How Bears players felt about most physical training camp practice in years

The post How Bears players felt about most physical training camp practice in years appeared first on ClutchPoints. The heat turned up during the Chicago Bears' training camp. It got so hot that players fought each other. Undoubtedly, it was the most intense training camp the Bears had in recent memory. Many of the players said as much, per Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic. Bears veteran cornerback Nahshon Wright said after one period of live tackling, it became a virtual free-for-all. 'There's a switch you turn on,' Wright said. 'So as soon as you tell somebody we're going live, it's hard to dial back, so it just became live practically the whole practice.' Fellow cornerback Tyrique Stevenson said he had never seen so much hitting throughout a three-day training camp, but didn't mind. 'I feel like that's what we should practice like every day,' he said. 'That's the message the team shot to us, the coaching staff and everybody, that's what we need to see out there every day to be a championship defense and championship offense. Moving forward, that's what we want to see at practice.' Bears defensive tackle Grady Jarrett emphasized the level of difficulty needed for training camp in order to prepare for what is to come. 'You should make this the hardest part of the season because from a physical standpoint, the demands of the week won't be as heavy throughout the week getting to the game day,' he said at the beginning of camp. 'So this is the time when it's time to get hard, time to really challenge yourself, whether it's physically, mentally, emotionally.' Notable moments from Bears training camp Training camp produced some notable moments. Bears running back Roschon Johnson and safety Jonathan Owens got into a scuffle following a play, to which Johnson shrugged off. 'It's just football,' he said. 'Tempers flared.' Tight end Cole Kmet was 'visibly upset' after sustaining an apparent injury. However, Kmet avoided any serious injury. During camp, head coach Ben Johnson provided some 'tough love' for QB Caleb Williams. Bears GM Ryan Poles said that Johnson actively works with Williams both on and off the field. Bears DB coach Al Harris a big part of Nahshon Wright's ascension

Chicago Bears cornerback Nahshon Wright has turned plenty of heads throughout the early stages of training camp, and he's primed to serve a significant role in his first seasons with the team. After a disappointing 2024 season where he was waived by the Minnesota Vikings and later re-signed to the practice squad, Wright signed with Chicago this offseason and, in doing so, was reunited with his former defensive backs coach Al Harris from when the two spent time together with the Dallas Cowboys. Harris, who was hired as part of the big coaching staff shakeup this offseason, comes to the Bears with a respected resume during his time in Dallas, and now has plenty of talent to work with in the Bears secondary. In the short time of their reunion, Harris and Wright have clearly made a connection, with Wright being one of the top breakout stars of training camp, and the former third-round pick of Dallas wants to play for Harris as long as he can in his career. "I would love to play for Al as long as I possibly can,' Wright said. 'He's a hell of a coach. He has produced many All Pros and Pro Bowlers. That's a guy you want to lean on. I understand his language. I understand his coaching. I was with him for almost four years. I understand everything he's trying to bring to this team. He's had me since I was a rookie, so he's kind of taught me everything I know up until this point, besides college, he's played the game, and he's played at a high level. He knows what it looks like. He knows how to coach it." A 14-year veteran during his playing days, Harris made his biggest mark with the Green Bay Packers, and has now established himself as one of the best secondary coaches in the league. For Harris, working with Wright since he was a rookie has strengthened the bond between the two. "He's one of the guys that I got a chance to quote-unquote raise up from the beginning,' Harris said. 'He's very coachable, his football IQ is high, and his size, that's what you want as a corner. His strengths are definitely his size, the knowledge of the game and just taking coaching points from whether it's drills or classroom to the field." Wright is currently entrenched in a roster battle with Tyrique Stevenson for the outside cornerback job opposite Pro Bowler Jaylon Johnson. If Wright continues his impressive summer, not wouldn't be a surprise to see him in a starting role come Week 1. Bears' Nahshon Wright turning heads in cornerback battle

The battle for the No. 2 cornerback position on the Chicago Bears has become an interesting competition through the early stages of training camp. While many expected veteran Tyrique Stevenson to gain back control of the job this season, an unexpected name has entered the mix. Veteran Nahshon Wright, who signed with Chicago this offseason, has made quite the impression during camp. Having previously spent time with the Dallas Cowboys and Minnesota Vikings since entering the NFL in 2021, Wright has been working with the first-team defense throughout training camp, and head coach Ben Johnson is noticing the veteran's development. Johnson has full trust in the veteran cornerback as the battle wages on. "He has been balling,' Johnson said, "He got a lot of turnovers in the spring. I have full trust in him. He's a veteran. Long corner. Being able to stick with some of these receivers. I really like what I have seen from him." For Wright, being waived by the Vikings last season was beyond a disappointment for him, so he's entered this season with a mindset of vengeance and relentlessness in proving he belongs. Appreciating the moments he's earned throughout training camp, Wright has shown gratitude to have his opportunity in Chicago. "Coming off the year I had, it means a lot to be able to come out here and compete and show the work that I've put in and just be able to be out there,' Wright said. 'Being on someone's 90-man roster is an opportunity, so just coming out here and competing every day means a lot." Now, Wright is entering a pivotal time during the preseason where he'll get the opportunity to unseat Stevenson for the CB2 job opposite Jaylon Johnson. And if Johnson isn't ready for Week 1, it feels like a safe bet that Wright will be out there. Why Bears fans should be rooting for Tyrique Stevenson to win CB2 job

The Chicago Bears have a handful of positional battles going on at training camp, including the battle for the second cornerback spot opposite Pro Bowler Jaylon Johnson. With Johnson nursing a leg injury suffered while training before camp, it's been a duo of Tyrique Stevenson and Nahshon Wright running with the starters (with Terell Smith rotating in with Stevenson at times). In Johnson's absence, Wright has been great. Stevenson hasn't been bad by any means, but Wright has been noticeable, which has created a competition between the two. Earlier this summer, defensive coordinator Dennis Allen proclaimed the job is 'completely up for grabs'. As camp progresses, that becomes increasingly believable. With that said, it's fair to root for Stevenson to win the job ahead of Week 1. If you believe that a football team has the best chance to win when they start their most talented players, then you'd like to see Stevenson out there in Week 1's tilt against the Minnesota Vikings. He's the second-most talented cornerback on the roster after Johnson. Did Stevenson make a bad mistake on the Hail Mary play against the Washington Commanders? Of course, he did. Matt Eberflus didn't do a good enough job holding him accountable for it either. As we've seen in training camp so far this summer, however, Ben Johnson is a different kind of head coach. He's holding everyone accountable, and that includes Stevenson. Don't think the new head coach or defensive coordinator doesn't know what happened last year. There is a higher standard going forward. It's good to see that Stevenson has to earn the trust of the new coaching staff. It's on him to take that job and run with it. As far as getting the best talent on the field for as many snaps as possible, Stevenson fits the mold better than anybody in the cornerback room, except for Jaylon Johnson.
