Why K-pop Idols Are Avoiding ‘V' Sign Ahead Of South Korea's Presidential Election

Last Updated: With South Korea's presidential election scheduled for June 3, celebrities are extremely cautious about hand gestures to avoid controversy. As the South Korean presidential election nears, K-pop idols have become increasingly cautious about their hand gestures and poses amid rising controversy over political symbolism. The 21st presidential election in the country is set to take place on June 3 to replace Yoon Suk Yeol. Yeol was removed from his office for placing the country under martial law for six hours in December last year. The incident had led to widespread protests and criticism. Since then, South Korea has seen three acting presidents. Now, the country is preparing for an election to choose a new leader. With this, K-pop idols have started avoiding certain gestures and poses while making public appearances. On May 27, NMIXX's Bae flashed a 'V' sign during a YouTube livestream. She immediately realised and said, 'No! Don't do the V!" and held her head in distress. Sullyoon tried to smooth things over with a similar pose. As part of a challenge ending pose, she hesitantly made a 'V' sign. Worried about its possible political interpretations, she then quickly showed all numbers from one to five with her fingers instead, as reported by AllKpop. The precautions come as the sign is linked to the conservative People Power Party in South Korea. The gesture can be seen as a symbol of support, since the party is represented by 'number 2" on the ballot and the colour red. As a result, celebrities have been extra cautious, fearing that their gestures could be misinterpreted as a political endorsement. The boy group, Tomorrow X Together (TXT), was also captured making a neutral pose in a photo shared on their social media. The five-membered group, which is typically seen making the 'V' gesture as a popular greeting among many K-pop groups, clenched their fists as they posed for the camera. Similarly, during a group photo on their May 24 YouTube live broadcast, members of the virtual group PLAVE were also seen carefully folding their fingers while posing. ZEROBASEONE's Kim Tae Rae hurriedly edited a picture after he posed with a 'V' sign, and even RIIZE's Shotaro had to quickly change his pose upon realising that he made the same sign. The South Korean presidential elections are typically held in the winter. However, due to the incident linked to Yeol, the schedule has been moved up, leading to an early election this year. (Video) 'Not Falling For That': NMIXX's Lily Declines Fan's Request To Sing Off-Pitch During Livestream

K-pop idol livestreams are either the most relaxing experience or absolute chaos – there's no in-between. A lot can go wrong when you're live on air, and most of the time, it's too late for damage control, even with a follow-up apology. Thankfully, incidents like these are rare, and livestreams are generally a fun way for idols to connect with fans, taking silly requests, answering questions, and sharing personal stories. However, one singer was noticeably cautious when a viewer asked her to do something on camera, a request she politely declined. So, what exactly was it? Let's find out: Yesterday (Thursday, 24th April), NMIXX (엔믹스) 's Lily (릴리) held a solo livestream for fans. During the broadcast, one viewer asked the singer to deliberately sing off-pitch, a request she firmly declined. 'Absolutely not. I hate it when I sing off-pitch, so why would I do that on purpose? Look, it's all fun and games until someone takes that part [of the livestream] and says, 'Oh, you think she's a good singer?' I'm not going to fall for that!' said the idol. She went on to remind viewers that the internet can be a cruel place, particularly when it comes to criticism and cyberbullying. However, she clarified that while she doesn't care what others think of her personally, she takes her singing very seriously. 'I know how the internet works. Sure, I can joke around and sing off-pitch, but someone out there will take it seriously. It's not that I care what people say — it's more that I don't want that for myself, because I take my singing seriously,' she said. The moment quickly went viral on social media, with fans praising Lily for her quick thinking. Many noted that the idol is 'chronically online', suggesting she's well aware of what people post about fellow idols. Others commented that she was wise to decline the request, which some suspected was an attempt to set her up for criticism. Fans also hoped that other K-pop idols would stand up for themselves and call out viewers' problematic behaviour during livestreams. It's hard to disagree with Lily that the internet can be a vicious place. It's always wise to proceed with caution before posting anything, as even the smallest moment can lead to serious consequences, whether or not you're at fault. Do you agree? 'IU is a commie.' List of politicians, celebrities spreads online with NewJeans, Han Kang

A handwritten list by an anonymous individual accusing prominent political figures and artist groups of being "China-friendly," "pro-North Korea followers," "communist party" or "commies" is spreading online. Rep. Jung Chung-rae, a four-term lawmaker of the main opposition liberal Democratic Party of Korea, shared a post on Facebook on Monday that his name had been included on the handwritten list totaling 107 names, without clarifying the origin of the list. Jung, who had shared the post of former lawmaker Choe Kang-wook, said he was listed just after liberal former President Moon Jae-in and Democratic Party Chair Rep. Lee Jae-myung, sarcastically saying he was "honored." Also on the list were K-pop celebrities, such as singer-songwriter IU, as well as K-pop groups NewJeans, who now call themselves NJZ, and NMIXX. IU and NJZ made headlines when they prepaid for food for fans who attended protests in December calling for President Yoon Suk Yeol's impeachment over the Dec. 3 martial law crisis. Kyujin of NMIXX also told her fans to keep warm at protests supporting Yoon's impeachment through a messaging service with fans. Globally acclaimed cultural figures, such as Nobel Prize for Literature winner Han Kang, Oscar-winning director Bong Joon-ho of "Parasite," "Squid Game" director Hwang Dong-hyuk and comedian and TV show host Yoo Jae-suk were also on the list. Among them, Bong led the film industry's statement calling for Yoon's impeachment in December, while Hwang said just before the release of "Squid Game" season 2 that "someone must bear the responsibility by being impeached or by resigning" for intigating the martial law crisis.
