Nadia Nadim and the pursuit of happiness in women's football
Nadia Nadim was not holding back. Having left Milan for the Swedish side Hammarby she hit out at the Italian club's Dutch manager, Suzanne Bakker, in a forthright interview with Aftonbladet's Amanda Zaza. 'It was a shock to be introduced to her,' said the Afghanistan-born Denmark international, with the two clearly disagreeing on how things should be done. 'I can honestly say that the training sessions at the refugee camps were better.' Nadim, who has more than 100 international caps and has played for teams such as Portland Thorns, Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain, joined Milan in January 2024. Bakker arrived the following summer from Ajax, having won the Dutch league in 2022-23 and finished second the season after. 'We had some meetings and I said I didn't understand how she was behaving,' Nadim said. 'I wanted to solve things so I told her how I felt.' Milan, when contacted by the Guardian regarding Nadim's comments, said they were 'focused on their upcoming football commitments'. Critics would say that Nadim hardly set the world on fire during Bakker's time at the club, the forward scoring once in 14 games, supplying one assist, and that it was time to move on. The key thing for the 37-year-old, meanwhile, seemed to be a search for renewed happiness in her professional life. 'The situation became a bit strange,' Nadim said. 'Life is too short not to be happy.' The loan move to Sweden means that Nadim, who scored on her debut for Hammarby, can play with freedom again and Milan no longer have an unhappy player in their squad. Bakker can continue working the way she wants and it appears a good deal for everyone. Two people not getting the best out of each other happens in workplaces all over the world. In football there is the option of a loan move – or a permanent move – to suit everyone; that is not the case in many other businesses. It was striking that the England international Chloe Kelly also talked about the importance of being happy when her fallout with Manchester City became public at the end of January. The winger posted a long message on her social media channels, saying that her situation was 'having a huge impact on not only my career but my mental wellbeing. The situation has dragged on for too long, it's disappointing and not right. I'm at a pivotal point in my life and my career is so important to me, and [it] is very disappointing that the sport we love can make you feel this way, especially after there's been so much growth in our sport.' She finished her statement with: 'I am human and I will give everything to the game that I love. Ultimately, I just want to be happy again.' A day later Kelly joined Arsenal and she is now playing regularly and has made it back into Sarina Wiegman's England squad before the Euros. 'What we want is that Kelly shows her qualities and she's at her best because it will help the team,' Wiegman said. 'You need the minutes and you can tell she's enjoying it now.' Nadim and Kelly decided to change clubs to break out of a bad situation. Not every player has that opportunity and some stay even if they are not playing. Either way, the impact of a player's wellbeing should never be underestimated. Milan, City, Nadim and Kelly have learned that and will surely bear that in mind when the summer comes and the two loan spells are over. Playing at Soccer Aid gives women a voice
Afghanistan-born footballer Nadia Nadim says she wants to represent women "who don't have access and a voice" when she takes part in this year's Soccer Aid. Nadim fled Afghanistan for Europe with her mother and four sisters when she was 11 after her father was executed by the Taliban. She took up football at a refugee camp and went on to have a stellar career, including playing for Manchester City and representing Denmark. Following the Taliban's return to power in 2021, women's rights in Afghanistan have been severely restricted, and they are banned from competitive sports. It has led to fierce debate over Afghanistan's sporting status, with calls for England's men's cricket team to boycott their Champions Trophy match last month. Nadim, 37, says that Soccer Aid presents a chance to reach a different type of sporting audience - and that through it, she hopes to make more people aware of the issues women have accessing sport in Afghanistan and beyond. "I think it's very important, me being there represents what is possible," she told BBC Sport. "It doesn't even have to be Afghan girls. For me, it is about representing women who don't have access and a voice. "I want to inspire, but also show the ones in power that if someone is given a second chance it can be beautiful. "It is important to create that awareness, to all the audience, and to be up to date as to what is going on around the world." The 37-year-old will be unusual among participants as she is still an active professional sportsperson, playing for AC Milan in the women's Serie A. Nadim joined at the start of the 2024-25 season after a career at the top level in Europe and the USA, and says she is enjoying the challenge of playing at a club, and in a league, which is developing. Serie A Femminile is ranked as the fifth-best league in Europe by Uefa co-efficient, while Milan were only formed in 2018 and have not won a major trophy. "It is very different from other women's leagues [I have played in] - they are still trying to find their way," said Nadim. "I like challenges. I like when you have to fight for things. The reward you get afterwards are better. "We need to change the women's game and improve it. By going to Italy, I wanted to do something for Milan. They have a big men's club - I thought I could do something for women." Milan have made one significant change this season for their women's team with a pioneering maternity policy. If a player becomes pregnant during the final year of their contract, the club will automatically offer a 12-month extension to ensure financial security. "So many female athletes still have to choose - if they start a family, they won't be on a contract and could be out for a year or two," said Nadim. "This allows you to still compete at the highest level. I know Milan is one of the highest teams in Europe to do this. In the US, you can freeze your eggs at some clubs - European teams need that mentality. "Having these kind of measures make it easier to be a top athlete and feel you can start a family." Nadim spent a season and a half at Manchester City, leaving in January 2019 - and says she is amazed at the growth of the women's game in England since, helped by the Lionesses' success in winning Euro 2022 on home territory. In recent seasons, the staging of Women's Super League matches at Premier League stadiums has become standard practice - the Manchester derby will take place at Old Trafford in May. But for Nadim, this will be the first time she has played at Manchester United's ground. "A lot has happened in England since Euro 2022. The mentality has switched and it is beautiful to see," she said. "It makes me proud to see how far the England women's game has moved. And is well deserved. We make the same sacrifices [as men], the minimum you expect is to be treated equally. "Italy is behind where England was a few years ago. Not only the league itself, but the mentality about how women's football has been seen. It was something which was worked on when I was in England, so it will take time. "I've been to a lot of Man Utd games but never been on the field, so now I'm going to experience from the other side. "My husband is a really big United fan, so he's even more excited than me."

