'I snapped up a £12 cabin bag to save me £50 on airport fees'
Ryanair has jacked up the price of larger cabin bags bought after booking - but I kept my money in my pocket by purchasing a compact piece of hand luggage that fits neatly underneath the seat Finding the right size travel bag to carry for free on budget airlines can be almost as difficult as finding cheap flights in the first place. This is even more important in light of new guidelines issued last summer, meaning that Ryanair passengers could be hit with increased charges simply for carrying the wrong size bag. Passengers with bags that are too big to meet the super strict measurements of 40 x 20 x 25 cm would need to be in possession of a Ryanair Priority tickets or have paid extra for larger luggage. Flyers who just turn up with overloaded cabin luggage could otherwise be stung with up to a £50 fee at check in (€/£60). Luckily for me and other Ryanair flyers, some bags have been designed to be the perfect size. Eager to not waste a penny on airport fees, I previously invested in a £12.99 Ryanair cabin bag from Amazon. The Narwey Cabin Bag promises to spare passengers from shelling out on extra luggage fees by simply sliding under the seat in front. Small on the outside, the bag is surprisingly roomy on the inside. For a quick trip away, I managed to shove two pairs of jeans, three T-shirts, one hoodie, a couple of dresses, swimwear, ample socks and underwear, a spare trainers and all my toiletries all for a weekend jaunt. Looking a bit bulky when full, it zipped up nicely and the bag's adjustable straps and zipper colluded to revert it back to its aircraft-friendly shape. On a jaunt to France, I popped the bag under the seat in front of me, leaving ample room for my feet either side. Managing to be somehow both compact and spacious all at the same time, this bag's an all-season champion that is once again set to be carried by savvy travellers this year. If the Narwey bag isn't quite right, Amazon is also selling the Cabin Max Suitcase for Easyjet for £39.95. More than three times the price of my little bag, this suitcase a still a good choice with buyers calling it "ideal for budget airlines." Elsewhere, Dunelm is selling the chic Elements range, with underseat suitcases for £28. Available in a wide range of colours, shoppers can also snap up matching cases in three other sizes. For passengers who would rather stick to a soft sided carry on like mine, Next has the Cabin Max Brown Cabin Max Vela 20L Tote Bag for £40. The perfect pick for trendy travellers, in comes in a choice of designs including leopard print. With more than 8,900 five-star reviews on Amazon, it seems many customers agree with me, finding the little bag to be practical, smart and a bit of a life saver. One buyer said: "Super great for saving on cabin bag fees!", while another agreed saying: " It's great for budget travel." A third person joined in with even more praise, explaining: "I recently purchased the foldable travel duffel bag for Ryanair Airlines from Amazon, and it has proven to be a fantastic addition to my travel gear. The size is perfect for Ryanair's underseat cabin bag requirements, measuring 40x20x25 cm when expanded." However, not all feedback has been positive, with some customers describing the zipper as fragile and the bag a 'bit flimsy'. One disappointed buyer said: "This bag is not very sturdy especially once filled. The material is quite thin and feels easily puncturable. The zip also did not feel very secure and was uneasy using it when flying." From my own use, I've found that it stands up well to the challenges of flying, and its affordable price means you have a bit more to spend on enjoying a drink on the plane.

