German anti-doping body has not been publishing names of drug cheats, broadcaster says

The National Anti Doping Agency of Germany (Nada) has not published the name of convicted doping offenders for a few years, according to a report by broadcasters ARD published on Sunday. Advertisement The report said that some 90 per cent of cases in the past five years have not been made public. According to ARD calculations, the number of athletes who committed a doping-related offence is between 70 and 130. The Nada cited legal risks and data protection as a reason. 'In its anti-doping work, the Nada is committed to transparency, accountability and valid decisions. However, this goes against the current data protection legislation,' Nada CEO Lars Mortsiefer was quoted in the report. [UPDATED] 10.5pct drop in drug addicts due to Kelantan 'rat route' closures

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia has recorded a 10.5 per cent decrease in the number of drug addicts in the first quarter of this year, primarily driven by a decline in Kelantan. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said that this reduction followed government efforts to close illegal entry points in four states, including Kelantan, which were previously identified as major routes for drug smuggling. As of March 2025, a total of 108,409 drug addicts and substance abusers have been detected nationwide, with 60 per cent of the cases involving new addicts. "This marks a 10.5 per cent decrease compared to 121,170 cases recorded during the same period in 2024. The drop can be attributed to the decline in numbers in Kelantan, which is closely linked to our efforts to shut down illegal entry points — one of the main contributors to the influx of drugs," he said. He said that when the government launched enforcement operations, it also intensified awareness programmes. "The data shows that four states near the border — Kelantan, Terengganu, Perlis, and Kedah — are most affected. We have increased police operations, tightened border controls, and conducted more awareness talks. "As a result, we are seeing a decline. However, it's still too early to draw definitive conclusions. According to National Anti-Drugs Agency (Nada) director-general Datuk Ruslin Juson, we need to observe the second and third quarters to gain a clearer picture," he added. Saifuddin has set a new target of limiting the number of new drug users to 60,000. Based on manual analysis by Nada, he said the districts with the highest number of drug-related cases, included Pendang, Kuala Krai, Pasir Putih, and Tanah Merah. He said that individuals involved in drugs were often prone to committing other crimes. "From 395,000 raw data entries we receive every month through police reports, analysis reveals that if someone is already involved under Section 15(1)(b) of the Dangerous Drugs Act — drug use — they are likely to be involved in up to 28 other types of crimes. If they are involved in minor drug possession under Section 12(2) of the same Act, they have the potential to commit up to 11 other crimes," he said. Saifuddin also announced a collaboration between Nada and the National Geospatial Centre to develop an application for drug profiling.

Nada vows to act on misconduct findings involving Negri Sembilan director

KUALA LUMPUR: The National Anti-Drug Agency (Nada) will take immediate action over the alleged misconduct of its Negri Sembilan director. Nada director-general Datuk Ruslin Jusoh said the agency would not compromise or protect any personnel involved in misconduct or breaches of integrity. "Nada acknowledges the report about misconduct involving an officer from Negri Sembilan, as released in the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission's (EAIC) media statement today. "Stern action will be taken against any staff found guilty under the law," he said today. Ruslin reminded all Nada personnel to carry out their duties responsibly and with integrity by complying with standard operating procedures and guidelines under the Anti-Bribery Management System. He said Nada would work with the EAIC to strengthen governance within the agency, particularly in investigations into complaints of misconduct and integrity violations. The commission said it received a complaint against the director, who allegedly ordered a daytime raid on a nightclub even though the complainant claimed criminal activities took place at night.

KL drug addict numbers drop nearly 14pct

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 5,800 individuals were identified as being involved in drug abuse in and around the capital during the first three months of this year, reflecting a 13.8 per cent decrease compared to the same period last year. National Anti-Drug Agency (Nada) director-general Datuk Ruslin Jusoh said current statistics in Kuala Lumpur indicate a drug and substance abuse rate of 253 addicts per 100,000 population. "The main drug category of choice is amphetamine-type stimulants (ATS), accounting for 65 per cent or 3,768 individuals from January to March this year," he said. He said this during the KL Car Free Morning programme in conjunction with the 2025 Anti-Drug Day at Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) square today. More than 1,000 participants took part in the five-kilometre run along the main roads around the capital. He added that the programme aimed to raise public awareness about the dangers of drugs by promoting the message that drug prevention is a shared responsibility in a relaxed, healthy, and inclusive manner. "In addition, this activity helps strengthen the community's role in drug prevention by encouraging involvement from urban residents, especially youth and families, to create a drug-free environment," he said. — BERNAMA
