How MP police anti-drugs campaign earned pride of place in world record books

A Madhya Pradesh police drive against substance abuse and addiction has notched unprecedented success and a place in the World Book of Records. State director general of police Kailash Makwana will be in the British parliament on September 13 for a special felicitation ceremony for the London-based World Book of Records recognised the anti-addiction drive 'Nashe Se Doori Hai Zaroori', organised from July 15 to July 30, for its scale of engagement with people and impact. The campaign directly reached an estimated 2.3 million people besides millions through social media World Book of Records has already organised a felicitation event at the Madhya Pradesh police headquarters in Bhopal, where the certificate was presented to Makwana. Top police officials, such as K.P. Venkateshwara Rao, additional director general (narcotics), were 'Nashe Se Doori Hai Zaroori' programme was conceptualised by the Madhya Pradesh police and run through all field units, including the 1,700-odd police stations across 57 districts of the state. The police also roped in influencers for anti-addiction messaging to the people. The Indore police commissionerate was the most proactive, organising massive human chains and oath-taking activity during the fortnight. The campaign, also involving the education, social welfare and health departments, was focused on narcotics. MP is one of the few states allowing licenced cultivation of opium in the western districts of Mandsaur, Neemuch, Ratlam and Shajapur. The opium is used by the pharma there have been reports of illegal opium cultivation as well. Of late, incidents have emerged of the manufacturing and supply of party drugs such as MDMA (3, 4-methylenedioxy-methamphetamine), popularly known as ecstasy. Last October, Gujarat sleuths busted a factory producing MDMA in an industrial area on the outskirts of Bhopal. And just last week, MDMA was found on one of the three men arrested in the arrest of the suspect and his family members coincided with the anti-addiction campaign. The administration deployed bulldozers to dismantle properties owned by the business to National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data for 2022, Madhya Pradesh, with 4,811 cases, ranked seventh in the country for cases registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Bhopal: As part of the ongoing anti-drug awareness drive "Nashe Se Doori Hai Zaroori", a signature campaign was held at a hotel in Kamla Nagar on Wednesday, drawing support from noted actor Anupam Kher . The campaign aims to build strong community resistance against drug abuse and promote a healthier lifestyle, especially among the youth. Kher signed the pledge and commended the MP Police for spearheading what he called a vital public initiative against drug abuse. People present were asked to sign in support of the campaign, and were administered a pledge to stay away from drugs.

Director General of Police (DGP) Kailash Makwana, sharing this information, said that the primary goal of the campaign is to protect the youth of Madhya Pradesh from falling into drug addiction. The DGP emphasised the destructive nature of drugs, stating: "The word drugs immediately brings to mind disturbing images — frail bodies, intoxicated eyes, clouds of smoke, and darkness. Addiction to narcotics is hollowing out the lives of many youth and devastating their families." He further said that top political leadership at both the national and state level is deeply concerned about this issue and is actively working towards solutions. "It is our moral responsibility to educate people, especially adolescents and young ones, about the harmful effects of substance abuse and keep them away from drugs," he said. The initiative is being spearheaded by the Narcotics Wing of the State Police Headquarters. Additional Director General of Police (Narcotics), KP Venkateshwara Rao, elaborated that the campaign is focused on raising awareness about the harmful effects of drug use, particularly among teenagers and young adults. It also aims to provide guidance, counselling, and rehabilitation support to those already affected by addiction. With their support, the message will be spread to every section of society, emphasising that drug abuse not only affects individuals but also has a deep impact on the community as a whole. The campaign will be conducted through schools, colleges, public places, and digital platforms to ensure widespread public engagement and awareness.

Bhopal: As part of the 15-day special campaign titled 'Nashe Se Doori Hai Zaroori' (Distance from Drugs is Necessary), a public awareness rally was organised on Tuesday evening from the Commissioner's Office auditorium. The rally was flagged off by Police Commissioner Harinarayanchari Mishra, MLA Bhagwandas Sabnani, Additional Police Commissioners Pankaj Srivastava and Awadhesh Goswami, and DCP Shraddha Tiwari. Before the rally commenced, Commissioner Mishra administered an oath to all attendees, pledging to stay away from drugs and encourage others to do the same. A large number of participants, including all DCPs, ADCPs, ACPs, school students, members of Nagar Raksha Samiti, Shakti Samiti, Srijan's children, prominent citizens, and police personnel, were present for the rally. The primary aim of this campaign is to spread awareness about the ill effects of substance abuse and to encourage a drug-free society. The rally began at the Police Commissioner's Office, passed through Raj Bhavan Trisection and Roshanpura Square, and concluded back at Raj Bhavan Trisection. Participants were educated about the dangers of drug abuse and took a pledge to spread the message within their families and communities. As part of the 15-day awareness initiative, special events will be held in all police station areas to educate citizens about the harmful consequences of drug addiction. These programmes aim to deter youth from falling into addiction, counsel those already affected, and deliver a strong anti-drug message to society. Activities will include public dialogues, distribution of pamphlets, video presentations, and poster exhibitions at educational institutions, urban settlements, and public spaces. The campaign will ensure the active participation of police officers, schoolchildren, civil society organisations, and concerned citizens throughout its duration.
