Last Updated: Emergency response teams soon rushed to the spot and carried out rescue operations At least six persons, including four women and a two-year-old child, died and four others were injured after a slab of the top floor of a four-storey building collapsed in Maharashtra's Kalyan on Tuesday, officials said. The incident took place today afternoon when the slab of the fourth floor caved in and the debris crashed through the lower floors of the Saptashrungi Building located in Mangalaragho Nagar area in Kalyan East. 'The slab from the fourth floor had collapsed to the ground floor," a senior police inspector said as quoted by news agency PTI. The deceased have been identified as Namaswi Shrikant Shelar (2), Pramila Kalcharan Sahu (56), Sunita Neelanchal Sahu (38), Sushila Narayan Gujar (78), Venkat Bhima Chavan (42) and Sujata Manoj Wadi (38). Four people were injured in the incident, including two children aged four, who were admitted to different hospitals. Emergency response teams from the Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation's Fire Department and the TDRF (Thane Disaster Response Force) soon rushed to the spot and carried out rescue operations amid heavy downpour. 'Rescue operations are underway with full force. The building has been cordoned off, and structural safety checks will follow once the immediate rescue work is complete," the police officer added. CM Fadnavis Announces Rs 5 Lakh Ex-Gratia Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed deep anguish over the incident and announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the next of kin of each deceased. 'In a tragic incident in Kalyan, the roof of a building collapsed, unfortunately causing loss of lives of 6 citizens. My humble tributes to them. We stand strongly with the families in these difficult times. The rescue operations at the site has been completed, and the Municipal Commissioner was personally present at the location. 5 individuals were injured in the incident and are currently under treatment at the hospital. The district administration is closely monitoring the situation, and the injured are in a stable condition. I pray for their speedy recovery. The families of the deceased will receive financial assistance of ₹5 lakh from the State Government," the Maharashtra CM said in a post on X. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Navi Mumbai till 11 pm today, predicting heavy pre-monsoon showers. It also issued a Red alert for Nashik, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg till 10 pm. (With inputs from PTI)
