offense first on Saturday before then taking defense the rest of the day. Smith ran a 4.36 in the 40-yard dash and can take the top off of defenses. The main criticism of him is that he had 10 drops last year for the Bulldogs, but both Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey said the Jets feel like he is willing and able to improve in that area. 4 Georgia's Arian Smith runs a drill during the school's NFL Pro Day on March, 12, 2025. Moore was a four-year starter for Alabama, first in the 'star' position where he was a nickel corner and then last year as a safety. He was a team captain for the Crimson Tide. He said former Alabama coach Nick Saban advised him to switch positions last year to show his versatility to NFL teams. Follow The Post's live coverage of the 2025 NFL Draft 'A fast, physical, relentless player who's going to compete his tail off for as long as it takes every practice, every game,' Moore said describing himself. 'Somebody who's well prepared and is a fearless competitor.' Glenn said he spoke to Lions safety Brian Branch, who played at Alabama with Moore, before the draft. 'The first thing that came out of his mouth was 'dawg,' ' Glenn said. 'When you hear that, that gets you excited about the player. Then, getting the chance to watch him on tape and see exactly how he operates, he fits us to a 'T.' I'm excited to have that player. He has some versatility.' The Jets then took Mauigoa in the fifth round, who can be an immediate contributor on special teams and can back up Quincy Williams and Jamien Sherwood. Mougey made another move in the fifth round, trading a sixth-round pick (186) and a 2026 fifth-round pick to the Ravens in exchange for a fifth-round pick (176) and a 2026 sixth-round pick. They took Baron at 176. Baron began his career at Tennessee and transferred to Miami. The Jets feel like he can develop as a pass rusher under their coaching.

NFL prospect Desmond Watson seeks to become heaviest player drafted in league history

Defensive lineman Desmond Watson showcased his football skills in front of scouts at the Florida Gators' NFL Pro Day on Thursday. Watson, who is listed at 464 pounds, is aiming to make NFL history. If a franchise selects Watson in next month's draft, he would become the heaviest player drafted in league history. Watson did not speak with the media after he went through some drills in Gainesville on Thursday. But Watson's teammates and coaches spoke on his behalf and praised the NFL Draft prospect for what he was able to accomplish during his time with the Gators. "He moves way better than anybody thought he would at his size," fellow defensive tackle Joey Slackman said. "I don't see why a team wouldn't give him a chance. He's a football player through and through; I would want that guy on my team." Watson attended this year's NFL Scouting Combine, where he bench-pressed 225 pounds 36 times. He also completed the 40-yard dash in 5.93 seconds. Watson's vertical leap reached 25 inches. Watson's size and strength stood out during perhaps the most important day in his professional journey. "Dez, obviously, he's a unicorn," Florida coach Billy Napier said. "You'll go the rest of your career, and you'll never be around a guy that's that stature. And then you get to know Dez. He's extremely intelligent. He's got a great sense of humor. He was a great teammate. "Obviously showed up in good shape today, so he'll get his shot, and I'm hoping he'll make the most of it." Watson was listed at 449 pounds last season, up from 435 pounds as a junior and 415 pounds as a sophomore. He's had to manage his weight since he first stepped foot on campus in 2021, when then-Florida coach Dan Mullen called him "a 385-pound athlete." "He's had numerous nutritionists, numerous position coaches, numerous strength coaches, and I think this past year we probably executed the best we have," Napier said. "And I thought he played his best football of his career. In general, I think he's learned a lot about habit-building, self-discipline. "Ultimately, the guy's frame score would indicate that he's going to be a huge. That number's always going to be pretty big. He's 6-foot-6 and just the density, the bone structure. It's just a big man." Watson never missed a game in his four seasons in Gainesville. His highlights, though, are few and far between. He rag-dolled South Florida running back Brian Battie in 2022 and ripped the ball out of South Carolina running back Jaheim Bell's hands for a forced fumble and a fumble return later that year. Watson probably would have scored had quarterback Spencer Rattler missed an open-field tackle. Watson finished his collegiate career with 63 tackles and 1.5 sacks. Offensive linemen Trent Brown and Daniel Faalele are the heaviest NFL players drafted to date. Both players were 380 pounds. So we all got one goal was to make it to the next level. The more we make each other work, the better our numbers will be,' USD defensive back Dennis Shorter said. 'Just hosting the Pro Day, this is probably the biggest group we've ever had here and being able to put a showing out like that with the area guys and the Yotes squad, it's pretty cool,' USD defensive linemen Blake Holden said.