I tried the £16 viral Ryanair cabin bag that's like a tardis
I tried the £16 viral Ryanair cabin bag that's like a tardis Finding a bag that fits the criteria for Ryanair's hand luggage rules and is not uncomfortable to carry around is no easy task Fran Winston required more clothes than usual for this trip along with a laptop (Image: (Image: Fran Winston) ) As showbiz reporter for the Daily Express, Fran Winston frequently travels between Dublin and London for work, often opting for Ryanair due to its cost-effectiveness. Ryanair allows passengers one piece of hand luggage free of charge, but it must fit into the bag sizer at the airport. The maximum dimensions are 40 x 20 x 25cm, which is smaller than most other budget airlines. And if the carry-on luggage doesn't meet these criteria, passengers may be charged the Priority rate at the airport, which can range from an extra £20 to £60. The reporter has been on a mission to find a bag that fits everything she needs and is comfortable to carry around. She decided to test the Narwey Duffle, a bag she had seen all over social media as one of the original viral Ryanair bags. Express reporter Fran Winston tried the viral Narwey bag (Image: (Image: Fran Winston) ) The bag, usually priced around £16 on Amazon, claims to meet all the specifications and comes in eight different colours, reports the Express. Fran's review I took the Narwey Duffle bag on a weekend trip to London. I had planned a couple of nights out and a work event, so I needed various clothes. I also required toiletries and make-up, as well as my laptop, chargers and a power bank. Article continues below For the review, I assessed how easy it was to fit everything in and whether I had to make any compromises. I placed the fully packed bag in the sizer at the gate and under my seat on the plane. I then carried it around London to various destinations, noting comfort levels and practicality. My immediate thought was that the bag felt surprisingly robust for the price; it's made from a heavyweight fabric with sturdy-looking stitching and zips. The shoulder strap is secured with metal hardware, but the top straps struck me as too short. I could just about get it under my arm unpacked, but I had reservations about what it would be like when full. Size-wize, it looked small and had just one zipped pocket on the outside. Inside, however, there was a reassuring amount of space because it is essentially one large compartment, with a zipped pocket and three net pouches. There's no laptop pouch, security pocket, or anywhere for a water bottle. But the proof would be whether it could securely hold all my stuff. Clothing-wise, I had a couple of T-shirts, two smart-casual tops, a dress, and a pair of heels, plus underwear and pyjamas. To travel, I was in jeans that I'd mix and match with the tops. Plus, I wore my trusty (and bulky) hoodie, which worked well for this trip as it was a chilly morning for my flight. I went light on toiletries and makeup (wipes and makeup palettes are your friends) and put them in a packing cube with my liquids in a clear bag to make it easier at the airport. Fran ran into issues when she tried to close the bag after removing her laptop past security (Image: (Image: Fran Winston) ) Additionally, I packed a small box of accessories, a power bank, my passport, and a travel pillow (since the travel pillow clips onto the bag, I haven't included it in pictures). I also needed my laptop: mine is 15.6', bigger than the average machine, so it usually requires a bit of packing Tetris. I'd purposely chosen tops that could be rolled up small. I had wanted to bring a bulkier dress, but went with a fitted one for space-saving purposes. Usually, I would avoid bringing a second pair of shoes, but I needed these for my night out. I used my packing cubes, but more for organisation, and I also packed my underwear in a separate bag. With all these tricks, the clothes fit in no problem. As predicted, my laptop was a bit of an issue. It wouldn't sit completely flush, so I had to pack it at an angle. This meant I was packing clothes on either side of it, but it served as padding and protection for the laptop, so it worked out well. I did struggle to close the bag. It was precision-packed, and I knew if I took anything out, I would have to repack, as everything had to sit a specific way to ensure it fit. My prediction proved correct once I got past security. After taking my laptop out to work, I could not close the bag again and had to repack it. From superstar gigs to cosy pubs, find out What's On in Wales by signing up to our newsletter here I was very relieved when it fit in the Ryanair sizer. Admittedly, it was tight – I think the smallest extra item would have tipped it into paying-Priority territory. It also just squeezed under my aisle seat, so that was another victory. My big gripe with this one is the handles: with the bag packed, they