$100K grant opportunity for Lewis County's rich history
LEWIS COUNTY, N.Y. (WWTI) – The Northern New York Community Foundation has announced a funding opportunity of up to $100,000 for historic preservation and restoration projects in Lewis County. Historic preservation preserves history, fosters community identity and enhances economic and environmental benefits. We are excited to offer this type of funding as a way to build an even stronger sense of community,' said Rande S. Richardson, Community Foundation executive director. 'We are grateful for our Lewis County donors over the years who have entrusted us to support these types of initiatives.' NNYCF says that churches and 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations that are fully situated in Lewis County and intend to engage in historic preservation or restoration are eligible applicants. The preservation or restoration of locations with valid historical relevance and important historical community landmarks should be the main goals of projects. Cemeteries are not eligible to be considered for this program. According to NNYCF, applicants should also adhere to the following criteria: Properties slated for historic preservation or restoration must be wholly owned by the applicant organization Funding is available for projects that specifically address the exterior of existing structures or elements Funding priority will be for properties easily accessed and enjoyed by the public No grants will be awarded for additions or modifications that substantially alter the historic nature and character of the property A total of up to $100,000 is available for the application period. Complete grant proposals must be submitted by 5 p.m. on Friday, July 18, 2025, through the Foundation's online grant portal. The Foundation will support several meaningful grants within the total funding available. Successful applicants may receive full or partial funding, considering priorities and the number of worthy projects. Applicants should contact the Community Foundation to discuss their funding requests before submitting. Canstruction winning teams donate canned goods to North Country food banks
WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWTI) – The Northern New York Community Foundation's LEAD Council has announced the winners of its third 'Canstruction for Northern New York' contest to assist in reducing food insecurity in the North Country. Additionally, the winning teams will share a $1,500 grant award to present to two different school-based backpack programs that participants selected. With almost 600 votes cast, Carthage Middle School's Builders Club & Student Government entry is the 'People's Choice Award' winner for its sculpture titled 'Let Your Love Flow.' The class also won the 'Top Collection Award' with 3,219 canned goods and other nonperishable items collected, according to NNYCF. Alicia Anderson, the classroom teaching assistant at Carthage Middle School, spearheaded the initiative to encourage student involvement in the competition from every building in the district. According to Anderson, her pupils accepted the challenge and organized a contest to encourage classrooms across the school to assist in gathering food and hygiene supplies for their sculpture. Our club made posters to get everyone involved and we had a competition to get students excited. Almost every classroom participated, and our top three classes each collected more than 300 cans,' eighth-grade club members Finn Anderson, Kyle Schardt, and Catherine Wilay said. 'It feels good to know that we are able to help the community and that our whole school was involved.' South Jefferson's Junior National Honor Society is the winner of the 'Best Design Award' for its 'canstruction' of 'Walk a Mile in Someone Else's Shoes.' The sculpture of a giant Converse sneaker challenges observers to put themselves in the shoes of our neighbors in need, said the Community Foundation. South Jefferson Instructional Coach and Junior National Honor Society co-advisor Leslie Robare said it was 'truly inspiring' to watch 'students take full ownership of the Canstruction project.' NYS schools experience second consecutive day of state testing disruptions 'They tapped into their creativity, collaborated, and designed something incredible,' Robare said. 'None of it would have been possible without the generosity of our community, which always comes together to support our can drive and our students.' Each of the nine participating teams will donate all items used to build their sculptures to a local food pantry or backpack program. Each award winner will receive a $500 grant for participants to distribute to a nonprofit of their choice. Rock Charitable Fund awards $148,460 to 11 NNY nonprofits Carthage Middle School's Builders Club & Student Government students designated the district's 'Comet Closet' backpack program to receive their collected items. Students also selected the backpack program as the recipient of two $500 grant awards they won for the 'People's Choice Award' and the 'Top Collection Award.' South Jefferson's Junior National Honor Society students designated the district's Backpack Program, which supports students and families on the weekends, to receive the hundreds of food items they collected as well as the $500 grant for the 'Best Design Award.' Other teams participating were: Clarkson University's American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Chapter with 'Golden Knight;' Exceptional Kids and Family Therapies, Evans Mills, with 'Month of the Military Child;' North Country Children's Museum, Potsdam, with 'Angry Betty;' South Jefferson Central School's JCC Edge Class with 'Together we CAN stop childhood hunger;' Thousand Islands Central School's National Honor Society with 'Thousand Islands Pride;' Watertown City School District's Sherman Elementary with 'Sherman Sharks;' and Watertown City School District's Wiley Intermediate School with 'Watertown Can-Dium!' NNYCF's Sawyer Community Fund helps improve safety for Western Town Library patrons 'Canstruction for Northern New York' encouraged tri-county students to team up and build a themed structure made of donated canned food and other nonperishable food items or hygiene products to support a local food pantry or backpack program of their choice and reduce food insecurity across the region. Participating students had a chance to support the needs of tri-county residents while learning values of community philanthropy and building school spirit. The project helped raise awareness about hunger and food insecurity in local communities and empowered students to collaborate and inspire their school and community. NNYCF grants available for nonprofit organizations
WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWTI) – The Northern New York Community Foundation has announced a number of funding opportunities available to nonprofit organizations serving at least seven communities in Jefferson and Lewis counties. $5K Up for Grabs: NNYCF encourages participation in Scholarship Programs The deadline to apply for each of the following grant opportunities is Friday, April 18: Kenneth V. and Jeannette Remp Sawyer Community Fund — Up to $60,000 available. Support programs, projects, and initiatives that enhance the quality of life for residents of all ages in the Boonville, Constableville, and Westernville communities. Orchestral Fund — Up to $25,000 available. Support for live orchestral performances in the Watertown area. Applicants are required to have at least 20 performers in the group with an instrumental component. George R. Davis Fund for Lowville — Up to $20,000 available. Support programs, projects, and initiatives that impact the quality of life for residents in the Village and Town of Lowville. Carolyn Whitney Fund — Up to $5,000 available. Support for tree planting projects in the City of Watertown. The Lighthouse Fund — Up to $2,500 available. Support nonprofit organizations providing services to disadvantaged and vulnerable populations in the Cape Vincent and Clayton communities. The CAR-FRESHNER Corporation Charitable Fund is also accepting applications for second-quarter grant support. The deadline to apply is Friday, April 25. Up to $100,000 in funding is available. The CAR-FRESHNER Corporation Charitable Fund is designed to support community programs, projects, and initiatives with specific focus areas, which will vary from time to time. This year, applications must focus on educational initiatives, including but not limited to libraries, childcare and preschool programs, career training, vocational and technical education, and similar projects that enhance educational opportunities within Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence Counties. Eligible nonprofit organizations may submit one application per year. Local arts organizations unite to establish David Simmons Scholarship Fund Applications for each grant opportunity are available via the Community Foundation's Grant Lifecycle Manager (GLM) system, which may be found on NNYCF's website. Nonprofits can use the web portal to set up an organization's user profile and apply for active grant opportunities. The Foundation advises nonprofits to create a single user account for their organization. The portal has an easy-to-use interface that walks users through the application process step by step. To understand more about the procedure, visit the Foundation's website and log in to the portal. To be eligible for Community Foundation funds, nonprofits must be IRS-classified as 501(c)(3) organizations. Other entities may be eligible depending on the request. Other open grant options include the Community Foundation's general grant program and the Jefferson Economic Development Fund. Applications for each are being taken on a rolling basis. $5K Up for Grabs: NNYCF encourages participation in Scholarship Programs
NORTH COUNTRY, N.Y. (WWTI) – The Northern New York Community Foundation has announced a new challenge to inspire greater participation in its scholarship program from the Class of 2025 and give schools a chance to win a share of up to $5,000 in grant support. The scholarship challenge is open to all schools in Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence counties. The Community Foundation's scholarship program supports graduating seniors pursuing further education — whether at an accredited college, university, technical, or trade school. Apply Now: NNYCF Offers Scholarships for Fall 2025 'With an increasing number and variety of opportunities available to support students, we hope this incentive will help build the widest pool of applicants across our region,' said Rande S. Richardson, Community Foundation executive director. 'If this challenge is successful, it will be a win for all as students will benefit directly, their schools may receive additional funding, and our donors will have the best opportunity provide help in the most meaningful ways.' There are two ways schools have a chance to win grant support: $1,000 grant to a school in each of the three counties it serves. To be eligible, schools must achieve at least 25% participation from their senior class in submitting scholarship applications by Friday, Feb. 21, 2025. The top nine schools — three from each county — with the highest overall participation rates by Saturday, March 15, application deadline, will be eligible to win a $2,000 grant. Calling Theresa Nonprofits: Apply for $3K in funding NNYCF says schools selected for grant awards will be chosen at random. Awards may be used to support a schoolwide initiative or project chosen by the senior class officers. Throughout the challenge, NNYCF will report progress at the end of each week on its Facebook and Instagram channels. Community Spirit Youth Giving Challenge Awards $10,000 for 10 NNY nonprofits Last year, 19% of all high school seniors in Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence counties applied for NNYCF scholarship support: 26% in Jefferson County; 22% in Lewis County; and 10% of St. Lawrence County seniors completed a scholarship application.
