AAP officials review progress of anti drug campaign in Ludhiana ahead of chief minister meeting
1 2 3 Ludhiana: Senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders spearheading Punjab's anti-drug drive held strategy talks with police and district officials on Saturday, ahead of a key meeting with Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann scheduled for Monday. The session, held at a resort on Ferozepur Road, saw AAP Ludhiana incharge Balbir Chaudhary and 'Nasha Mukti Morcha' zone incharge Sukhjit Singh review local progress under the 'Yudh Nashe Virudh' (War Against Drugs) campaign. Officials said the meeting was aimed at preparing a report for the CM on Ludhiana's enforcement and rehabilitation efforts. Chaudhary briefed attendees on local de-addiction and awareness initiatives, stressing continuous outreach to Punjab's youth. Singh claimed growing public engagement with the anti-drug movement, but urged stronger collaboration between civil society and law enforcement to deepen impact. "Coordination across the administration, police, and grassroots activists is key," Singh said, noting that Monday's meeting with Mann will evaluate government scheme effectiveness, propose de-addiction centre expansions, and discuss bolstering local policing capabilities. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Gentle Japanese hair growth method for men and women's scalp Hair's Rich Learn More Undo The 'Yudh Nashe Virudh' campaign, launched by the Mann government shortly after AAP's 2022 electoral victory in Punjab, aims to tackle the state's long-standing drug problem through a mix of law enforcement, rehabilitation, and awareness. The 'Nasha Mukti Morcha' (Drug-Free Front), AAP's volunteer wing in the campaign, has been organising rallies, community outreach events, and facilitating rehab referrals across districts. Punjab has struggled with drug abuse for more than a decade, particularly in border areas where narcotics smuggling from across the Pakistan border remains a major challenge. In recent years, synthetic drugs and injectable opioids have worsened the crisis, prompting calls for a multi-pronged response. The AAP government has vowed to make anti-drug action a top priority. Its critics, however, argue that while raids and arrests have increased, structural issues such as underfunded rehab centres and weak inter-agency coordination persist. Monday's CM-level review is expected to address many of these concerns and plot the next stage of the campaign. CM Mann to flag off bullock cart race at mega Ludhiana event
Chief minister Bhagwant Singh Mann will formally relaunch traditional bullock cart races in the state on Tuesday. The grand event will be held at the football stadium in Mehma Singh Wala village, located in the Gill constituency of Ludhiana. This will mark the beginning of a new era for one of Punjab's oldest sporting traditions, once a staple of rural life and fairs across the state. Chief minister Bhagwant Singh Mann will formally relaunch traditional bullock cart races in the state on Tuesday. The grand event will be held at the football stadium in Mehma Singh Wala village, located in the Gill constituency of Ludhiana. (HT File) The much-anticipated event follows the passage of the Punjab Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Punjab Amendment) Act and the Punjab Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Conduct of Bullock Cart Race) Rules, 2025. These legislative changes have cleared the legal hurdles that had halted bullock cart races for years. On Monday, MLA Jiwan Singh Sangowal and Baltej Pannu, chief spokesperson of the Nasha Mukti Morcha, visited the venue to review preparations. They described the upcoming event as a celebration of Punjab's cultural roots and expressed gratitude to chief minister Bhagwant Singh Mann for restoring the pride of traditional rural sports. 'This is a historic moment for Punjab. The CM has not only revived a cherished tradition but also shown his connection with the people and culture of the state,' said Pannu, adding that Mann will also hold an interaction with participants and enthusiasts of bullock cart racing during the event. The district administration, under the supervision of senior officials, is leaving no stone unturned to ensure smooth conduct of the event. Thousands are expected to attend the event, which will feature races, traditional performances, and cultural displays. The Punjab Vidhan Sabha had passed the amendment bill earlier this year, after which President Droupadi Murmu gave her assent on February 27. With this, Punjab joined a select list of states that have legislated for the revival of such traditional sports under regulated conditions. With the return of bullock cart racing, the state aims to strike a balance between tradition and regulation, giving rural youth an opportunity to reconnect with their roots while ensuring animal welfare norms are strictly followed.

Punjab: 4 more die in Majitha hooch tragedy; toll now 27
1 2 Amritsar: The Majitha spurious liquor tragedy toll rose to 27 on Thursday, with four more victims — Chanan Singh (42), Dilbag Singh (64), Sarwan Singh (47) and Rajesh (45) — breathing their last. While Chanan and Dilbag are from Bhangwan village, Sarwan is from Bhangali Kalan village and Rajesh from Galowali Kullian. A source said six more people who had accidentally consumed spurious liquor made from methanol, or methyl alcohol, on Tuesday are undergoing treatment in hospital. The news of the four deaths came on a day when Punjab minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal distributed cheques of Rs 10 lakh each to the families of 22 people who have died in the tragedy. Dhaliwal added the govt was providing free medical treatment to those hospitalised and would grant them financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh each. The tragedy has affected eight villages falling close to Majitha town in Amritsar district. In all, five people from Marari Kalan village have died in the tragedy, two from Patalpuri, three from Threawal, seven from Bhangali Kalan, one from Talwandi Khumma, two from Karnala, six from Bhangwan, and one from Galowali Kullian. Most of the victims were daily-wage labourers or small-scale workers. Amritsar senior superintendent of police (rural) said they had registered a case against 18 persons, of which 16 had been arrested, including the kingpin of the hooch racket. Sources said illicit liquor manufacturers used to purchase methanol by claiming that they needed to make paint material and soap, but they would eventually make spurious liquor. The minister assured justice and action against all culprits responsible for the tragedy. "No amount of money can compensate for the loss of a family's breadwinner, but it is the govt's responsibility to do whatever is possible to support the surviving members. We will take strict action against all those involved, including confiscation of their properties," he said. Even as the deaths took place due to consumption of spurious liquor, state govt initiative Nasha Mukti Morcha's Majha coordinator Sonia Mann held a meeting on Thursday and announced anti-drug awareness marches in the districts of Majha region from May 16. "These marches will cover every village and city over the next 50 days," she said.
