Brad Marchand sends ‘toughest' warning to Panthers for Stanley Cup Final

The post Brad Marchand sends 'toughest' warning to Panthers for Stanley Cup Final appeared first on ClutchPoints. It's becoming a regular occurrence at this point, but the Florida Panthers have once again secured their spot in the Stanley Cup Final with a 5-3 win over the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Final on Wednesday evening. Advertisement Matthew Tkachuk, Anton Lundell, and Evan Rodrigues all scored for the Panthers in less than five minutes of time in the second period, erasing what was a 2-0 deficit. While the Hurricanes managed to tie the game at 3-3 in the third period, playoff wizard Carter Verhaeghe restored the lead with his sixth goal of the playoffs, followed by an empty net goal from Sam Bennett in the waning moments of regulation. Speaking of playoff performers, the Panthers acquired one at the 2025 NHL Trade Deadline by trading for Boston Bruins captain Brad Marchand, who played a critical role in Florida's second round victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs. As a former Cup winner himself, he knows that the work isn't finished until the 16th playoff victory is official, via The Athletic. 'We haven't accomplished anything yet,' Marchand said. 'You could just see the guys have been here before, and we're excited that we got through the round, but that's where it stops. The toughest team that we're going to face is coming up next. And if you don't do the job there, you didn't win anything. Advertisement 'So, yeah, we're excited, but it's just like any other round. There's a huge job to do moving forward, and we have to prepare for that now.' Marchand has four goals and 10 assists for the Panthers through 17 postseason games. Panthers' Brad Marchand gives shoutout to Carter Verhaeghe James Guillory-Imagn Images It was Verhaeghe who ended the record-setting season for the Boston Bruins in 2023 with his Game 7 overtime and series-clinching goal, one of his 12 career postseason game-winners. For Marchand, who was on that Bruins team, he recognizes the postseason swagger that Verhaeghe plays with. 'He knows where to go on the ice to make himself dangerous every shift, and it just doesn't seem like pressure gets to him at all or the moment in the game,' Marchand said. 'And he's an incredible shooter. He's a shot-first guy. And when you have that mentality, you put more pucks to the net, the more opportunity you're gonna get. And he just buries his head and shoots it as hard as he can every time he's in that slot.' The Panthers will battle either the Edmonton Oilers or Dallas Stars in the Stanley Cup Final, which are set to begin on either June 4 or June 7. First, Marchand and co. will have some well-deserved rest and relaxation.

3 Takeaways From Penguins 3-2 Overtime Victory Over Golden Knights

A week ago, the Pittsburgh Penguins went through the NHL Trade Deadline, shuffling the deck with several roster adjustments. Hours later, they got shut out by the Vegas Golden Knights 4-0, despite a solid effort. Fast forward five days later, and the Penguins met the same Golden Knights, this time on home ice, where Erik Karlsson became a overtime hero, giving Pittsburgh a 3-2 overtime win on Tuesday night. On top of picking up two points, it was a special night for captain Sidney Crosby who had two goals, giving him 70 points on the season. Meanwhile, Tristan Jarry is 2-0-0 in his return to the crease, so let's get into what happened in last night's game. As mentioned, Crosby had both the Penguins' goals in regulation. In doing so, he's notched a multi-goal game against 30 out of 32 NHL clubs, only missing the Utah Hockey Club and Penguins from his collection. Moreover, Crosby has reached 70 points and is now just ten points shy of 80, which would give him a point-per-game average for the 20th time, breaking the record he currently holds with Wayne Gretzky. Sidney Crosby has now hit 70 points 15 times in his career. 🤯Crazy... — NHL (@NHL) March 12, 2025 Additionally, Crosby has 23 goals and is just seven shy of 30. If he can reach that plateau, it would be his 13th season reaching the milestone which would tie him with Mats Sundin, Brett Hull, Bobby Hull, and Phil Esposito for seventh all-time. Jarry returned to Pittsburgh days ahead of the NHL Trade Deadline. In his two starts, he's faced at least 30 shots in one, emerging victories twice. After the longest time posting a SV% under .900, he's backstopped the Penguins to wins thanks to 64 saves on 67 shots. Tristan Jarry in his return to play: • Stopped 64/67 shots • .955 sv%• 1.49 GAA / 3.79 GSAx• 1 assist • 2 wins Really happy for this guy. Fans have criticized him, he's bounced between the AHL and NHL, but has kept his head high and is focused on improving his game. — ChelPenguins (@ChelPenguins) March 12, 2025 Although the fan base thinks it's too little too late, Jarry's resurgence has been a positive thing for the franchise that hasn't had many things to be excited about down the stretch. Jarry has three years left on his contract and has been tapped as the Penguins de facto number one goalie. Ultimately, that could change in the offseason or next year, but watching him bounceback in this fashion can help the organization reevalaute their future plans. Even though the Penguins were shut out in Las Vegas last week, the game was never out of reach until the final 15 minutes or so, when a 2-0 lead expanded to 4-0. On Tuesday, after going up 2-0, Pittsburgh kept the Golden Knights at bay again, playing competitively at both ends of the ice, which included more hits and blocked shots. When the Penguins are firing on all cylinders, they are capable of playing with anyone in the league, including elite teams like Vegas. Because of their place in the standings, most opponents write off Pittsburgh, but as they showed on Tuesday, there is still a lot of heart in the lineup and they won't just roll over for anyone. Although there is no hope for a playoff spot with only 14 games left, the Penguins can still make a mess of other team's plans and that's the joy of being a spoiler.

