Tomato wholesale prices up 28% amid supply drop
Nashik: Tomato prices in Maharashtra's largest wholesale markets, including Pimpalgaon and Nashik Agricultural Produce Market Committees (APMCs), surged by 28% on Monday.
The average wholesale price for tomatoes hit Rs45 per kg, a significant jump from Rs35 per kg recorded on Saturday — the last market day of the previous week.

These key markets are crucial suppliers of tomatoes to Gujarat, Mumbai, Thane, other parts of Maharashtra, and even some areas of Uttar Pradesh.
This latest spike contributes to a 150% increase in the average wholesale tomato price over the past 10 days. On July 18, the price stood at Rs18 per kilogram. This sharp increase is primarily attributed to a notable drop in supply failing to meet existing demand.
The arrival of tomatoes in Nashik APMCs declined from over 10,500 crates a day around two weeks ago to around 6,500 crates per day on Monday.
One crate contains 20 kg of tomatoes.
In the retail markets of Nashik city, the price has doubled in the last 10 days from Rs 25 per kg to Rs 50 per kg. The price is now expected to increase to the range of Rs 60 and Rs 65 per kg in the next couple of days.
According to the farmers, some of their produce got damaged due to heavy rainfall in the last two months. The traders, however, said the upward trend is likely to continue for another fortnight or more until the new produce reaches the markets.
When contacted, Rajendra Khare, an official from Nashik APMC overseeing the tomato section, said the rainfall damaged tomato crops, causing a drop in the arrivals of the produce.
"The arrival of tomatoes has dropped by around 40% in the last fortnight," he added.
Deepak Gavli, an official from Pimpalgaon APMC, who looks after the tomato section, said the price trend will be upward for the next 15 days. "The prices will drop to some extent by mid-August after the new crops start arriving at the market," he added.