weren't long enough to put it over my shoulder to carry around, so I had to rely on the longer strap. My hotel wasn't yet ready to check in, and I had to bring it to an appointment with me. It started to drag after a short while, and on busy trains, it didn't win me any friends. I bumped a few people as I jumped on and off, earning me a few cross looks. The Narwey bag held a lot but was a struggle to close and needed precision packing (Image: (Image: Fran Winston) ) Narwey Holdall Final Verdict This bag is akin to the tardis: it appears far larger on the inside than it looks and can hold a surprising amount. The lack of pockets is a drawback as it requires you to pack with precision, but it's suitable for a weekend trip if you're smart with your packing list. Just bear in mind that due to the soft-shell fabric, it's easy to overfill. The length of the top straps was a deal-breaker for me. With a full bag to carry around for a day, the shoulder strap proved too uncomfortable. However, if your journey is more relaxed and you're simply going from a taxi or bus straight to the plane and onto a transfer, this would be perfect. If you're more of a backpack person like myself, I'd suggest the VMIKIV, currently priced at £22 on Amazon. Alternatively, for something slightly larger, the Hayayu expandable bag (starting at £14 on Amazon) purports to meet Ryanair's size restrictions. Yet, it can also be expanded into a larger Easyjet-compatible cabin bag. Keep an eye out for my forthcoming review of that one. Article continues below

This bag meets Ryanair's strict hand luggage rules – and it's just £10
Whether you've found a cheap flight to Barcelona or you're embarking on a weekend sojourn in Italy, if you don't want to get stung by hand luggage restrictions (we've all been there), then finding the right-size carry-on is crucial. Airlines have doubled down on their bag restrictions in recent years – perhaps none more so than Ryanair, which requires bags to measure just 40cm x 20cm x 25cm. Gone are the days when you could freely wheel a small cabin bag on your short-haul flight. Now, you're allowed just one small personal item while travelling (unless you want to cough up cash for extra baggage). Even carrying a water bottle can load you with a fine – see the recent story of a Ryanair passenger who got charged £50 for a cross-body 750ml flask. Enter the Narwey bag. With more than 150 million views on TikTok, the cabin bag goes viral each summer for being a Tardis-like solution to Ryanair's strict rules, with its boxy design also complying with easyJet, Wizz Air, Jet2 and more. Better yet, the luggage will set you back just £10 thanks to Amazon (a fraction of the cost of adding an extra bag to your ticket). If you need further convincing, the Narwey bag comes approved by our travel experts, securing a spot in our review of the best hand luggage bags. Whether you're heading on a sunny city break or a balmy beach holiday, find out how to buy the bag below – plus everything you need to know about Ryanair's hand luggage restrictions. How strict is Ryanair with hand luggage? While easyJet and Wizz also have tricky luggage allowance, Ryanair has a notoriously strict policy. This is mostly down to smaller cabin areas, leaving limited space for excess bags. More often than not, attendants will measure your bag in a frame before boarding to ensure it complies with their dimensions. If you fail to meet the restrictions or bring a second bag, your bag will be tagged and placed in the aircraft hold subject to a fee anywhere between £40-£60. What are the Ryanair hand luggage dimensions? Ryanair allows you to carry on board a small cabin bag measuring 40cm x 20cm x 25cm, which must fit under the seat in front of you. What hand luggage can you take on Ryanair? If you need extra hand baggage allowance, you can buy a priority ticket that lets you carry two cabin bags. This includes a small personal bag (40cm x 20cm x 25cm), which must fit under the seat in front of you and a 10kg bag (55cm x 40cm x 20cm) to be stored in the overhead locker. Dubbed the best budget buy in our review of the best hand luggage bags and being awarded five stars (out of five), Narwey's cabin bag has gone viral on TikTok for good reason. Designed to meet Ryanair's maximum measurements for personal items, our tester said the bag's 'boxy shape means it's impossible to flout them (unlike some other bags, which might risk exceeding restrictions when filled to capacity)', Their favourite features included the extra-long handles (which extend down to the bottom of the bag, for extra security) and the accessible side pocket. 'We also love the way it folds flat when not in use – on occasions when we were travelling with checked baggage, we could simply empty it and shove it in our suitcase after the flight,' they added. An absolute must-have for any adventure you're planning this summer and beyond.
