World Nature Conservation Day 2025: History While the exact origin of the day is not clear, it is understood that World Nature Conservation Day gained prominence in the early 1970s with the rise of global environmental awareness practices and many nature conservation efforts. It has been celebrated across the world for several years, promoting awareness and efforts to protect nature from an increasing set of threats, including weather fluctuations, climate upheaval, natural disasters, deforestation, pollution and loss of biodiversity. Campaigns, workshops and various green activities are conducted across the globe to mark the celebrations for the World Nature Conservation Day, inspiring everyone to take time out from their busy lifestyles for nature conservation and save the resources provided by Mother Earth. In India, the Indian government has carried out key initiatives for environmental protection, including the National Mission for Green India (GIM), which focuses on safeguarding and sustaining India's dense forests that feature a host of species that deserve our care and attention. It also helps revive degraded forests in the country. Namami Gange Mission is another valuable government initiative for nature conservation, helping clean and rejuvenate the great Ganga River. It is an effort to address the rise of pollution levels inside it and protect the wetlands along the river. Under LiFE, people are encouraged to inculcate good habits to preserve nature and its ecosystem in their regular lifestyles, including no single-use plastic usage, saving water, reducing electricity consumption and recycling waste. UP launches river revival scheme to rejuvenate 50 rivers, restore ecology

The Uttar Pradesh government has launched a comprehensive river revival scheme aimed at rejuvenating the state's disappearing, polluted, and seasonal rivers. The initiative is being implemented in coordination with the Namami Gange Mission, Jal Jeevan Mission, and the Forest campaign seeks to restore rivers to their natural state by reviving water flow, protecting catchment areas, ensuring pollution-free streams, enhancing groundwater levels, and safeguarding local ecology and initiative forms part of a larger plan prepared in 2019 to conserve small rivers and tributaries across the state, with active coordination between the departments of environment, water, agriculture, forest, and panchayati raj. Under this new campaign, authorities have identified rivers in all 75 districts that were either dry or at risk due to pollution or encroachment. The government has undertaken efforts to revive these water bodies using sustainable and scientific improve water quality, the administration is treating sewage and industrial waste before releasing it into rivers. Urban sewage is being redirected to Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs), and biological techniques are being used to enhance water measures like the construction of check dams, desilting, riverbank strengthening, and rainwater harvesting have been adopted to sustain river efforts have begun to yield results. So far, 50 rivers have been rejuvenated across a total stretch of 3,363 kilometres. This revival has provided new life to rural areas and improved irrigation access for farmers. As part of the initiative, the government is also reviving small rivers and water bodies in 1,011 Ganga gram boost water storage in rural regions, the state has constructed and reinforced 3,388 ponds. These ponds now serve as reliable water sources for agriculture, livestock, and domestic Forest Department, in collaboration with district Ganga committees, is planting trees on a massive scale along riverbanks. More than 2.14 crore trees have been planted along the banks of 82 rivers in the state, contributing to ecological restoration and flood technology is also playing a crucial role in the revival drive. Institutions such as IIT Kanpur, IIT BHU, BBAAU Lucknow, and IIT Roorkee are providing technical expertise and guidance to ensure the success of the monitor progress, the government has formed committees in each administrative division, headed by the respective divisional commissioner. Haridwar strengthens Ganga cleanliness with advanced sewage treatment

