Some DMK allies are in touch with us, claims BJP's Nainar Nagenthiran

BJP State president Nainar Nagenthiran has stirred a political storm by claiming that a few electoral allies of the ruling DMK are in touch with his party as these parties are eager to be with the AIADMK-led National Democratic Alliance in Tamil Nadu. 'Even though we have lot of time for the election, talks are going on with a few political parties now with the DMK. Some of these parties will come to the NDA fold,' Mr. Nagenthiran told reporters here on Wednesday. When asked to name the political parties that are in touch with the BJP, he said the chances of new parties joining the NDA after ditching the DMK was bright even though he could not say anything concrete at this moment. He asserted that the DMK and the alliance it had stitched with other political parties was 'fragile'. 'If the DMK is strong as being projected, let the party contest the upcoming Assembly on its own. Since the NDA in Tamil Nadu is strong, our alliance partner AIADMK-led rule will be in place in the State after the next Assembly polls,' Mr. Nagenthiran said. When he said the Centre had given over ₹10 lakh crore to Tamil Nadu in the past 11 years apart from the State's GST share from the Union Government, Mr. Nagenthiran was asked to give the breakup about the Centre-funded projects in the State, he said: 'I'll give you the details later'. When asked about the carbon dating researches done by a US university on ancient Tamil civilization and the Centre's inexplicable hesitation in giving due recognition to Keeladi excavations, the BJP president said he would visit the site soon and recommend to the Centre based on his findings. 'Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP are holding Tamil and Tamils in high esteem by propagating its ancientness and culture across the globe,' he said. On the Madras High Court's direction to the Centre to release funds to Tamil Nadu under the Right to Education programme, Mr. Nagenthiran wanted to know why Chief Minister M. K. Stalin, who was claiming of managing the fiscal gaps with the State's own resources, was not giving funds for RTE if he was really worried about the education of poor rural students instead of waiting for Central funds. Listing 'achievements' of the Narendra Modi-led Union Government in the past 11 years, Mr. Nagenthiran said the BJP government was according highest priority to the nation's security while building the social, agricultural and health infrastructure in a big way in the country.

BJP should provide accurate data on Central funds given for each project in Tamil Nadu instead of bluntly claiming ₹10-lakh crore released, says Appavu

The BJP leaders and its State president Nainar Nagenthiran, instead of claiming that the Centre had given ₹10-lakh crore for development projects in Tamil Nadu in the past 11 years, should furnish accurate data about the sum of money released as Union government's contribution for each project implemented in the State, Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker M. Appavu said. Speaking to reporters here on Wednesday after disbursing loans to self-help groups, Mr. Appavu said Mr. Nagenthiran, the 'Son of the soil', should be specific by giving breakup for the total amount released by the Centre for each project being implemented in the State instead of giving vague figure of ₹10 lakh. Even though the Centre was claiming for the past several years that it was constructing All India Institute of Medical Sciences at Madurai after Prime Minister laid foundation stone in January 2019, there was no progress in the work all the six years for want of funds from the Centre. While ₹701 crore released by the Centre for implementing railway projects in Tamil Nadu had been returned to the Central exchequer without using it, the Union Government had given a meagre ₹7,000 crore for the Phase II of the Chennai Metro Project, costing a whopping ₹63,000 crore. Hence, the Tamil Nadu Government, after contributing ₹21,000 crore as its share, had stood guarantor for the loan of ₹35,000 crore for completing this much-needed infrastructure project. 'When Edappadi K. Palaniswami was the Chief Minister, Union Home Minister Amit Shah laid foundation stone for Chennai Metro Phase II even though neither clearance nor fund was given by the Centre. After the Tamil Nadu government approached the Court seeking direction to the Union government for releasing Central funds to the State under the Right to Education scheme benefiting the poor children. While giving a trivial portion of just ₹1.50 lakh for constructing a ₹15-lakh-worth apartment meant for the poor families and compelling the State governments to bear the remaining portion, the Centre has named it as 'Prime Minister Awas Yojana'. Is it fair?' Mr. Appavu asked. When asked about Mr. Nainar Nagenthiran's assertion that the BJP was in touch with a few electoral allies of the DMK to woo them to the National Democratic Alliance, Mr. Appavu said: 'Former Minister K.T. Rajenthira Bhalaji has recently observed that there would be no room for communalism in the alliance led by Mr. Edappadi Palaniswami, who is capable of taking independent decisions. Hence he'll take the right decision at the right time. Will the AIADMK be with the BJP till the end of the Assembly polls?'

