Second double murder within 24 hours stuns police

Patna: In a chilling repeat of violence, two youths were found shot dead in Patna district on Tuesday morning, marking the second double murder in the city within 24 hours. The incident has heightened fears and raised serious concerns about law enforcement in the state capital. The bullet-ridden bodies of the victims were found by villagers along the Majahuli-Singhada road under the jurisdiction of Bikram police station. The villagers, who were out tending to their farmland, immediately informed the local police, who rushed to the spot and sent the bodies for post-mortem examination. Police recovered 13 spent cartridges, clothing and a motorcycle from the spot. The victims were identified as Sonu Kumar and Raushan Kumar, both residents of the same locality under Bikram police station. "Prima facie, it appears both were shot dead. We are investigating the case from all angles," said Patna SSP Awakash Kumar. He added that one of the victims, Sonu Kumar, was allegedly involved in the 2023 murder of a local chowkidar (village watchman). "We are probing whether the killings are connected to that incident," the SSP said, adding that the background of the second victim is also being examined. Paliganj SDPO Umeshwar Choudhary said police were conducting raids to arrest the absconding suspects. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Classic Solitaire , Built for Desktop Play Solitaire Install Now Undo He said they received information about the incident around 6am. 100-bed medicine ward inaugurated at NMCH

1 2 3 Patna: Health minister Mangal Pandey and assembly Speaker Nand Kishore Yadav on Saturday jointly inaugurated the new 100-bed medicine ward at the Nalanda Medical College and Hospital (NMCH) in Patna built with an expenditure of Rs 7.5 crore. Pandey said the tuberculosis demonstration training centre being constructed there will be ready by Aug this year. The Speaker said the health services in the state were improving day by day and there was no shortage of medicine and doctors in hospitals now. The health minister said the 100-bed medicine ward has been built on the upper floor to get rid of the waterlogging problem on the ground floor during the monsoon season. Earlier, there were 128 beds in the general medicine department. "Now, with the additional 100, the total number of beds will be 228. There is a plan to add 400 more beds in the future. There are a total of 1,189 beds in the NMCH now. There is now a provision of an oxygen pipeline on every bed," Pandey said. He said the food quality was also improved as the responsibility of food and cleanliness was given to the JEEViKa didis. The minister claimed that Bihar was on top in the supply of standard medicine for the last eight months continuously and now 496 types of medicines were available at the NMCH. "Before 2005, the condition of Bihar in the health sector was very pathetic. In the last 20 years, unprecedented work has been done in the health sector under the leadership of CM Nitish Kumar," he said. Pandey said the construction work of TVDC (Tuberculosis Training and Demonstration Centre) was going on at a fast pace at a cost of Rs 28.34 crore. It will be completed by Aug 15, he said. The construction work of TB Medical College at Kadamkuan in Patna was also starting at a cost of Rs 204.44 crore. Patna mayor Sita Sahu, NMCH principal Dr Usha Kumari, superintendent Dr Rashmi Prasad, along with others were present on the occasion.

Surge in violence by jilted lovers alarms police

Patna: A worrying trend has emerged in Bihar with a string of violent incidents involving jilted lovers attacking or killing their former girlfriends. The pattern points to a troubling sense of entitlement and a lack of emotional resilience among young men. Several cases across the state, including Patna, have highlighted how rejection is fuelling deadly outbursts. Police are investigating the incidents and have pledged to bring the perpetrators to justice, but the frequency of such crimes underscores a deeper social problem. On March 29, 21-year-old Rahul Raj shot dead his 20-year-old girlfriend, Arpita, before killing himself on a ghat near J P Ganga Path in Patna. Both were students. Raj hailed from Madhubani, while Arpita was from Lalganj in Vaishali. They had come to Patna to meet, but after an argument at Janardan Ghat, the encounter turned fatal. On March 21, Nakul Sharma (20) shot his girlfriend, Aparna, in the leg near a medical shop close to AIIMS-Patna under the Phulwarisharif police station area. "The couple were in a relationship for several years. They had an argument over their marriage plans, which led to the shooting," said Phulwarisharif SDPO Sushil Kumar Singh. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Click Here - This Might Save You From Losing Money Expertinspector Click Here Undo In another incident on March 25 in Bhojpur district, 24-year-old Aman Kumar shot dead a 16-year-old girl at Ara railway station as she was about to board a train to New Delhi. He then shot himself before bystanders could intervene. The girl had rejected Aman's proposal. Dr Santosh Kumar, head of the psychiatry department at Nalanda Medical College and Hospital (NMCH), attributed such cases to a lack of emotional regulation. "Young people today have poor coping skills and struggle to handle stress in a healthy manner. Rapid breakdowns in relationships are often due to poor communication. The solution lies in a stronger family support system, building resilience, and providing mental health outlets," he said. Former Bihar director general of police (DGP) Abhayanand said while police operate within legal parameters, they should also undertake sociological assessments, as done in some Western countries. "The police should examine the accused's background, mental state and academic history when preparing investigation reports. Since youths are the future of the nation, there should be provisions for psychological counselling for such offenders," he said.
