TMC announces candidate for Kaliganj assembly constituency bypoll
Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], May 27 (ANI): The All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) announced Alifa Ahmed as their candidate from the Kaliganj assembly constituency ahead of the bypoll, which is set to take place on June 19. The Kaliganj assembly constituency was declared vacant following the death of TMC MLA Nasiruddin Ahamed. TMC shared a post on their official 'X' handle and informed about the development. 'AITC, under the inspiration and guidance of Chairperson Mamata Banerjee, we are pleased to announce the candidate for the upcoming West Bengal Legislative Assembly By-election scheduled for 19th June, 2025', the 'X' post read. On May 25, the Election Commission of India announced dates for by-elections on five assembly constituencies across four states. These include Gujarat's Kadi and Visavadar, Kerala's Nilambur, Punjab's Ludhiana West and West Bengal's Kaliganj. Bye-election will be held in Gujarat's constituencies Kadi and Visavadar to fill the posts of Karsanbhai Punjabhai Solanki who passed away in February this year and the resignation of Bhayani Bhupendrabhai Gandubhai. In Kerala, the bye-election will be held in Nilambur to fill the post of PV Anvar, an LDF-backed MLA who resigned in January this year. He was appointed convenor of the Kerala unit of the Trinamool Congress (TMC). In Punjab, the bye-election will be held in Ludhiana West to fill the post of Gurpreet Bassi Gogi after his demise their January. Meanwhile, the Kaliganj assembly seat by-election is very important for the incumbent TMC state government due to the developments that have taken place in West Bengal in the previous few months. The TMC government was under the radar due to various issues, especially due to the violence that erupted due to the Waqf Amendment Act in Murshidabad. Following the violence in Murshidabad, the Calcutta High Court had set up a fact-finding committee to investigate the incident. The fact-finding committee set up by Calcutta High Court submitted its report on the Violence that occurred in West Bengal's Murshidabad, highlighting that as many as 113 houses were affected badly in the village of Betbona during the violence. It stated that the majority of residents had taken shelter in Malda but all of them have been forced to return by the police administration in Betbona village. The report said, 'Attacks were directed by a local councillor,' adding that Local Police was completely 'inactive and absent'. It further said that the people want permanent BSF camps and Central Armed Forces for their own protection. 'The West Bengal Police did not respond. The villager of Betbona called at 4 p.m. on Friday and 4p.m. on Saturday but police did not pick up the call,' the reports added. 'A man came back to the village and saw which houses were not attacked and then the miscreants came and set fire to those houses,' the report further added. 'A man came back to the village and saw which houses were not attacked and then the miscreants came and set fire to those houses,' the report further added. The report referring to the murder of Haragovinda Das (74) and his son Chandan Das (40), the report states, 'They broke down the main door of the house and took her son (Chandan Das) and took her husband [Haragovinda Das] and hit them with an axe in the back. A man was waiting there until they died.' (ANI)

Bypolls for Kaliaganj, 4 other assembly seats on June 19
1 2 Kolkata/Krishnanagar: In a notification on Sunday, EC announced bypolls for Kaliaganj and four other assembly seats on June 19. Nominations will be accepted until June 2, scrutiny will be held on June 3, and the last date for withdrawal is June 5. Results will be declared on June 23. The seat became vacant following the death of Trinamool MLA Nasiruddin Ahamed (70) in Feb 2024. Known as Lal da, he had served multiple terms, winning in 2011 and 2021 with a gap in 2016. After a recent revision of electoral rolls, the constituency has 2.5 lakh voters — 1.3 lakh male, 1.2 lakh female and four transgender. EC's sanitisation of voter lists resulted in a slight reduction compared to Jan's revision. BJP MP Jagannath Sarkar had earlier requested postponement of the bypoll citing Operation Sindoor, and suggested that it be held along with the assembly polls in 2026. EC, however, proceeded with scheduling bypolls in Kaliaganj, Khandi and Visavadar in Gujarat, Neelambur in Kerala and Ludhiana West in Punjab. An EC official confirmed that central forces would be deployed and all 309 booths in Kaliaganj would have CCTV coverage. The bypoll here represents a significant contest between Trinamool and BJP ahead of the state elections. The governing party has won recent bypolls, except in Sagardighi where Bayron Biswas won as a Congress candidate before joining Trinamool. EC is yet to announce a bypoll for Tehatta constituency, which became vacant after the death of Trinamool MLA Tapas Saha, who represented Palashipara in 2016, on May 15. Additionally, a bypoll cannot be held for the Basirhat parliamentary seat — whose MP, Trinamool's Hazi Nurul, died in Sept — due to a pending court case.

Amidst concerns around voter discrepancies, EC publishes ‘revised' electoral roll for Bengal's bypoll-bound Kaliganj
The final electoral list of the Kaliganj Assembly Constituency in West Bengal's Nadia district features a correction and net decrease of over 2,000 voters following a special summary revision by the Electoral Registration Officer, ahead of byelections in the constituency. A special summary revision was conducted by the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) after an integrated draft electoral roll was published on April 8. The period between April 8 and April 24 was designated for filing claims and objections. The final electoral list featuring a total of 2,52,670 electors was published on May 5. It recorded a net decrease of 2,208 electors from the initial list of 2,54,878 voters. Also read | Escalating 'fake voters' charge, Trinamool Ministers hit the streets to scrutinize electoral rolls This purportedly follows the deletion of names, recording changes in electors' residence, inclusion of new and overseas voters, correction of particulars, replacement of Electors Photo Identity Cards (EPIC), and marking of persons with disabilities during the special summary revision. The correction of over 2,000 names assumes significance in the wake of the State ruling party's concerns around duplicate EPIC numbers earlier this year, and allegations of several voters in West Bengal sharing the same EPIC number with electors from other States. At a party meeting in February this year, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had claimed that the electoral rolls in West Bengal feature a large number of 'fake voters' from other States like Gujarat and Haryana, and accused the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of enabling such discrepancies. She had also instructed Trinamool Congress leaders and workers to inspect the electoral rolls in the State and flag discrepancies. A Trinamool core committee was tasked with verifying the State's electoral rolls. 'After house-to-house field survey by 309 Booth Level Officers (BLOs), draft Electoral Rolls were published on 08/04/2025 by Electoral Registration Officer for inviting claims and objections. All Political Parties together appointed 660 number of Booth Level Agents (BLAs) for verifying the draft electoral rolls. After addressing all claims and objections, the final electoral rolls were published by ERO on 05/05/2025 and a copy was handed to all political parties,' the CEO said in a statement on May 7, after the publication of the final electoral list of the Kaliganj Assembly constituency. Two byelections in West Bengal are due — in the Kaliganj Assembly constituency and the Basirhat Parliamentary constituency — following the deaths of Trinamool MLA Nasiruddin Ahamed in February this year and Trinamool MP Haji Sheikh Nurul Islam in September last year, respectively.
