Heatwave: Here are the precautions to take
BEIRUT — A few days after the start of the heat wave currently affecting Lebanon, the Civil Defense advised residents on Monday to take several measures to protect themselves in the next few days and others to avoid provoking wildfires, especially as temperatures are expected to increase further. According to weather forecasts, temperatures will rise above seasonal averages by around 10 degrees in inland areas, with high humidity in coastal areas as well as the possibility of localized rainfall in some regions. The heatwave is expected to continue throughout the week and will gradually subside starting on Friday. The Civil Defense announced that, under the direction of the Interior Minister Ahmad al-Hajjar, it has launched a field emergency plan to cope with the extreme heat wave, and warned citizens of the dangers associated with these weather conditions, whether as a result of extreme heat or sudden changes in the weather. According to the statement, the Civil Defense Director General, Brigadier General Nabil Farah, gave instructions to the Directorate's units and centers spread across Lebanese territory to "enhance readiness and preparedness for immediate intervention in the event of any emergency caused by the heat wave or heavy rains that could lead to flash floods and landslides, especially in mountainous and border areas.' 'Avoid any activity that could lead to a fire' The heatwave measures advised by the Civil Defense include drinking plenty of water and fluids, avoiding direct exposure to sunlight, especially between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. and using sunscreen on exposed skin. Moreover, the statement warns against leaving children, elderly people or pets in cars or enclosed spaces without ventilation. Regarding fire prevention, the Civil Defense calls for refraining completely from lighting fires in dry grass when cleaning agricultural land and warns against throwing cigarette butts from cars or in wooded areas or using fireworks near forests or dry grass. In this regard, Environment Minister Tamara al-Zein reminded residents on Tuesday of the "need to exercise caution, adhere to preventive guidelines, and avoid any activity that could lead to a fire.' Since the heatwave took hold, amid a particularly dry summer following a winter low on rain, Civil Defense firefighting teams have been battling fires across the country, from Akkar in the North, to the Bekaa in the East, to Nabatieh and Sour in the South. On Monday, at least three fires broke out in southern Lebanon, one of which consumed large swathes of forested area and grasslands on the outskirts of the town of Moammarieh, southeast of Saida. Finally, regarding sudden rains, the measures mentioned by the Civil Defense include exercising caution when traveling on roads during heavy rains due to the possibility of flash floods or rock slides and staying away from riverbanks and flood channels. On Monday, rain was reported in northern Bekaa and the Akkar district in northern Lebanon. The statement finally emphasized 'the importance of immediately calling 125 to report any emergency, or sending photos and geographical location via WhatsApp to 70192693 to facilitate rapid intervention and provide immediate assistance.'

Civil Defense analyzes grain at Beirut Port silos amid ongoing safety concerns
Lebanon's Civil Defense announced it has conducted a comprehensive survey and analysis of grain stored at the Beirut Port silos, following directives from Interior Minister Ahmad Hajjar and under the supervision of Acting Director General Brigadier General Nabil Farah. The mission was carried out by the Civil Defense's Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear Defense (CBRN) unit and its technical team, upon request from the National Council for Scientific Research. The operation comes amid persistent concerns over the safety of the grain silos, which were damaged in the 2020 Beirut Port explosion and have since become a symbol of the disaster. Samples were collected from three separate sites within the wheat silos and sent to specialized laboratories for testing and analysis. The Civil Defense emphasized its continued commitment to national and humanitarian responsibilities, reaffirming efforts to ensure public safety and prevent any potential health or environmental risks stemming from the deteriorating grain storage conditions.

Civil Defense: Tremendous efforts to control Hermel fire which caused 3 dead, 3 injured in critical condition
NNA - The Civil Defense General Directorate's Media and Public Relations Department announced in a statement that, "With the close follow-up of His Excellency the Minister of Interior and Municipalities, Ahmad Al-Hajjar, and under the supervision of the Acting Director General of Civil Defense, Brigadier General Nabil Farah, firefighting operations began at 11:41 a.m. on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, after the General Directorate of Civil Defense's operations room received a call reporting a fire inside a fuel distribution station in Hermel." The statement added that firefighting teams from the General Directorate of Civil Defense immediately rushed to the site of the fire and have been working to combat the blaze and limit its spread, with the support of several vehicles and personnel from the Baalbek Regional Center, Hermel Regional Center, and Qobayat Regional Center. The statement indicated that the fire broke out as a result of gasoline leakage from a tanker truck while it was unloading its cargo at the station. The fire spread at lightning speed, destroying a large number of vehicles (15) and a tanker truck, a building consisting of two floors, with the first floor housing five shops and the second two residential apartments. The slippery terrain and the station's location in a densely populated residential neighborhood contributed to the extensive damage, further complicating the firefighting operations. The fire resulted in the deaths of two Lebanese children who were inside a car parked at the station, while their grandfather sustained serious injuries. A Syrian child who was inside another car also died, and two Syrians who were with him were injured and remain in critical condition. Additionally, two citizens sustained various injuries and were transferred to nearby hospitals for treatment. The head of the Civil Defense Center in Labweh was also injured during the extinguishing operations, requiring hospitalization. After extensive attempts, the Civil Defense teams were finally able to fully control the fire and are currently continuing to cool the area to ensure it does not reignite. While the General Directorate of Civil Defense regretted this painful incident, it emphasized the need for adhering to the general safety measures inside fuel distribution stations, such as refraining from smoking or lighting fires, ensuring that equipment is safe, avoiding using mobile phones while refueling, maintaining a functional fire extinguisher and following training on how to use it. The Directorate urged everyone to adhere to the preventative measures to avoid similar incidents. ==========