Third man charged after teenager hurt in shooting
A third man has been charged in connection with a shooting in Bradford in which a teenager was injured. Riccardo Nadim, 20, of Tarnside Drive, Leeds, has been charged with attempted murder, possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life and possession of an offensive weapon in public. It comes after West Yorkshire Police were called to Dovesdale Road on 9 March following reports an 18-year-old man had suffered serious injuries. Mr Nadim has been remanded in custody and is due to appear at Bradford Magistrates' Court later. Harris Mohammed, 23, of Carr Bottom Avenue in Bradford, has also been charged with attempted murder and Davian Lewis, 19, of Paley Road, Bradford, has been charged with conspiracy to possess a firearm with intent to endanger life. Directed by Ahmed Khaled, it also features Naglaa Badr, Edward, Safaa El Toukhy, and Ahmed Maged. Available exclusively on Al-Ghawy Ahmed Mekky steps away from his usual comedic roles to take on /.a serious drama in Al-Ghawy. The series follows a thug who decides to turn his life around after the tragic loss of his wife. Written by Hani Sarhan and directed by Mando El-Adl, it's one to watch if you enjoy transformation stories and gripping drama. Available on Esh Esh Mai Omar, Maged El Masry, Hala Sedki, and Shimaa Seif star in Esh Esh, a dramatic tale of a young woman forced into a life of dancing. As her past unfolds, viewers get a deep dive into the events that led her there. Expect intense storytelling and powerful performances. Available on Al-Noss Another drama featuring a well-known comedian in a serious role, Al-Noss stars Ahmed Amin as a former thief who reinvents himself as a leader in the fight against British colonial rule. Directed by Yahya Ismail, this historical drama blends action and history for an intense watch. Available on Elmaddah: Ostoret Elahd Returning for its fifth season, Elmaddah: Ostoret Elahd sees Hamada Helal reprise his role as Sabir, battling dark forces in a supernatural battle between good and evil. With Ghada Adel, Khaled Elsawy, Ahmed Bedier, and Khaled Sarhan joining the cast, the stakes are higher than ever. Available on Lam Shamsya Directed by Karim El Shenawy, Lam Shamsya tackles the heavy subject of child abuse and society's response to it. Starring Amina Khalil, Ahmed Salah El Saadany, Youssra Al Lozy, and Mohamed Shahin, this drama aims to spark important conversations. Available on Qahwet El Mahata A mix of crime and mystery, Qahwet El Mahata follows a young prosecutor investigating the murder of a man who left his home in southern Egypt to chase his dreams. Starring Ahmed Ghazi, Bayoumi Fouad, Ahmed Khaled Saleh, and Intisar, and directed by Islam Khairy, this one promises suspenseful twists. Available on Nos El Sha'b Esmo Mohammad A light-hearted break from all the drama, this 15-episode comedy stars Essam Omar, Rania Youssef, Sherine, and Mayan El Sayed. While details on the plot are still under wraps, expect witty humor and sharp storytelling. Available on Zolm El Mastaba Diving into themes of power, control, and the misuse of religion, Zolm El Mastaba is a bold drama starring Eyad Nassar, Fathy Abdel Wahab, and Riham Abdulghafour. Available on Bil Dam (In blood): This is the most high profile release of the season and the most anticipated as it's by creator Nadine Jaber who is responsible for Lil Mawt (mentioned above) and 3a 2amal (With Hope) which was the breakout show last year. It stars Maguy Bou Ghosn (one of the stars of Lil Mawt), and the most jam-packed cast in the history of Ramadan series. Available on Nafas (Breath): This one looks like a typical love triangle but it's got 3 mega stars which will ensure we all watch it regardless. It stars Daniella Rahme (the other star of Lil Mawt), Moatasam Al Nahar, and Abed Fahed. Available on Ta7et Sebe3 2ared (Under the seventh earth) : This thriller is about counterfeit money and also stars a trio of huge stars: Taim Hassan, Caresse Bashar and Muna Wassef. Available on Al Sharnaka (Cocoon): Not much is known about this thriller but it does star Sara Abi Kanaan, a Lebanese actress who I love because she exudes so much charisma and charm.