As AIADMK picks two ex-MLAs for Rajya Sabha polls, Annamalai may have missed the bus this time

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was trying to get him accommodated through the quota of one of its allies such as the Telegu Desam Party (TDP) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), but party leaders say that's not happening for now. Elections are to be held for six Rajya Sabha seats from Tamil Nadu on 19 July. In Tamil Nadu's 234-member assembly, the AIADMK-led alliance in the state has the numbers to send two members to the Upper House, while the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has the numbers to send four. Chennai: K. Annamalai, who was replaced as Tamil Nadu BJP chief in April to smoothen the road for a tie-up with the AIADMK, may not be accommodated in the Rajya Sabha this year since BJP ally AIADMK has already declared the names of two candidates for the polls. BJP state president Nainar Nagenthiran told ThePrint that Annamalai would be accommodated at the national level by the party's national leadership at an appropriate time. 'It necessarily need not be the Rajya Sabha. He may be given a post at the national level to build the party. It will be decided by the national leadership,' Nainar Nagenthiran told ThePrint. It may be recalled that the alliance between the AIADMK and the BJP broke in September 2023, when Annamalai was the state president of BJP. On 11 April, Nainar Nagenthiran filed nominations for the post of BJP president and Annamalai stepped aside, paving way for an alliance between the two parties. It was on the same day, Union minister Amit Shah announced the revival of the alliance. The next set of vacancies for the Rajya Sabha will come up only in April 2026, when states including Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal and Haryana will elect their new members. BJP state vice-president Narayanan Thirupathy said that Annamalai would be accommodated at the national level by the party's national leadership at an appropriate time. Meanwhile, the AIADMK named two candidates— and the Rajya Sabha on Sunday. Belonging to a Christian Nadar community, Inbadurai is a practicing criminal lawyer in Madras High Court and a former MLA from Radhapuram between 2016 and 2021. He joined the party in 1983 and served as the special government pleader in the Madras High Court between 2011 and 2016 during the AIADMK period. He is the party's advocate wing president. Dhanapal, belonging to the Adi Dravidar caste, a Scheduled Caste, is a party's old timer and former MLA from Thiruporur between 1991 and 1996. He has been active in politics ever since MGR founded the party in 1972. In a statement, AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami assured that a Rajya Sabha seat will be allocated to the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam in 2026, hinting that the DMDK is still in alliance with his party. However, DMDK general secretary Premalatha Vijayakanth said that it was the 'duty' of the AIADMK to allocate a Rajya Sabha seat. Asked if the DMDK is still part of the AIADMK-led alliance, she told the media in Chennai that they would announce the alliance in their party's conference in Cuddalore in January 2026, months before the 2026 assembly election. 'Since the Rajya Sabha seat to the DMDK is only close to the elections, we will also announce our stands close to the election,' Premalatha Vijakanth said. She also thanked Chief Minister for passing a resolution at the DMK's general council meeting in Madurai, condoling the death of DMDK founder Vijayakanth. Political analyst Raveendran Duraisamy pointed out that it was time for the AIADMK to send a message to its party workers rather than the alliance partners. 'At a time when the party is gearing up for the 2026 assembly elections, the party leadership has felt that it is the need of the hour to reassure its workers that they would be rewarded for their work, irrespective of the positions they hold now. That's what it shows by the appointment of the old-timer Dhanapal,' Duraisamy told ThePrint. He called upon the state government to identify and deport illegal immigrants from Pakistan and Bangladesh. He sought stern action on those spreading baseless rumours about the Indian army. Leading the protest near the Rajarathinam stadium at Egmore, here, in which former Governor Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan too participated, party chief Nainar Nagenthiran condemned the brutal slaying of tourists in Jammu and Kashmir on April 22. Chennai, May 5 (PTI) The BJP members staged a protest across Tamil Nadu on Monday condemning the heinous killing of tourists by terrorists in Pahalgam and demanded the state government to identify and deport illegal immigrants from Pakistan and Bangladesh. Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting L Murugan said terrorism in any form was unacceptable. 'Anyone who speaks in favor of terrorism should be isolated by the society. This is the time to make the world realise that 140 crore Indians stand united behind the families of the 26 people who were killed in Pahalgam,' he said. In a post on the social media platform 'X', Murugan said Pakistan, which was the root cause of terrorism, must be taught a lesson. 'The Central Government, led by the Honorable Prime Minister of India, @narendramodi Ji, is taking strict action against Pakistan, which is spreading the poison of terrorism,' he said. TN BJP state convener, coordination committee, H Raja, participated in the protest held in Dindigul, while Mahila Morcha national president and MLA Vanathi Srinivasan took part in the protest in Coimbatore.
