'PSP for Pole-Struck Politicians': Netizens get creative after party founder Tan Cheng Bock almost gets hit by carpark barrier, Singapore News

From Tan Chuan-Jin's viral running photo to Jamus Lim's iconic "cockles of my heart" catchphrase, memes and jokes are what make something as serious as the General Election more lighthearted. And for the 2025 General Election, Progress Singapore Party (PSP) has unintentionally got the ball rolling. In several viral videos, founder and chairman Tan Cheng Bock, secretary-general Leong Mun Wai and a PSP supporter were seen narrowly avoiding being hit by a carpark barrier on Nomination Day (April 23). The trio had alighted from their car outside a coffeeshop near Nan Hua High School and after their vehicle drove into the carpark, the barrier dropped. Leong was quick to catch it before it hit anyone and as he did so, a man donning the PSP shirt ran to assist them. While thankfully no one was harmed, tickled netizens got creative. In a Reddit thread, several noted that this is the first meme of the 2025 General Election, while another excitedly said: "Let the memes begin." Some came up with creative nicknames for Tan and Leong, such as "Tan Cheng Bonk" and "Leong Mun Whack". One cheekily said that PSP stands for "Pole-Struck Politicians". Another joked that this was not the way for PSP to "raise the bar" on their campaign. But there were other less amused ones who were perplexed by how the incident came about. One netizen wondered why the trio had walked under a raised carpark barrier in the first place. Another questioned why the three had been standing on the road. For our GE2025 microsite, visit here. GE2025: West Coast-Jurong West GRC sees rematch between PAP and PSP, Singapore News

The Progress Singapore Party (PSP) will take on the People's Action Party (PAP) in the western end of Singapore again after the two teams of candidates were nominated at Nan Hua High School on April 23. West Coast GRC saw the narrowest of vote difference at General Election 2020, with PAP claiming 51.68 per cent of the share. The new five-member West Coast-Jurong West GRC, which was formed mainly with parts of West Coast GRC, will be contested by PAP's anchor minister Desmond Lee, Shawn Huang, Ang Wei Neng, new faces Cassandra Lee and Dr Hamid Razak, and PSP's Dr Tan Cheng Bock, Leong Mun Wai, Hazel Poa, Sumarleki Amjah and Sani Ismail. National Development Minister Lee thanked residents for giving him the privilege to serve during the previous term. "During this time, we've visited you and we've met you at events and walkabouts. We've served you at meet the people sessions. We are here to serve you and we seek your support over the next five years, so we can look after our estate and continue to serve you for five years and onwards," he said. West Coast-Jurong West now includes Taman Jurong, a ward held by President Tharman Shanmugaratnam for more than 20 years before he resigned in 2023 to contest the presidential election. It also no longer includes areas of Dover, Telok Blangah, HarbourFront and Sentosa, based on the new electoral boundaries released on March 11. Nan Hua High School is also the nomination centre for Jurong East-Bukit Batok GRC, Jurong Central SMC and Pioneer SMC. For our GE2025 microsite, visit here. [[nid:716987]]

GE2025: Desmond Lee's PAP team to defend West Coast-Jurong West GRC in rematch against Tan Cheng Bock's PSP

SINGAPORE: The Progress Singapore Party (PSP) will once again challenge the People's Action Party (PAP) in the redrawn West Coast-Jurong West GRC, setting up a high-profile rematch from the 2020 General Election. Candidates from both parties successfully filed their nomination papers at Nan Hua High School on Wednesday (Apr 23). PSP chairman Tan Cheng Bock, secretary-general Leong Mun Wai and first vice-chairperson Hazel Poa – all part of the team that nearly unseated the PAP in 2020 – will return to the fray. Joining them are newcomers Sani Ismail and Sumarleki Amjah. They will go head-to-head with a PAP team led by Minister for National Development Desmond Lee. The slate includes former West Coast MP Ang Wei Neng, former Jurong GRC MP Shawn Huang and two new candidates – orthopaedic surgeon Hamid Razak and lawyer Cassandra Lee. "Thank you for giving us the privilege to serve you over the past five years," said Mr Lee, addressing the crowd at Nan Hua High School, as PAP supporters cheered and waved party flags. "We are here to serve you and we seek your support over the next five years, to look after your estate and continue to serve you for five years and onwards." The five PSP members took the stage next, taking turns to address the crowd in English, Mandarin, Tamil and Malay. "We are back and ready to serve you," said Dr Tan, starting off the speeches to raucous cheers from supporters clad in red. Addressing the crowd in Mandarin, Ms Poa invited PSP's opponents to "a clean debate". "We are grateful for the strong support," said Mr Leong, noting that the electoral boundaries have changed but the team is not discouraged. "We have a strong manifesto, with many policies to help Singaporeans to have better lives."

Singapore election 2025 Tan Cheng Bock

[SINGAPORE] Progress Singapore Party's (PSP) chairman Dr Tan Cheng Bock is leading the party's A-team against the ruling People's Action Party (PAP) in West Coast-Jurong West GRC, in what is likely to be his last foray in elections. Candidates from both parties successfully filed their nomination papers at Nan Hua High School on Wednesday (Apr 23). Contesting alongside Tan, who at 85 is the oldest election candidate, are Non-Constituency Members of Parliament (NCMPs) Leong Mun Wai, 65, and Hazel Poa, 54. First-time candidates Sumarleki Amjah, 53, and Sani Ismail, 49, are also on the party slate for the newly formed GRC. The incumbents will be led by National Development Minister Desmond Lee, 48, who took over the helm after former transport minister S Iswaran was jailed last October for obtaining gifts as a public servant. The other candidates on the PAP slate are Senior Parliamentary Secretary Shawn Huang, 42, three-term MP Ang Wei Neng, 58, and new faces Hamid Razak, 39, and Cassandra Lee, 33. Hamid is an orthopaedic surgeon while Lee is a lawyer. PSP's first-timers Sumarleki is the head of packaged food and business development at food and beverage firm Del Monte Pacific while Sani is the managing director and legal counsel of a condo management firm. Sign Up Sign Up West Coast-Jurong GRC absorbed estates in the former Jurong West and Taman Jurong, and lost its Harbourfront and Sentosa polling districts. The Taman Jurong ward was previously in Jurong GRC, which is viewed as a PAP stronghold. West Coast GRC, which was the site of the PAP's narrowest win last elections, was renamed West Coast-Jurong West GRC following the latest change to Singapore's electoral divisions. In GE2020, the PAP won the constituency with 51.68 per cent of the votes, compared to the PSP's vote share of 48.32 per cent. PSP, which was the highest vote loser in the elections, picked Leong and Poa to join Parliament under the NCMP scheme. The redrawn constituency, which has 158,836 voters, will be a closely watched battleground when Singaporeans go to the polls on May 3. It has the second largest number of electors, behind Ang Mo Kio GRC's 161,499. PAP to defend Pioneer seat against PSP At the same Nomination Centre in Nan Hua High School, labour unionist Patrick Tay, 53, filed his candidacy to defend his seat in Pioneer Single Member Constituency (SMC) against first-time candidate Stephanie Tan, 37, from the PSP. Tay, who is the assistant secretary-general of the National Trades Union Congress, won the seat five years ago against PSP candidate Lim Cher Hong and independent candidate Cheang Peng Wah. Tan, a homemaker and mother of two, is a law graduate from the National University of Singapore. The Raffles' Girls Secondary School and Raffles Junior College alumni had stints as an assistant director in the legal policy division of the Ministry of Law, and legal counsel to the Ministry of Defence.
