Experts from India, Japan unite on human-centric climate resilience
The India-Japan Centre on Climate and Culture, at the Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (IIMK), hosted a workshop on 'Disaster Resilience and Climate Adaptation' on Wednesday. The event brought together eminent academics, practitioners, and policymakers from India and Japan, united by a common goal — building resilient communities in the face of escalating climate risks. A major highlight of the workshop was the launch of a landmark study titled 'Wayanad Landslides 2024: Early Warning System – Changing the Last Mile to the First Mile'. This comprehensive report, a collaborative output of the four partner institutions, is the result of rigorous fieldwork undertaken in Wayanad following the catastrophic landslides on July 30, 2024, which claimed over 400 lives and displaced nearly 7,000 people. The workshop was a collaborative initiative between IIMK, National Institute of Technology - Calicut (NITC), IIT Bombay, and Keio University, Japan, under the aegis of the India-Japan Centre on Climate and Culture at IIMK, a press release said. Beena Philip, Kozhikode Mayor, along with Prof. Debashis Chatterjee, Director, IIMK, and Prof. Prasad Krishna, Director, NITC, inaugurated the workshop. Prof. Rajib Shaw (Keio University), Prof. Sakiko Kanbara (Kobe City College of Nursing), Prof. Anupam Das (IIMK), Prof. Mohammed Firoz (NITC), Prof. Sajin Kumar K.S. (University of Kerala), and Prof. Shyni Anilkumar (NITC) were present.

Company seeks extension for biomining of legacy waste in Brahmapuram
Kochi: The contracting company has requested an extension for completing biomining of waste piled up in Brahmapuram. Bhumi Green Energy Corporation approached Kochi corporation, stating that financial difficulties due to delayed bill payments and impact of heavy rains prevented completion of biomining within the scheduled time. The contract for biomining in Brahmapuram was signed between corporation and Pune-based Bhumi Green Energy on Nov 4, 2023, with a duration of 16 months, which ended in March 2025. Although the company continues biomining, corporation has not extended the contract duration. In this context, the company submitted a letter to corporation requesting an extension. The council meeting to be held on Wednesday will decide on the matter. Initially, cost for processing and removing 7,00,000 tonnes of waste was estimated at Rs 118 crore. However, with the increased waste volume in NIT Calicut (NITC) survey, the cost rose to Rs 142 crore. Mayor M Anilkumar said around 90% of biomining was completed. Corporation states that the 16-month duration was determined based on a survey report estimating 7,00,000 tonnes of legacy waste in Brahmapuram. However, NITC survey found 10.54 cubic metres (8,44,000 tonnes) of waste. Biomining contract was awarded at a rate of Rs 1,690 per tonne.

NIT-C joins HERITAGE Network, signs MoU with European institutes
The National Institute of Technology Calicut (NIT-C) has established a series of high-impact partnerships with premier European institutions by signing MoUs with the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and Technische Universität Berlin (TU Berlin), in addition to its induction into the HERITAGE Network, an Indo-European network of 30 leading technical higher education institutions involved in joint collaboration. A press release issued here on Friday (May 23) said that a team led by NITC Director Prasad Krishna, which visited the European institutes, also held discussions with representatives of the University of Amsterdam and the University of Groningen on fostering academic and research collaborations, as well as prospective student exchange programmes. The institute also explored cooperation in semiconductor packaging research with the Chip Integration Technology Center (CITC) in the Netherlands. These emerging partnerships align closely with several national research and development missions, particularly in advanced electronics and high-tech manufacturing. 'Our partnerships are not just institutional, but generational. They offer the youth of India a chance to access the world, and just as importantly, bring the world to India,' Prof. Krishna said. The election of NITC to the HERITAGE Network during its General Assembly on May 14 at TU Dresden was a significant national achievement. By joining HERITAGE, NITC paves the way for deeper integration into international consortia, thereby enhancing India's academic soft power and creating robust opportunities for Indian students in joint degree programmes, research fellowships, and global internships. The network brings together premier institutions from India and Europe, fostering academic synergy in science, engineering, technology, and design.
