Rockford Christian hires former Boylan standout Bryanna Weiskircher as head volleyball coach
ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF) — Rockford Christian has a new girls head volleyball coach. She's well known in Rockford. She is Bryanna Weiskircher, now Branna was a star player at Boylan a decade ago, where she was a two-time NIC-10 MVP. Weiskircher then shined for one of the top NCAA volleyball programs in the nation Penn graduating from Penn State, Weiskircher-Moore played professionally in Germany. She more recently has served as Club Director and Technical Director at VC United and then as coach of the VC United Elite Program. She has coached boys and girls high school volleyball previously in is taking over a Rockford Christian girls volleyball program that will be loaded this fall led by first-team All-State outside hitter Maddie Anspaugh and honorable mention All-State setter Julia Irvin. Rockford Christian will also return several other key players from a team that went 30-5 last year and won the Big Northern Conference Championship for the first time while also winning at 2A regional championship. Hononegah quarterback Dominic Kelly signs with Ripon College
ROCKTON, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF) — Hononegah's quarterback has found a new home to continue his athletic and academic career. Dominic Kelly has signed with Ripon is an NCAA Division III program that competes in the Midwest helped Hononegah to an 8-2 record last fall, and to a share of the NIC-10 championship. He passed for 499 yards and two touchdowns, but it was his quick feet that gave opposing defenses problems. Kelly rushed for 510 yards and nine Ripon though, he'll play wide receiver. Area girls knock off NIC-10 girls at Rising Stars Classic, Pec's Elaina Rager MV
ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF) — Pecatonica's Elaina Rager scored 22 points leading the Area Girls stars to a 95-82 win over the NIC-10 girls stars Saturday evening at the Rising Stars Classic at Rock Valley fresh off a state championship with Pecatonica, also made some big plays on the defensive end and dished out several assists. Genoa-Kingston's Ally Poegel also had a great game for the area stars. She scored 18 points in the second half, and she tied Rager for game-high scoring honors with 22 Valley's Taylor Davidson also had a strong game for the Area Stars. She scored 18 points, and she dished out several assists. The Area Stars took control in the third quarter when they scored 30 points. Many of them off of steals that led to transition NIC-10 girls were led by Belvidere's Emma Pierson. She scored 17 points. Things are just getting going in the spring sports seasons, and a few stars have already stepped up as we get set for our first Rockford Register Star Athlete of the Week poll with all spring sports names. More area high school sports: Girls soccer: Check out these 13 girls to watch around the Rockford area this soccer season You can go to to vote, or vote on the poll below. We ask that you only vote once per day. To nominate an athlete for the Rockford Register Star's high school Athlete of the Week, send an email to Jay Taft at jtaft@ by 10 a.m. on Monday mornings. Please include stats and any information as to why you think he or she deserves to be nominated. Here are this week's nominees: Benson threw the shot put 16.95 meters (55-feet, 7 1/2-inches) to win the event at the NIC-10 indoor track and field meet at Hononegah on Saturday. That was the 13th best distance in the state this indoor season. Cutler won the 200- and 400-meter runs during the NIC-10 indoor track meet, helping the home team to the boys team title. His 400 time was in the top 10 for the state indoor season. Erdmann, Forreston's shortstop and leadoff hitter, had a big first week, going 3-for-4 with four runs Friday during a 14-12 win over Freeport before going 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs Saturday in a 16-2 win over West Carroll. Hudson, the leadoff hitter and third baseman for Auburn, went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI during Auburn's 11-1 win over Harvest Christian Academy Tuesday. Kramer set a NIC-10 indoor track and field meet record with a 4:19.44 to win the 1,600 run Saturday. He also helped North's 1,600-relay team set a meet record with a 3:32.44 and anchored the winning 3,200 relay team. Larson went 5-for-6 with four runs scored, three stolen bases and three RBIs during Dakota's 22-21 win over Marian Central Catholic on Friday. Dakota rallied for seven runs in the seventh inning. McElroy won both the 60 and the 200 dashes in Saturday's NIC-10 indoor meet, helping Freeport finish fourth in the team standings. Her twin sister Taniah took second in the 60 dash, and they both helped Freeport to a second-place finish in the 4X200 relay. Schlichtmann hit a walk-off single in a 7-6 season-opening win over Amboy last Tuesday. She was 2-for-4. Stender tore into the new season, scoring eight goals as Oregon bolted out to a 3-0-1 start to the soccer season. She had a hat trick Monday against Winnebago, and scored twice during Oregon's 3-0 win over Sterling last Tuesday. She had a goal and an assist in a 2-2 tie Saturday with Harvard. Welch had 16 strikeouts on the mound versus Orangeville last Friday, and she also had a double, two RBIs and two steals at the plate in the 6-5 season-opening loss. Brayden Olson 'Moneyball' three-pointer lifts Hononegah past Auburn in double overtime
ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO/WQRV) — The Hononegah Indians were perhaps the surprise team of the regular season in the NIC-10 going 13-5. They had another surprise Wednesday night. They stunned Auburn 66-65 in double overtime in a semifinal game at the 4A Harlem forward Brayden Olson, the best shooter on Hononegah's team and one of the best in the NIC-10, buried a three-point shot from the left corner with seven seconds to play in the second overtime (there initially were only four seconds on the clock, but the officials put three more up), for the game-winning basket. Olson led all scorers in the game with 21 points. Oba Fasalojo added 16 for Hononegah before fouling out. Carter Freedlund scored 12 was led by Tazheer Henderson with 21 points. Amir Danforth scored 13 and Champ Parker added improves its record to 21-10. The Indians advance to play DeKalb Friday night in the regional championship game.
