Nine stories by govt school teachers from DK adopted into textbooks

1 2 Mangaluru: A total of nine stories written by government school teachers from Dakshina Kannada have been adopted into the Nali-Kali Vachaka textbooks of government schools across the state. Three stories each, of teachers Ramesh Ulaya, Aravinda Kudla, and Prashanth Ananthady, were selected. These textbooks aim to help children from the primary section under the Nali Kali programme. The Nali Kali, an activity-based learning programme, focuses on enhancing early learning in Kannada, basic numeracy, and environmental science, primarily for children in primary school. The stories adopted by these teachers have both pictures and words, which help children to learn joyfully. Ulaya, head teacher at Govt Higher Primary School, Sanjay Nagar, Puttur, said that Nalikali Vachaka textbooks with several stories were printed and distributed as textbooks from this academic year. "A year ago, a total 60 teachers from govt schools from across the state were invited for two days of workshops. During the workshop, they wrote more than 150 stories which speak on science, fiction, and others. Among them, nine written by the teachers from Dakshina Kannada were chosen for the textbook, which is now supplied across the state," said Ulaya. His works 'Abraca Dabraka Gadagada', 'Nalliyalli Haalu', and 'Tiruguva Fan' were chosen. The first two works are related to fantasy, and the last one is about science, explaining how a fan works. Three works—'Roopantara, a Metamorphosis', 'Hulivesha', and 'Bekkige Sikkidenu'—written by Aravinda Kudla, a headmaster of Government Higher Primary School at Moodambail, Bantwal taluk, were chosen as well. Aravinda said that these works will be in the textbook for many years. A teacher at Government High School, Kombettu Puttur, Prashanth Ananthady's works 'Puttana Hosamane', 'Jaanu Iruve-Munni Kappe', and 'Chinnu Hulivina Mane' were selected for the textbook.

Bilingual sections in over 4k Karnataka schools approved for academic year 2025-26

Bengaluru: With an overwhelming demand for English medium, the department of school education and literacy has announced the opening of bilingual sections — English medium along with the existing Kannada medium — in 4,134 schools across the state. Of the total 1,465 govt schools in Bangalore North and Bangalore South, 1,103 have been given permission to start the sections. There are 730 schools in Bangalore South and 373 in Bangalore North from class 1. As many as 11,555 potential schools applied from 33 educational districts. The first 15 schools from each taluk with the highest student enrolment were selected. English-medium sections started under the HD Kumaraswamy regime in 2019-20. Since then, 2,405 schools have had English-medium sections, including Karnataka Public Schools. In 2024-25, 2,000 govt schools were permitted to open the new sections. The first batch is in class 7 now. Since many of the schools knew they were likely to get permission, they already got ready for it and started enrolling students. Since class 1 is the Nali Kali system, the children will not need textbooks," said a senior official. However, educationists warned that the last-minute plans shouldn't affect the training of teachers. "Many English teachers in govt schools aren't specialists in English. They often face challenges related to fluency, confidence, and effective methods of teaching English. Teacher training and teacher mentoring are important in order to upskill teachers, to sensitise them towards curriculum changes, pedagogical and technological innovations, and help them update their knowledge and teaching practices," said a teacher trainer. "Most guest teachers aren't trained in English-medium sections. This is because every year, new teachers are appointed and there are no budget provisions for involving guest teachers in training programmes. Even if they are called for training, they aren't given training material, food, or travel allowance. I hope this time there will be a change," he added.

Karnataka government mulls phasing out Nali Kali, multi-class teaching system, in primary schools

Bengaluru: The Karnataka education department is actively considering a proposal to discontinue the Nali Kali system and convert multi-grade classrooms into single-grade setups in govt primary schools. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The move is being discussed in light of concerns over learning levels and enrolment trends. Nali Kali, an activity-based and self-paced learning system, currently groups students from multiple grades in the same classroom. "Nali Kali is multi-class teaching. We are requesting the govt to drop this system and make each grade different. The govt has shown a positive approach in this regard," Chandrashekhar Nugli, secretary, Karnataka State Primary School Teachers Association, said. A senior department official said the multi-grade approach may be impacting student learning outcomes and affecting enrolment in govt schools. In a recent meeting with chief secretary Shalini Rajneesh, the teachers' association also recommended introduction of NCERT textbooks from class 1 onwards. At present, Karnataka follows its own state-developed textbooks, unlike CBSE-affiliated schools, which use NCERT content. The Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board has separately suggested reducing SSLC exam pass mark from 35 to 33, in line with CBSE norms. It also proposed revising the first language paper's total marks from 125 to 100. Further, the association sought the appointment of clerks in primary schools and suggested outsourcing toilet cleaning to an external agency. "There have been several instances where teachers were suspended due to controversy surrounding toilet cleaning. We suggest that an outside agency can be given the task for a cluster of schools," Nugli said. They also flagged the mismatch between rising egg prices and stagnant budgets in the midday meal scheme.

Revitalised Kuthlur government school all set to reopen on Friday

A portion of the corridor at the government school in Kuthlur village, Belthangady taluk of Dakshina Kannada, features murals of all eight Kannada Jnanpith award recipients, including Kota Shivarama Karanth. Ra. Bendre and Kuvempu. Another section of the corridor features murals of the human body, an Indian map, and portraits of national personalities, including Mahatma Gandhi and Saalumarada Thimmakka. A team of artists led by Sudhakar from Moodbidri has given a new look to the school, which reopens on May 30, Friday. President of the School Development and Monitoring Committee, Ramachandra Bhat, said the school follows the 'Nali Kali' (play and learn) system of teaching primary school students. The mural paintings have been created to support this teaching system. A scene of an aquarium has been painted in a classroom that is scheduled to be turned into a smart classroom. There are paintings related to popular tourist places, such as Mysuru Palace, Halebidu, Vidhana Soudha, and Jog Falls, in another classroom. The solar system has also been painted in a portion of the school building. The exterior of the new toilet, constructed using ₹8 lakh from MRPL's CSR funds, has a painting showing the scene in a village,' Mr. Bhat said. A fresh coat of paint has been applied to the school using funds sanctioned by the Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who recently received a bag full of vegetables grown in the school, has donated two computers and a projector to the school. Mr. Siddaramaiah's Press Advisor, K.V. Prabhakar, has donated a pair of uniforms and a bag to each of the 104 school students. BASF India donated books and other materials, worth ₹1 lakh, to students. A function to felicitate all the donors will be held in the school on May 30, Mr. Bhat said. The Dakshina Kannada Union of Working Journalists had conducted its 'village stay' at this school in 2018, acting as a bridge between the government and the people of the village to address their grievances.
