Over 600 Naloxboxes installed across Monroe County to fight overdoses
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Over 600 Naloxone boxes have been installed across Monroe County to fight overdose-related fatalities.
The boxes — also known as Naloxboxes — were installed by the Monroe County Department of Health's Addiction Services IMPACT team. To date, they have installed 605 Naloxboxes across the county, with the most recent at the Public Safety Building on Exchange Boulevard.
Naloxone, according to experts, is a form of Narcan that reverses an opioid overdose by blocking the effects on the brain and restores normal breathing. Monroe County wanted to expand the Naloxboxes availability to fight the opioid and fentanyl epidemic.
'Naloxone greatly improves the chance of survival post-overdose,' said Monroe County Addiction Services Director Dr. Tisha Smith. 'Saving lives provides us with the opportunity to educate and motivate individuals towards a recovery pathway.'
