No suspects have been arrested in connection to the Aug. 1 stabbing, which occurred in the 800 block of Ewen Avenue around midnight, the New Westminster Police Department told CTV News on Wednesday. In a news release, the NWPD said the initial 911 call was about a fight in the area. When officers arrived, they found a man who 'appeared to be the victim of a stabbing,' police said. Responding officers provided first aid, 'including efforts to control bleeding,' and the victim was taken to hospital by B.C. Emergency Health Services, according to the NWPD. Man assaulted during Facebook Marketplace sale, New Westminster police say
Police in New Westminster say they're searching for a suspect who allegedly assaulted and stole from a Facebook Marketplace seller. The victim reported he met a person at Columbia Square to sell an iPhone Monday afternoon, according to the department. 'The victim shared that he gave chase to a man who handed him counterfeit bills,' the NWPD wrote in a news release Tuesday. 'The suspect then pepper sprayed the victim before fleeing the scene in a white Tesla with an unknown driver.' Police are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or can identify the suspect to come forward, describing him as an approximately 18- to 20-year-old white man with short brown hair who weighs about 120 pounds and is 5'5' tall. 'Theft and assault are serious matters and our officers are following up on several investigative avenues to identify the suspect,' said Sgt. Andrew Leaver, in the release. 'We're encouraging anyone who has CCTV in the area to please review it and reach out to officers if they have footage of this incident.' The NWPD also gave a reminder that selling items to strangers via online platforms like Facebook Marketplace can carry risks, and said anyone can use the department's lobby to make a transaction.

New Westminster man pleads guilty to 7 charges in intimate partner violence investigation
The courthouse in New Westminster is shown. (CTV News) A New Westminster man has pleaded guilty to seven charges after a 'complex and emotionally challenging' investigation into intimate partner violence, local police say. Edward Soviak entered the guilty pleas on June 4, the New Westminster Police Department said in a news release Tuesday. Online court records show he was charged with 16 offences that were alleged to have occurred between Sept. 6 and Oct. 30 in New Westminster. The seven to which he pleaded guilty were: Two counts of assault One count of unlawful confinement One count of breaching a release order One count of breaching a no-contact order One count of obstruction of justice And one count of uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm The charges stemmed from an investigation that began 'after police responded to several reports involving a pattern of escalating violence,' the NWPD said in its release. The seven guilty pleas related to 'three separate incidents,' according to police. 'This was a complex and emotionally challenging investigation,' said Sgt. Andrew Leaver, in the release. 'I want to commend the incredible work of our Specialized Investigation Unit and thank our partners at Family Services of Greater Vancouver and our Victim Assistance Unit. Their efforts played a vital role in supporting the victim and helping ensure these offenses were brought before the court.' Court records indicate Soviak was born in 1989, which would make him 35 or 36 years old. He remains in custody and his next court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 6 in New Westminster.