Haridwar (Uttarakhand) [India], July 7 (ANI): Haridwar, one of the holiest cities in India and a key site of the Kumbh Mela, is making major strides in preserving the purity of the river Ganga through enhanced sewage treatment infrastructure under the Namami Gange Mission. Working towards the goal of a clean and rejuvenated Ganga, the city now hosts two state-of-the-art Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) with a combined capacity of 82 million litres per day (MLD). These include a 68 MLD STP at Jagjeetpur and a 14 MLD STP in the Sarai area. With these additions, Haridwar's total sewage treatment capacity now stands at 145 MLD, operating at peak efficiency. The Jagjeetpur STP, based on Sequential Batch Reactor (SBR) technology, is the largest in Uttarakhand and holds the distinction of being India's first STP under the Hybrid Annuity Model. It is also the country's first 'Pink STP', with 50 per cent of its staff comprising women, promoting gender inclusivity in environmental management. 'Earlier, all domestic waste used to flow directly into the Ganga. The biggest achievement of our plant is that we are now able to treat all the sewage generated by our community effectively,' said Manoj Kumar Verma, in-charge of the Jagjeetpur STP. Similarly, the 14 MLD STP in Sarai is effectively treating sewage using modern techniques. The treated water is being reused for irrigation, benefiting the local agricultural community and helping to mitigate groundwater depletion. Sandeep Rathore, a local farmer, said that the change in groundwater is noticeable. 'The water from this STP is being used for irrigation, and the difference compared to groundwater is clearly noticeable. Crops irrigated with this treated water grow much better. The nutrient content and overall quality of the water are excellent; it truly nourishes the crops,' Rathore said. These advanced facilities are future-ready, equipped to manage rising waste volumes stemming from the city's growing population and the increasing influx of pilgrims during major festivals such as the Char Dham Yatra. These initiatives mark important milestones under the Namami Gange Mission, launched by the Government of India to restore the Ganga to its pristine form. Apart from pollution abatement, the mission also aims to protect the religious, cultural, and ecological significance of riverside cities, such as Haridwar. The progress in Haridwar reflects the collective commitment of stakeholders towards sustainable development and river conservation. (ANI)

UP reports 68% improvement in river, reservoir water quality: UPPCB

Lucknow: Under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) undertook a series of effective measures to enhance the water quality of rivers and reservoirs across the state. As a result, UPPCB's 2024 report reveals 68.8% improvement in water purity across state compared to 2023. "This reflects the success of sustained initiatives, stringent monitoring and special campaigns led by the state govt to combat water pollution," said an official. The UPPCB conducted water quality tests at 176 locations throughout the state in 2024, recording improvements at 120 sites. Under flagship initiatives such as the Namami Gange Mission and the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Uttar Pradesh ramped up its capacity for wastewater treatment. As of April 2025, a total of 152 STPs have been installed, of which 141 are fully operational and 126 are in compliance with the prescribed environmental standards. While 6 STPs are currently in the testing phase, 15 are expected to reach full operational capacity shortly. Despite this, challenges persist in certain regions. To address these issues, the govt and local administration are working in tandem to ensure full compliance. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Salford This Tip Helps Ease Joint Pain Fast Jupiter Labs Learn More Undo In its commitment to enforcing environmental regulations, the UPPCB took strict action against non-compliant STPs. Between Oct 2022 and Apr 2025, environmental fines totalling ₹11.8 crore were imposed on erring STPs. However, only ₹7.30 lakh has been recovered so far, prompting the board to focus on strengthening the penalty recovery mechanism. The CM has placed special emphasis on the restoration and conservation of major rivers, such as Ganga, Yamuna and Gomti, as well as smaller water bodies.

Funds sanctioned to resolve sewage overflow in Civil Lines

Kanpur: The Kanpur Municipal Corporation (KMC) on Thursday sanctioned a sum of Rs 92.24 lakh to UP Jal Nigam (Rural) to resolve the issue persistent sewage water logging near Amba Nursing Home in Civil Lines area. The problem reportedly originated nearly four years ago when I&D project of nullahs under the Namami Gange Mission was implemented. Since then, sewer chambers have consistently overflowed in the area resulting in frequent water logging in Civil Lines as well as on VIP Road. Mayor Pramila Pandey told reporters that a team of Jalkal engineers visited the site to examine the situation. It was observed that a 1,600 mm diameter rising line had been divided into two lines of 800 mm diameter each, and later recombined into a 1,600 mm diameter rising line leading to reduced flow in the system. The UP Jal Nigam (Rural) work agency stated that the original 1,600 mm diameter line was laid under JNNURM and that the Muir Mill nullah was not crossed near Amba Nursing Home. In 2019, during Ardh Kumbh, the line was connected to two pipelines of 800 mm and one of 450 mm diameter. These three pipelines are insufficient to handle the pressure of the sewer flow during peak hours, resulting in overflow in the Civil Lines area. The engineers concluded that the only viable solution was to lay a 1,600 mm diameter RCC pipeline, estimated to cost around Rs 92.24 lakh. Based on this assessment and after discussions with officials, it was decided to allocate the sanctioned amount to the UP Jal Nigam (Rural). As the chairman of the Committee of the 15th Commission, Mayor Pramila Pandey sanctioned the funds and instructed UP Jal Nigam (Rural) to commence the work without delay.
