Businessline conclave to focus on MSMEs' role in ‘Make in India' mission

To celebrate the work of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), The Hindu Businessline is hosting its annual MSME conclave. The fourth edition, to be held in two cities, Bengaluru (June 25) and Coimbatore (June 27), will discuss their contribution to the Indian growth story. The first event at Bengaluru, presented in association with NITTE (deemed-to-be university), will feature two power-packed panel discussions — one on defence titled 'MSME: Call to Arms (Supplying to Defence)' and the other on 'Powering Make in India' — and a fireside chat. MSME Day is observed world over annually on June 27 to celebrate these enterprises and recognise their importance, shed light on their contributions, and promote their growth and sustainability. At the Bengaluru conclave, Priyank Kharge, Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, IT and BT of Karnataka, will be the chief guest. Sudha Murthy to receive Justice K.S. Hegde Award 2025

Philanthropist, author, and Rajya Sabha Member, Sudha Murthy, is to be honoured with the Justice K.S. Hegde Charitable Foundation Award 2025 for her contributions to society. The ceremony, organised by the NITTE Education Trust and NITTE (deemed-to-be university), will take place at the NMIT campus in Yelahanka here at 5:30 p.m. on June 11. Ms. Murthy, founder of the Infosys Foundation and Chairperson of the Murthy Trust, is celebrated for her contributions to education, healthcare, and literature. The award, named after former Lok Sabha Speaker Justice K.S. Hegde, honours individuals who exemplify justice, integrity, and public service. Dignitaries including Justice N. Santosh Hegde and Dr. M. Shantharam Shetty will attend. Past recipients include Dr. Manmohan Singh, Medha Patkar, and Dr. Prakash Amte and Dr. Mandakini Amte.

Dakshina Kannada district administration launches UDAL

The Dakshina Kannada district administration, in association with InUnity, launched the Urban and District Advancement through Localising Innovation (UDAL) programme on Saturday to involve students in addressing key issues related to the district. In an official press release, it was stated that UDAL was an initiative mooted by Deputy Commissioner M.P. Mullai Muhilan to position academic institutions as strategic innovation partners in solving challenges in areas such as solid waste management, public healthcare, and urban infrastructure. As part of UDAL, students will use technological concepts to develop solutions which will be implemented immediately at the scale of a district or city, and the problems will be re-examined. Ultimately, the programme will lead to building solutions that can be productized, which is the ultimate goal of creating a start-up ecosystem in the district, the release said. In-charge Deputy Commissioner K. Anandh virtually launched the UDAL website, which will serve as the digital backbone for communication, project documentation, and progress tracking. Principals and institution representatives from NITTE, St. Joseph Engineering College, Canara Engineering College, Yenepoya University, SMVIT, and others institutions, participated.

Mangaluru Researcher Awarded PhD for Groundbreaking Study on Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia

MANGALURU: Dr. Shivani U has been awarded a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) by NITTE (Deemed to be University) for her pioneering research on Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia (CML), a rare form of blood cancer. Her thesis, titled 'A Study to Determine the Clinical, Haematological, Cytogenetic and Molecular Profile in Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML) Patients,' was successfully defended on May 8, 2025. Dr. Shivani's study offers a comprehensive assessment of CML, integrating clinical data with haematological, cytogenetic, and molecular analyses—an approach that could contribute to improved diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of the disease. Her doctoral research was conducted under the guidance of Dr. D. Prashanth Shetty, former Professor and Coordinator of the KSHEMA Centre for Genetic Services at K.S. Hegde Medical Academy. Dr. Shetty currently serves as a Professor at the Srinivas Institute of Allied Health Sciences under Srinivas University. The doctoral committee included Dr. Reshma A. Shetty (Assistant Professor, KSHEMA Centre for Genetic Services), Dr. Vijith Shetty (Professor, Department of Oncology), and Dr. Suchetha Kumari N. (Professor, Department of Biochemistry, KSHEMA), who evaluated and supported the research work. A native of Mangaluru, Dr. Shivani is an alumna of local institutions and is known for her academic diligence. She is the daughter of Bhanukala Uday, student section head at KMC Mangalore, and Uday Kumar, formerly on staff at KMC Attavar.
