No evidence of police assaulting mother of R.G. Kar victim, says Kolkata Police official

Joint Commissioner of Police, Kolkata, Meeraj Khalid, said on Tuesday (August 12, 2025) that the police did not assault the mother of the R.G. Kar rape victim during protests on August 9, as she alleged after the 'Nabanna Abhijaan' rally. 'It is very unfortunate that she was injured. However, we have reviewed all the video footage we have from that day. In no footage can we see that the police slammed her to the ground and assaulted her. We haven't found any such footage so far, but if anyone has any visuals of the same, they are free to share them with us,' Mr. Khalid said. On August 9, the parents of the doctor who was raped and killed at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital organised a protest march to the State Secretariat (Nabanna) to mark the passage of a year since the gruesome crime and demand justice for their daughter. During the rally, the victim's mother sustained injuries on her forehead, which, she alleged, were inflicted by the police. 'Slammed to the ground' 'Kolkata Police attacked me because I demanded justice for my daughter. They hit me on my forehead, and they broke my bangles. Police slammed me to the ground and assaulted me,' the victim's mother had said on August 9. The day after, on Sunday, Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Kumar Verma said that the injury to the victim's mother was 'regrettable and should not have happened.' He had further said that the allegations of police brutality against her would be investigated. The victim's mother is currently admitted to a private medical facility in Kolkata for treatment. 'Protestors who were part of the rally on August 9 declined to follow directions given by the police and instead pursued a route through Park Street. Consequently, our personnel tried to stop them at Park Street. But they did not listen and instead attacked police personnel. Five personnel were severely injured,' Mr. Khalid said while addressing questions on the clashes between police and protestors at various locations in the city on August 9. Meanwhile, the father of the victim wrote to Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Kumar Verma on Tuesday, alleging 'harassment' by police officials across multiple police stations while trying to lodge a complaint concerning the alleged assault. Police 'harassment' 'We tried to file a police complaint at Shakespeare Sarani Police Station but were told to file it in the Park Street Police Station instead. Then, police officials again redirected us to New Market Police Station, but there they asked us to lodge it at Shakespeare Sarani PS. At this point, we are being made to believe that they do not want to register our complaint at all and are making us run from pillar to post,' the victim's father told The Hindu on Tuesday. In the email written to the Kolkata Police Commissioner, the victim's father alleged that they feel 'extremely harassed' by the confusing directions being given by Kolkata Police officials in filing the police complaint and consequent lodging of a First Information Report (FIR). 'It is extremely unfortunate to see this kind of harassment by your police stations. Kindly let us know if you are declining to register the FIR,' the email read. However, the Police Commissioner wrote back to the victim's father on Tuesday afternoon, saying that their police complaint has been received at New Market Police Station and has been 'diarised vide GDE number- 1350, dated 12.08.2025, for taking necessary action as per law.'
