Family affair: Chalobah brothers set to join exclusive England group

Trevoh Chalobah is hoping to make his England debut this evening when the Three Lions take on Andorra in World Cup qualification. Chalobah has been called up to the senior side for the first time, following an impressive season with Crystal Palace and Chelsea. The defender helped Chelsea to Europa Conference League success last season and is now pushing for an international debut. Should he feature, the Chalobah family will become just the third to have two brothers play for England since the Second World War. A total of 21 brothers have represented England, but just two post-war. Advertisement Jack and Bobby Charlton each featured as part of England's 1966 World Cup winning team. Centre-back Jack won 35 caps for the Three Lions, scoring six times. His younger brother, Bobby, won the Ballon d'Or after England's World Cup success. He retired with the then records as England's most capped player and highest goalscorer, having scored 49 times in 106 games for England. The second set of brothers to feature for England post-war are Phil and Gary Neville. Combined, the defensive duo won 144 caps for England. Chalobah will be hoping his international career lasts longer than elder brother Nathaniel, who featured for just six minutes on his sole appearance for England in 2018. Trevoh Chalobah: From ‘bomb squad' reject to cusp of England history

Nathaniel Chalobah's advice to his younger brother Trevoh after receiving his first England call-up was simple: 'Just enjoy it.' His selection bookends a remarkable campaign for the defender — one that began on the sidelines at Chelsea, unwanted and up for sale, and took him to Crystal Palace before an unexpected recall by his parent club, and which now ends with him as a trophy winner, with the possibility of a first, and much merited, England cap. Should the 25-year-old take the field against Andorra on Saturday or Senegal three days later, then the Chalobahs would become only the third family to have siblings represent the England national team since the Second World War, alongside the Nevilles, Phil and Gary, and the Charltons, Jack and Bobby. For Trevoh, his elder brother Nathaniel — five years his senior — was always his big influence. It was seeing his sibling scouted by Fulham and then taking his passion into a professional environment at Chelsea that persuaded him to take up the sport himself. 'He gave me that confidence and motivation to say: 'If my brother can do it, I can try too,' ' Trevoh has previously said. 'Not every young footballer has someone to look up to and for me, that was my brother. We still talk about our games to this day.' Both made the breakthrough at Chelsea and their paths have been divergent. Nathaniel, capped once by England in 2018, now plays for Sheffield Wednesday but Trevoh, who joined Chelsea aged eight, is holding the fort at Stamford Bridge — just. Last summer, he was surprised to learn that the club wanted to move him on, less than two years after signing a new five-year deal. He was excluded from the club's five-game pre-season tour to the United States and left to train with the 'bomb squad', a group of undesirables whose futures, they were told, lay elsewhere. As part of that, Chalobah was not able to use some first-team facilities. Enzo Maresca, the club's head coach who was appointed last June, said at the time that it was a 'sad' but 'collective' decision to leave him behind. Like Conor Gallagher, who left Chelsea for Atletico Madrid last summer, Chalobah was a homegrown talent, and therefore if he were to be sold, he could be booked as 'pure profit' on the club accounts. No permanent home was found, however, so he joined Palace on loan, where he was reunited with Marc Guéhi, his central defensive partner from the Chelsea academy, where they won the FA Youth Cup twice, as well as the Uefa Youth League in 2016. It was a perfect fit and, after overcoming an early-season abdominal injury, Chalobah began to cement his place in Oliver Glasner's team. But then Chelsea picked up the phone, cap in hand. Injuries to Benoît Badiashile and Wesley Fofana left Maresca without a preferred right-sided central defender and so the club asked if he would come back and triggered an option to recall him. His familiarity with the club and group, reflected in how he stepped into the dressing-room when Chelsea visited Selhurst Park in late December to greet his former team-mates, made his return the obvious choice for Chelsea, sheepish or otherwise. He would miss Palace's historic FA Cup success and did not feature for them in the competition as Chelsea, who were considering a recall at the time, did not provide permission for him to play in the third round against Stockport County, which is required under FA rules. The returning Chalobah did not quibble about the prospect of fewer minutes and his performances underlined how he held no grudges about what had happened in the summer. He was a man-of-the-match performer in his first game back, at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers, and would go on to play regularly for the rest of the season, missing only four league games and helping Chelsea to qualify for the Champions League. By the end of the campaign, he was starting in preference to team-mates that he was brought in to cover. 'Trevoh, since he's back with us in January, he's doing very, very well,' Maresca said. 'He's playing, he's helping us, he's defending when he needs to defend. He's also building from the back when we need him so he's able to do that and we are very happy with Trevoh.' Last week, he started in the Europa Conference League final against Real Betis as Chelsea won their first trophy in two years. And now his reward is an England call. 'Trevoh deserves it, it's as simple as that,' said Thomas Tuchel, the England head coach, who added that he feels Chalobah is ahead of 64-cap Harry Maguire in the pecking order. 'He played a fantastic second half of the season with Chelsea. He is very very consistent on a very high level.' Tuchel has long been a big influence for Chalobah. The German coach handed him his debut for Chelsea, in the Super Cup final against Villarreal in 2021, which was swiftly followed by a goalscoring Premier League appearance, against Palace. Chalobah spoke this year of how Tuchel had inspired confidence in him. 'It's nice when a manager trusts in you. He was always talking to me in training, managing me as a young player, [explaining] the importance of keeping your head right and keeping focus, taking it step by step.' If Trevoh plays in the upcoming matches, the Chalobahs would become only the third family to have siblings represent the England national team since the Second World War THE FA After a remarkable year, and despite having won favour again at Chelsea, Chalobah's future remains uncertain. When he returned to Stamford Bridge, it was under the expectation that he may leave the club permanently this summer. It is not clear whether that position has changed. Chelsea are known to be assessing options in central defence, although the position is not regarded as a priority. Their pursuit of Dean Huijsen, who joined Real Madrid from Bournemouth, was one borne out of opportunism. For now, then, Chalobah is best to heed the advice of his brother, and enjoy the moment. After such an unusual and disruptive year, England recognition is a fitting reward. Trevoh Chalobah set to join Gary Neville in exclusive club if Chelsea star makes England debut in Andorra clash

