Gold Coast Titans coach Des Hasler on final warning after latest outburst to NRL officials

Gold Coast coach Des Hasler is on his final warning for 'direct and targeted criticism' towards the NRL referees. The league released a statement on Thursday following Hasler's explosive comments towards officials over the weekend. Hasler claimed bunker official Kasey Badger got a call wrong to deny the Titans a try, which resulted in a 12-point swing during the 26-16 loss to Melbourne Storm. Storm players Trent Leorio and Shawn Blore were caught up on the ground at the ruck and Titans dummy half Sam Verrills picked up the ball and dived over the line. But after a Melbourne challenge, Badger ruled Verrills had made contact with teammate Tino Fa'asuamaleaui, who played the ball, which impeded Ryan Papenhuyzen in defence and was declared a no-try. While the Titans retained the ball due to the Storm ruck infringement and attacked the line, Melbourne's Grant Anderson intercepted a pass and raced 90 metres to score. 'Kasey got it wrong, again,' Hasler said at the post-match press conference, which he cut short after two questions. 'There's an email from the NRL about players lying in the ruck; that's fine, let them lie in the ruck, but you shouldn't lose the advantage. 'They were lying all over the ground and six again, penalty, I don't know whether it was called, and young Vez (Verrills) picks up the ball and dives through, doesn't touch anyone, Papenhuyzen wasn't obstructed. 'That was the word-for-word what the NRL sent out, so I'll be interested to see what their explanation was.' The NRL didn't take too kindly to the remarks. 'The NRL has issued Gold Coast Titans coach Des Hasler with a final warning for direct and targeted criticism of NRL Match Officials,' the league said in a statement. 'The final warning relates to comments made by Hasler following Round 13 of the NRL Premiership, as well as previous public statements regarding officiating.' 'Hasler has been reminded of his obligations under the NRL Rules and Code of Conduct as well as his general responsibility as a sporting leader. 'Negative public remarks about match officials significantly hinder the recruitment and retention of match officials at the community and pathways tiers of the game.' Cowboys coach Todd Payten was hit with a similar warning for his comments last month. Gold Coast are in last place after losing seven of their past eight, including last week's loss to Melbourne where they had at times looked a live chance of winning.

Knights urged to make tough $2m call after embarrassing defeat to Gold Coast Titans

The Knights turned in one of their worst performances of the last decade as they conceded 24 straight points to lose 24-20 to the languishing Titans on Friday night. Having not bagged a win since besting the Roosters 30-12 in Round 4, underfire Des Hasler got a much-needed win. But after the full-time whistle, it was his coaching compatriot who found himself under immense pressure as Knights fans called for Adam O'Brien to be sacked immediately. Despite the Knights playing finals footy in four of the past five seasons, there is a growing sense that O'Brien is not the man to bring an elusive premiership to Newcastle. And while Newcastle's attacking struggles have been well highlighted in the early season, the overall lack of structure and creativity from a team full of attacking juggernauts is deeply troubling, and it has many feeling the Knights need to bite the bullet and sack him at whatever cost. However, the problem is O'Brien's contract runs until the end of 2027 and written into his deal is that if he is axed he will get a full payout of around $2 million. But after a complete horror show against the Titans and a sense that the Knights are continuing to trend in the wrong direction, fans are calling for O'Brien's head. 'Knights getting booed off their own field after pissing away a lead & conceding 18 straight points to lose. Not sure how Adam O'Brien survives this. Their attacking structure is non-existent. Their players look out of belief,' one fan wrote on X. 'Adam O'Brien surely gets the sack this week,' another said. 'Adam O'Brien must be walking one hell of a tightrope,' a third added. O'Brien touched on the disappearance of the lead after the game, and the under-fire coach didn't miss in his analysis. 'It's not a good habit to get in, getting ahead of ourselves after one game, and I'm not saying it's everybody that did that, but when we get into a good lead, and then fell into a hole at the backend of the first-half and beginning of the second,' O'Brien said in his post-match press conference. 'It's embarrassing really.' It's the first time this season the Knights have scored 20+ points and lost, and there's a key component to the compounding losses according to O'Brien. 'I was never concerned when we had the forwards. We had them for the Dolphins game, we scored 26, next game we had them was the Souths game, we scored 30. 'The errors are coming from out wide. The outside backs are making all the errors and it's costing our middle a little bit.' The Knights are now 3-6 in 2025.

