A Look Into Katie Ledecky's 800 Free Dominance; Will It Be Challenged At Singapore?

NANTERRE, FRANCE - JULY 31: Katie Ledecky of Team United States celebrates after winning gold in the ... More Women's 1500m Freestyle Final on day five of the Olympic Games Paris 2024 at Paris La Defense Arena on July 31, 2024 in Nanterre, France. (Photo by) In Fukuoka, Japan, Katie Ledecky surpassed Michael Phelps. Winning the 800 free race, she claimed her 16th gold medal to hold the most individual world titles in swimming history. Now, in 2025, fans may witness Katie Ledecky create history at the World Championships once again. The 28-year-old will be aiming to win her seventh consecutive gold medal in the 800 free and become the first swimmer to claim seven world titles in the same event. Ledecky's highly successful history in this event certainly makes her a favourite to win it. She has also constantly posted great times throughout the season so far, including breaking her first long-course world record in seven years in May. A Look Into Katie Ledecky's 800 Free Legacy Just like 1500, 800 free has been one of the biggest strengths of Ledecky. At her debut Olympics, joining as the youngest member of the U.S. team at the age of 15, she claimed the gold in the 800 free with an American record, launching her career with multiple historic outings in the future. The next year, she broke the 800 free record for the first time. Following what seemed to be just one of multiple records set by Ledecky, the swimmer managed to break the record five times between 2013 and 2016. After this, she continued to maintain her consistency in the event, claiming two Olympic gold medals at Tokyo and Paris, respectively. But during all these seven years, the 800 free record remained untouched. Notably, following the Tokyo Olympics, Ledecky made some changes; she left Stanford to train with Anthony Nesty at the University of Florida. Ledecky's momentum showcased a significant resurgence, claiming podium finishes at the World Championships and the Paris Olympics, and surpassing herself yet again, breaking the 800 free record in May 2025. One month later, at the U.S. Nationals, Ledecky qualified for the Singapore World championships, clocking the third-fastest time ever, in 8:05.76 seconds. However, Ledecky's road to maintain 800 free dominance could be challenged by 18-year-old Summer McIntosh at Competitor or potential winner: Summer McIntosh After facing disappointment at the Tokyo Olympics, the world witnessed Summer McIntosh's rapid rise in the fly and individual medley categories. However, apart from these events, in February 2024, McIntosh shocked the world by breaking Ledecky's 13-year-old winning streak by nearly nine seconds. The Canadian swimmer handed defeat to arguably one of the best 800 free swimmers in the world, Ledecky's first final loss in the event since 2010. Following this, the duo was expected to produce one of the greatest showdowns at the Paris Olympics. However, McIntosh decided to skip the event, taking home three Olympic Gold medals in the 200 medley, 200 fly, and 400 medley. Now in Singapore, the 800 free race can be the event that decides what this category would look like at LA 2028. At the 2025 Canadian Trials, McIntosh managed to touch the wall in 8:05.07. Her performance helped her surpass Ledecky's U.S. Nationals time and clock the new third-fastest time behind Ledecky's 8:04.12 world record and the previous world record time set in Rio. With this time, McIntosh also managed to take down her Canadian record set in February by five seconds. Since competing in the free event at the Tokyo Olympics at the age of 14, Summer McIntosh has come a long way. Despite racing the 800 free only a few times since, McIntosh remains the second fastest swimmer in the category and the second swimmer to break the 8:10 sub-barrier after Ledecky. McIntosh, who is going to participate in 800 free for the first time 'on the world level,' thinks 'Katie is in her top form this season and the match up will be awesome' as the duo 'bring the best out of each other.'

