Rep. Nadler: GOP should condemn detention of aide at Manhattan office

New York Democratic Rep. Jerrold Nadler on Tuesday called on the Republican chairman of the House Judiciary Committee to condemn the brief detention of a Nadler aide by federal authorities at his lower Manhattan district office last week amid a protest against President Donald Trump's crackdown on undocumented immigrants. Joined by Rep. Jamie Raskin, the Judiciary Committee's ranking Democrat, Nadler demanded Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, stand up for the congressional staffer who was handcuffed Wednesday during protests at the Varick St. building that houses both the Nadler office and an immigration courthouse. 'We call on you, as chairman of the House Committee on the Judiciary, to condemn this aggressive affront to the separation of powers and the safety of members of Congress, our staff, and our constituents,' the letter said. Jordan didn't immediately respond. The Department of Homeland Security said the Nadler aide, who was never arrested, was briefly detained as part of a wider security check to protect federal employees in the building during the protest. But Democrats say the detention is part of an aggressive policy by the Trump administration to squelch public opposition to its plan to deport millions of undocumented immigrants. 'These types of intimidation tactics are completely unwarranted and cannot be tolerated,' the lawmakers wrote to Jordan. 'The decision to enter a congressional office and detain a congressional staff member demonstrates a deeply troubling disregard for proper legal boundaries.' Nadler, who was the Judiciary chairman until this year, has been irate over the incident since it happened. He accused DHS of 'lying' about it, especially a claim that the female staffer was 'harboring rioters.' Along with congressional action, he's calling for a probe into what he considers an abuse of power to target opponents of the Trump administration, but Democrats believe that is unlikely to happen. 'They barged in … and they then said that she pushed back and they shackled her and took her downstairs,' Nadler told CNN on Monday. 'She was obviously traumatized.'

"Unlawful, chaotic and reckless": House Democrats condemn DHS harassment of Nadler aide

In a letter dated June 3, Reps. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., and Jamie Raskin, D-Md., urged Republicans in the House Judiciary Committee to investigate the Department of Homeland Security after agents stormed Nadler's congressional office and handcuffed one of his aides. Nadler and Raskin wrote that these 'intimidation tactics are completely unwarranted and cannot be tolerated.' They go on to assert that the behavior is a part of a 'broader pattern' of the Trump administration's use of 'unlawful, chaotic and reckless tactics.' According to the letter, DHS agents forcefully entered Nadler's office on May 25. A video acquired by Gothamist shows DHS agents attempting to enter a non-public area of Nadler's office, citing the need for a 'security check'. A staffer can be heard asking the agent for a warrant, while the handcuffed aide is heard crying in the background. An agent can be heard telling the aide to 'Stop resisting.' The aide was later released and no charges were filed. In the letter, legislators wrote: 'The decision to enter a congressional office and detain a congressional staff member demonstrates a deeply troubling disregard for proper legal boundaries.' Over the weekend, commenting on the incident, Nadler told The New York Times that the Trump administration is 'behaving like fascists.' Nadler and Raskin's letter urges the chair of the House Judiciary Committee, Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, to condemn the actions and launch an investigation. It's unclear how Jordan, a strong ally of the Trump administration, will respond.

House Dems urge GOP to condemn DHS for handcuffing Rep Nadler staffer, order Noem to testify

Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee sent a letter Tuesday requesting House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, to condemn the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for "forcefully" entering Rep. Jerry Nadler's congressional office and handcuffing a member of his staff. The letter, sent by Nadler and fellow House Judiciary Ranking Member Jamie Raskin, D-Md., disputes DHS' claim that agents were doing a "security check" at Nadler's office. "We therefore urge you to bring the Secretary of the DHS, Kristi Noem, before our Committee immediately to answer our questions about her agency's irresponsible and dangerous actions," the House Democrats said in the letter. Nadler and Raskin said the video released from the incident reveals agents handcuffed a staffer and demanded access to "non-public areas" inside Nadler's office without "asking about the safety and security of his staff." Rep. Nadler Condemns Trump Admin After Staff Member Handcuffed During Congressional Office Security Sweep "These types of intimidation tactics are completely unwarranted and cannot be tolerated. The decision to enter a congressional office and detain a congressional staff member demonstrates a deeply troubling disregard for proper legal boundaries," Nadler and Raskin said. "We call on you, as Chairman of the House Committee on the Judiciary, to condemn this aggressive affront to the separation of powers and the safety of Members of Congress, our staff, and our constituents," Nadler and Raskin said. DHS previously told Fox News Digital the Federal Protective Service (FPS) officers who entered Nadler's office were responding to reports that protesters were inside Nadler's district office in Manhattan. There was a protest outside an immigration courthouse in the same facility as Nadler's office. "Based on earlier incidents in a nearby facility, FPS officers were concerned about the safety of the federal employees in the office and went to the location to ensure the safety and wellbeing of those present," a Homeland Security spokesperson told Fox News Digital. "Officers identified themselves and explained their intent to conduct a security check. However, one individual became verbally confrontational and physically blocked access to the office," the spokesperson added. "The officers then detained the individual in the hallway for the purpose of completing the security check. All were released without further incident." The House Democrats refuted the spokesperson's claim in the letter and criticized the incident as a larger issue within President Donald Trump's crackdown on illegal immigration. "Sadly, this incident is part of a broader pattern by President Donald J. Trump and DHS of using unlawful, chaotic, and reckless tactics in communities across America, as they threaten and intimidate children, members of the clergy, students, as well as Members of Congress and their staffs," they said. Nadler slammed Trump for "sowing chaos" in a statement released Saturday. "The time is now to halt the use of these illegitimate tactics and to ensure that DHS complies with the law and with the norms of common human decency," Nadler and Raskin conclude in the letter. When reached for comment, a DHS spokesperson reiterated their prior statement and told Fox News Digital that "DHS responds to official correspondence through official channels." "Federal Protective Service (FPS) officers responded to information that protesters were present inside U.S. Rep. Jerry Nadler's District Office in Manhattan, New York. Based on earlier incidents in a nearby facility, FPS officers were concerned about the safety of the federal employees in the office and went to the location to ensure the safety and wellbeing of those present," a spokesperson said. "Upon arrival, officers were granted entry and encountered four individuals. Officers identified themselves and explained their intent to conduct a security check, however, one individual became verbally confrontational and physically blocked access to the office. The officers then detained the individual in the hallway for the purpose of completing the security check. All were released without further incident," the spokesperson added. Nadler, Raskin push Jordan for investigation into DHS handcuffing of staffer

Reps. Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.) and Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) are demanding House Judiciary Committee Republicans launch an investigation after officers from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) pushed their way into the New York Democrat's office and handcuffed one of his staffers. The incident began after Nadler's office last week allowed protesters to enter their office after demonstrating at an immigration court housed within the same federal building. While the DHS accused the congressional office of 'harboring rioters,' Nadler referred to those in his office as 'observers.' 'A statement issued later by DHS claimed the agents were doing a 'security check,' and yet the video that has been released shows them handcuffing a staffer, demanding access to non-public areas of Rep. Nadler's office, and never once asking about the safety and security of his staff,' wrote Nadler and Raskin, the top Democrat on the panel, in the joint letter. 'These types of intimidation tactics are completely unwarranted and cannot be tolerated. The decision to enter a congressional office and detain a congressional staff member demonstrates a deeply troubling disregard for proper legal boundaries. We call on you, as Chairman of the House Committee on the Judiciary, to condemn this aggressive affront to the separation of powers and the safety of Members of Congress, our staff, and our constituents.' Nadler during an interview on CNN on Monday blasted the DHS, accusing them of lying about the incident. 'They barged in. And in barging in one of the offices, a very big, heavyset fellow pushed my aide — a very petite young woman — and they then said that she pushed back and they shackled her and took her downstairs,' Nadler told the outlet. 'And she was obviously traumatized.' Video of the incident shows a Nadler staffer crying as she is handcuffed. The DHS later clarified the agents were Federal Protective Service personnel, who provide security at federal buildings. The officials were not there to harass Nadler's staff, the agency said, but to protect it. But the statement does not mention that nearly two dozen people were arrested in connection with the protests. 'Federal Protective Service (FPS) officers responded to information that protesters were present inside U.S. Rep. Jerry Nadler's District Office in Manhattan, New York. Based on earlier incidents in a nearby facility, FPS officers were concerned about the safety of the federal employees in the office and went to the location to ensure the safety and wellbeing of those present. Upon arrival, officers were granted entry and encountered four individuals,' the DHS said in a statement. 'Officers identified themselves and explained their intent to conduct a security check, however, one individual became verbally confrontational and physically blocked access to the office. The officers then detained the individual in the hallway for the purpose of completing the security check. All were released without further incident.' Jordan's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The two Democratic lawmakers called the incident 'part of a broader pattern by President Donald J. Trump and DHS of using unlawful, chaotic, and reckless tactics in communities across America.' 'The time is now to halt the use of these illegitimate tactics and to ensure that DHS complies with the law and with the norms of common human decency,' they wrote. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