Cozens Trade Made To Shake Up Sabres Core Group

The Buffalo Sabres made more than just the expected sell-off of expiring contracts on NHL Trade Deadline day, moving out one of their core group in center Dylan Cozens in a deal with the Ottawa Senators. The four-player deal on Friday culminated a season in which Cozens was connected in trade rumors to several clubs, but GM Kevyn Adams indicated that after another disappointing season, it was time to shake things up. 'My thought process on this was, 'How can we improve our team?' And I think today was a good day." Adams said on Friday. "You evaluate that as you go, and you say 'what's working, what's not working' and you can't be afraid of making changes and big trades. I'd be lying if I didn't say part of the reason that we were open to a big trade (after) how the season has gone. These are hard trades to make; we traded out good players, and we're excited about the return, but these are hard days." The Sabres moved out the 23-year-old center and his $7.1 million salary along with Buffalo native Dennis Gilbert and a 2026 second-round pick for center Josh Norris and defenseman Jacob Bernard-Docker. The 25-year-old Norris was originally a 2017 first-round pick of the San Jose Sharks and was dealt to Ottawa in 2018 in the Erik Karlsson trade. The Oxford, MI native scored a career-high 35 goals in 2021-22 and has the same contract length remaining as Cozens (five years at $7.95 million AAV), but has missed more than 100 regular season games over the last three campaigns with recurrent shoulder issues. "For me, it's a fresh start."Watch Josh Norris' full media availability from morning skate → — Buffalo Sabres (@BuffaloSabres) March 8, 2025 "(Norris) is a player that I have a very high opinion of. I've been watching him very closely for a while. He's a 200-foot center, very talented, responsible on both sides of the puck. He plays in all situations. Both special teams, very good face-off guy," Adams said. "He's just a really good hockey player that is a true center that we think is going to be a guy that can come in and give us a boost and make the guys around him better, and that's why we targeted him." Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman indicated that Norris's name was also out there on the trade market like Cozens and wondered if this was the best deal that the Sabres could make, with the factor of no-trade protection being taken into consideration. Buffalo had to make a bold move with a 14th straight season of missing the playoffs and had to get a center in return for Cozens, but the injury history of Norris makes this trade a risky proposition. Chris Drury Declines To Comment About ‘Private Talks' Revolving Around Chris Kreider Trade

Chris Kreider's name was floating around before the NHL Trade Deadline, but he remains a member of the New York Rangers, at least for now. According to Vince Z. Mercogliano of USA Today, there's a growing possibility of a divorce between Chris Kreider and the New York Rangers. 'My sense is that the Rangers are heading toward an eventual split with their longest-tenured player, Chris Kreider,' Mercogliano wrote. 'He's been on the trade block since Drury included his name in that memo, and while the rumors have quieted down in the months since, two people with knowledge of the situation told part of the USA TODAY Network, that New York remains motivated to move him.' With the Blueshirts still in the playoff push, Rangers president and general manager Chris Drury elected not to make any major trades. As A result, Kreider was ultimately not dealt before the trade deadline on Friday. When asked about trade talks involving Chris Kreider, Drury declined to dive into specifics while acknowledging Kreider's importance to the team. 'I'm certainly not going to get into private talks I have with teams,' Drury said. 'But I'm really excited that Chris is here.' The 33-year-old forward returned to the Rangers' lineup on Saturday afternoon after missing six games with an upper-body injury. Kreider has recorded 17 goals, four assists and 21 points in 49 games while averaging 17:12 minutes. A deal involving Kreider could be revisited during the offseason as he's been the subject of multiple trade rumors throughout the season.

Rangers' Collapse Against Senators Is Costly In Heated Playoff Race

The New York Rangers had two points in the palm of their hands against the Ottawa Senators on Saturday afternoon, but squandered the opportunity after a late-game collapse, leading to a 4-3 overtime loss. This game comes one day after the NHL Trade Deadline as Carson Soucy made his Rangers debut after being traded from the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday. While Soucy is not known for his goal-scoring abilities, he found the back of the net in the first period, starting his Blueshirts tenure on a high note. Soucy gets his first as a #NYR. — New York Rangers (@NYRangers) March 8, 2025 Withstanding the loss, the 30-year-old defenseman was happy with the way he played and fit in with his new team. 'Unfortunately not the win, but I felt better as the game went on,' Soucy said. 'I think some things are going to take a little bit of time to get used to, just system change, but overall first game I felt pretty well.' The Rangers overcame some hiccups and an offensive onslaught from the Senators to take a 3-1 lead with just over 10 minutes in the third period. That's when the Blueshirts completely fell apart. Ottawa began pressing hard and the Rangers simply had no answers to stop the bleeding. All of the Senators' high-quality chances caught up to New York. Igor Shesterkin let up two goals in the final ten minutes of the final frame, granted the Rangers were not doing their superstar goalie any favors by the way they were playing in front of him. The Rangers' two-goal lead evaporated just like that and Brady Tkachuk wasted no time, scoring 33 seconds into overtime to secure the victory. Going into this matchup, the Rangers were tied with the Senators for a playoff spot, so New York's epic downfall late in the contest could be costly for them down the road with the margin for error extremely slim. Now, the Rangers still find themselves outside of the playoffs looking in. 'Frustrating, frustrating having that 3-1 lead in the third and giving that up and giving them the two points,' Mika Zibanejad said. 'It's a quick turnaround and we have to get ready for tomorrow…We needed two points and we didn't get it today.' The Rangers will be back in action on Sunday night against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