French town withdraws pop festival funding over Kneecap appearance

NANTERRE, France: A town that hosts one of France's biggest pop festivals announced Wednesday that it was withdrawing its subsidy to the event because controversial Irish rappers Kneecap had been booked to play. British police are investigating Kneecap's lead singer under a terror offense after he was accused of displaying a Hezbollah flag at a concert last year. The Lebanese militant group is banned in Britain. Police said they are also investigating videos allegedly showing calls for the death of British lawmakers. The Paris suburb of Saint Cloud approved a 40,000 euro ($46,500) subsidy this year for the Rock En Seine festival that last year attracted 180,000 people over four days. The town council said the money had been agreed before the lineup was announced. Kneecap are to appear at the event on August 24. Saint Cloud said its council had now voted to withdraw the subsidy. A statement said the town 'finances, within its means, a cultural and artistic project. On the other hand it does not finance political action, nor demands, and even less calls to violence, such as calls to kill lawmakers, whatever their nationality.' The town said it respects the festival's 'freedom' to decide its lineup and had not sought 'any kind of negotiation with the aim of influencing the program.' Kneecap have been taken off the bill for festivals in Scotland and Germany this year because of the controversy. The group have said they are committed to the Palestinian cause but have denied any terrorism connection. Singer Liam O'Hanna, who appears under the name Mo Chara, has condemned the charges against him as political. O'Hanna is to appear in court again four days before the Rock En Seine show.

French police officer to face trial over teen's killing that ignited 2023 riots

PARIS, June 4 — A French policeman who shot and killed a teenager at point-blank range in 2023 in a Paris suburb, sparking days of riots, is to go on trial charged with murder, a court said Tuesday. The trial of the officer, who has been charged with the murder of Nahel Merzouk, 17, could take place in the second or third quarter of 2026, the court in the Nanterre suburb, where the killing took place, said in a joint statement with investigating magistrates. The announcement coincides with rising tensions in France after attacks against Muslims in recent weeks, as well as the burning of a Quran in the south-east of the country. The officer, identified as Florian M., was released from custody in November 2023 after five months in detention. Mobile phone footage of an officer shooting Nahel inside a car during a traffic stop on a busy street went viral. The scene sparked anger and protests that degenerated into rioting and led to scenes of devastation nationwide. The police initially maintained that Nahel had driven his car at the officer. But this was contradicted by the video, which showed two officers standing at a stationary car, with one pointing a weapon at its driver. 'Nothing shows Florian M. was authorised in the circumstances to use his weapon, in violation of the principles of proportionality and absolute necessity,' according to the written order issued by two investigating magistrates for the trial, which was seen by AFP. 'Law applied' However legal proceedings were dropped against the accused officer's colleague who was present during the incident. He had been investigated as an 'assisted witness', which in the French system is one step before being charged. 'This order for a trial is both disappointing and not surprising,' said Laurent-Franck Lienard, Florian M.'s lawyer, explaining that the investigating judge was always likely to follow the prosecution's push for a trial. The lawyer told AFP he would lodge an appeal against the order. 'We maintain that the shooting was legitimate,' he said. Eric Henry, of the Alliance police union which has vigorously defended the actions of the police officer, told CNews TV the announcement of the trial sent 'a disastrous signal to our colleague, to the police world'. But Frank Berton, a lawyer for Nahel's mother Mounia Merzouk, said he was satisfied with the decision to move to a trial. 'We are just seeing the law being applied,' he said. 'Now all that remains is to convince the court.' The move to try the officer over the death of Nahel, who was of north African origin, comes as new tensions have emerged over racism and security in France. A man who had posted racist videos shot dead his Tunisian neighbour and badly wounded a Turkish man in the south of France at the weekend, and a Malian man was stabbed to death in a mosque in April. 'Racism is not France' Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau, who is taking an increasingly hard line on immigration issues, has faced accusations of not bring firm enough against such crimes and even fuelling a racist climate. But he said on Tuesday that the killing of Tunisian Hichem Miraoui in Puget-sur-Argens was 'clearly a racist crime,' 'probably also anti-Muslim,' and 'perhaps also a terrorist crime.' 'Racism is not France,' Retailleau told the National Assembly. According to Le Parisien newspaper, the suspect in that killing, who is under arrest, said he 'swore allegiance to the French flag' and called on the French to 'shoot' people of foreign origin in one of his videos posted on social media. Anti-terrorism prosecutors have taken over the investigation into the case, the first such racist attack linked to the far right to be dealt with as 'terrorism' since their office was set up in 2019. Meanwhile, a person stole a Quran on the night of Sunday to Monday from a mosque near the southeastern French city of Lyon and set it on fire, religious leaders and a police source said Tuesday. — AFP
