Amidst concerns around voter discrepancies, EC publishes ‘revised' electoral roll for Bengal's bypoll-bound Kaliganj
The final electoral list of the Kaliganj Assembly Constituency in West Bengal's Nadia district features a correction and net decrease of over 2,000 voters following a special summary revision by the Electoral Registration Officer, ahead of byelections in the constituency.
A special summary revision was conducted by the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) after an integrated draft electoral roll was published on April 8. The period between April 8 and April 24 was designated for filing claims and objections.
The final electoral list featuring a total of 2,52,670 electors was published on May 5. It recorded a net decrease of 2,208 electors from the initial list of 2,54,878 voters.

This purportedly follows the deletion of names, recording changes in electors' residence, inclusion of new and overseas voters, correction of particulars, replacement of Electors Photo Identity Cards (EPIC), and marking of persons with disabilities during the special summary revision.
The correction of over 2,000 names assumes significance in the wake of the State ruling party's concerns around duplicate EPIC numbers earlier this year, and allegations of several voters in West Bengal sharing the same EPIC number with electors from other States.
At a party meeting in February this year, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had claimed that the electoral rolls in West Bengal feature a large number of 'fake voters' from other States like Gujarat and Haryana, and accused the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of enabling such discrepancies.
She had also instructed Trinamool Congress leaders and workers to inspect the electoral rolls in the State and flag discrepancies. A Trinamool core committee was tasked with verifying the State's electoral rolls.
'After house-to-house field survey by 309 Booth Level Officers (BLOs), draft Electoral Rolls were published on 08/04/2025 by Electoral Registration Officer for inviting claims and objections. All Political Parties together appointed 660 number of Booth Level Agents (BLAs) for verifying the draft electoral rolls. After addressing all claims and objections, the final electoral rolls were published by ERO on 05/05/2025 and a copy was handed to all political parties,' the CEO said in a statement on May 7, after the publication of the final electoral list of the Kaliganj Assembly constituency.
Two byelections in West Bengal are due — in the Kaliganj Assembly constituency and the Basirhat Parliamentary constituency — following the deaths of Trinamool MLA Nasiruddin Ahamed in February this year and Trinamool MP Haji Sheikh Nurul Islam in September last year, respectively.

The resolution will not reference 'Operation Sindoor', sources said. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is expected to participate in the discussion when the resolution is brought to the House on Tuesday. The CM was scheduled to visit New Delhi on Monday, but according to state administration sources her plan has been deferred. 'This House expresses its profound sense of shock and anguish at the barbaric and inhumane attack perpetrated on innocent tourists in the Baisaran valley of Jammu and Kashmir on the April 22, 2025, which resulted in the tragic loss of 26 innocent lives, including three from West Bengal,' the resolution states. The Trinamool Congress (TMC), in the upcoming monsoon session, will move motions on drinking water issues and Ganges river erosion in Malda and Murshidabad districts. The state government is also likely to bring an Other Backward Class (OBC) reservation Amendment bill, proposing to add 76 new castes to the OBC list. The state Cabinet, last Monday, approved adding 76 new castes to the OBC list, bringing the total to 140 ethnic groups, based on recommendations from the West Bengal Commission for Backward Classes, an official said. Additionally, Farakka in Murshidabad district will be upgraded to a subdivision. Meanwhile, the BJP plans to introduce a motion on the Murshidabad riots.

State plans a multi-hall auditorium at Hwh Maidan
1 2 Kolkata/Howrah: The state plans to build a new auditorium adjacent to Sarat Sadan at Howrah Maidan, featuring a 500-seat main hall, a 200-seat cinema theatre, a conference facility and basement parking. Officials are also considering including a cafeteria for visitors. State food processing and horticulture minister Arup Roy, who is also the Central Howrah MLA, an extensive beautification plan for Howrah Maidan and the riverfront was underway. He said a watch tower was also being planned. "The river from Howrah and parts of it on the Kolkata side can also be viewed from the watch tower," he said, adding they also wanted to revamp the open-air theatre beside Sarat Sadan. An official pointed out that the open space available at Howrah Maidan was suitable for the new auditorium, aimed at facilitating public gatherings and events. The venue would serve multiple purposes, including performances, meetings and exhibitions, contributing to Howrah's cultural development, he added. Meetings have been held on the proposed auditorium's design and the revamp of the surrounding area. Chief minister Mamata Banerjee, following the metro extension to Howrah Maidan, had asked for the development of the area, following which work began with a decorated triangular island near the metro station. After one of her visits to Sarat Sadan for a meeting, Banerjee had stressed the upgrade of the area, which had set the ball rolling for the transformation. Sujoy Chakravorty, Howrah municipal corporation chairperson, however, said it was too premature to discuss the project details. Sarat Sadan now houses one hall with 944 seats, a second one with 200 seats, a seminar hall that can accommodate 55 people, an exhibition space and another hall in the basement. The complex also has a planetarium, offering three daily shows. The adjacent Sailen Manna stadium regularly hosts football matches. Trinamool MLA says Operation Sindoor was ‘politicised drama', BJP seeks probe
A political row has erupted in West Bengal after Trinamoool Congress MLA Narendranath Chakraborty described 'Operation Sindoor' as a 'pre-planned drama' and 'a game in the name of war.' The MLA from Pandaveswar Assembly constituency in Paschim Bardhaman district said that those politicising 'Operation Sindoor' will face resistance and will end up in the dustbin. ' It (Operation Sindoor) is a well-planned drama. A game in the name of war was going on. The entire thing is 'fitting' (setting/arrangement) with Pakistan,' the MLA is heard saying in a viral video. Mr. Chakraborty also sought to know 'why the terrorists responsible for the Pahalgam massacre on April 22 have not been arrested yet.' The MLA was speaking in Paschim Bardhaman district at an event where Trinamool Congress leaders, including MP Kirti Azad, and party supporters were present. In the video, Mr. Chakraborty says that tourist spots in Kashmir are heavily guarded, so how was the terror attack possible? The remarks evoked sharp reactions. Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari said that the Trinamool MLA's statement demands scrutiny and he should be grilled. 'If an elected representative like Chakraborty has prior knowledge or insights into such a heinous act, it is imperative that the NIA take him into custody for questioning to uncover the source and credibility of his information,' the BJP leader pointed out. TMC distances itself The Trinamool Congress leadership distanced itself from the remarks. Senior leader Kunal Ghosh said that Mr. Chakraborty's views do not reflect the party line on the issue. BJP State president Sukanta Majumdar also criticised the Trinamool MLAs' remark. He shared a video of the MLA making the remark on social media. 'This statement is not just objectionable — it is blatantly anti-national. Sadly, he is not the first. Several other TMC leaders, including the failed Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee herself, have made indecent and disgraceful remarks about Operation Sindoor,' Mr. Majumdar said. Last week Union Home Minister Amit Shah, during a public meeting in Kolkata, accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of opposing Operation Sindoor to 'appease the Muslim vote bank.' The Trinamool Congress responded, saying that the Union Home Minister's remarks were 'factually incorrect and politically motivated.' Ms. Banerjee had expressed full support for India's response to the Pahalgam terror attack, stating that she stood 'shoulder-to-shoulder' in the fight against terrorism.