Western Australia to join nation's top tier rugby competition

The new Western Australia NRL team will compete in the Premiership in 2027 or 2028 [Getty Images] Australia has announced a National Rugby League (NRL) team will be established in Western Australia (WA) for the first time. The WA state government will invest A$65m (£31m; $42m) to set up and support the new club over the next seven years. WA premier Roger Cook said the announcement is "great news for sports fans" in the state, which is has traditionally been Aussie Rules country, and will also benefit it's economy. ADVERTISEMENT Advertisement The news comes as the NRL has been trying to broaden its appeal - both in Australia and globally - by expanding to new markets, including hosting exhibition matches in the US and inviting Papua New Guinea (PNG) to join the league full-time. The new team, the name and colours of which are yet to be announced, is expected to compete in the NRL Premiership competition in 2027 or 2028. Cook said all funding from the state government will be spent in WA and the club will be chaired by a local Western Australian. "Not only will this be great news for sports fans, it will be great news for our economy and great news for jobs," he said in a social media video. ADVERTISEMENT Advertisement Negotiations between the WA state government and the Australian Rugby League Commission had persisted for months before Wednesday's announcement. It is estimated the new club will deliver A$28m annually in economic value once it begins competing, according to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. The NRL has been trying to broaden its reach and attract new audiences for years. Last year, the Australian government, in partnership with the league, announced it will invest A$600m over ten years to set up a new team in PNG - a deal that required the Pacific nation to shun security ties with China. Hynes, Kennedy stand up in Sharks' spine-tingling win

Cronulla's under-fire spine has stood up to help deliver the Sharks a crucial 24-18 win over Manly in Perth. Fresh off the back of two straight losses, Cronulla withstood waves of early ball against them before breaking the Sea Eagles' backs before halftime. The Sharks led 14-6 and 24-12 in the second half, before two long-range intercepts let Manly back into the game on both occasions. Watch all the highlights as the Sharks take on Manly in Round 6 of the NRL Premiership!#NRLSharksManly — NRL (@NRL) April 12, 2025 But the Sharks were ultimately able to hold on, leaving both sides with a 3-3 record after six rounds. Fullback Will Kennedy was superb in the win, Braydon Trindall set up two tries, while Nicho Hynes and Blayke Brailey both pulled the right rein at key moments. Their performances came after Cronulla failed to ask enough questions in last week's loss to Canberra, and as the Sea Eagles missed their main threat Tom Trbojevic. Manly could desperately have done with their star fullback's spark at several stages in Saturday's match, after spending the early stages camped in Cronulla's half. But while they were often too sideways and ran themselves into corners, Cronulla produced in key moments. After a scoreless opening 35 minutes, Sam Stonestreet did well to break the game's duck when he hung onto a Trindall cut-out pass and dotted down. Trindall and Stonestreet then combined to make it a double blow on halftime, when the winger dove on a grubber kick from his five-eighth. The second half was all Kennedy. He was denied a 90-metre effort from a kick return when Stonestreet was ruled to have provided an escort run on the chase. But the fullback wouldn't be denied later on, benefiting from a Jesse Ramien offload when he stepped, dummied and beat five defenders to the line. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Cronulla Sharks (@cronullasharks) Kennedy had earlier produced a key moment in defence, denying a Manly try when he stuck out his foot to trap a grubber kick after a Sea Eagles break. And when Manly got back to 14-12 courtesy of a 90-metre Luke Brooks intercept, it was Hynes and Trindall who slowed down the comeback. Linking up on the left edge, Hynes produced a double-pump pass to catch out the defence and give Ronaldo Mulitalo the space to send Mawene Hiroti over. Brailey also had a smart play late, putting Tom Hazelton over for a try with a short ball from dummy-half when Manly expected a field goal attempt at 18-12. That try ultimately proved crucial, ensuring the Sharks had enough of a bubble when a late Tommy Talau intercept led to Daly Cherry-Evans' 79th-minute try. Manly have now lost two in a row without Trbojevic, taking their record without the fullback to 16 wins in 49 games since the start of 2021. The No.1 won't return from a knee injury against St George Illawarra on Thursday night, but is some chance of coming back the week after against Penrith.