TREVOH CHALOBAH is determined to make an impression following his first international call-up. The Chelsea centre-back is hoping to make his England debut against Andorra on Saturday after being named in the squad last month by Thomas Tuchel. 4 4 If he plays at the weekend, or against Senegal in Nottingham on Tuesday, he will join Jack and Bobby Charlton and Phil and Gary Neville as brothers who have played for England. Chalobah 's sibling, Nathaniel, has one senior cap, against Spain in 2018. And the Chelsea ace is hoping to follow in his footsteps. He said: "My older brother has been through the ranks as well and he was over the moon when I got the call up. Hopefully I can keep myself in the team and doing well. "To get the call-up is amazing. It was one of my goals since playing through the ranks, from Under-16 to Under-21. It's a dream to play in the first team. "To be back here with him (Tuchel), having been with him at Chelsea, and knowing who he is and how he works, is good." Chalobah knew he could make it to the very top after marking Neymar out of a game in a victory over Paris St-Germain. The defender helped Lorient to a shock 3-2 win over the Ligue 1 giants during his loan spell at the club in 2021. 4 He said: "It was very hard in France at first but it was a reason I went out to play against teams like PSG other than play on loan in the Championship. "I was marking Neymar. He was as a no 10. I was in central midfield. It was very good. Playing against Neymar. Mbappe, those type of players, helped me. "I knew I could play against the highest level and that is the main reason I went out there. "For me. I knew what the goal was." Chalobah had loan spells at Ipswich and Huddersfield before joining Lorient. He spent the first half of this season at Crystal Palace but excelled when returning for Enzo Maresca and has now made 99 appearances for Chelsea. Asked about Tuchel, he said: "He's a very tough manager. That's what us players need going into a World Cup next year. It's a very good approach. "He wants to win. You've seen that at Chelsea. He's a winner and he wants to bring that same winning culture here."

Trevoh Chalobah hoping his England career lasts longer than brother Nathaniel's

Trevoh Chalobah is hoping to follow in his brother Nathaniel's footsteps by winning his first England cap this week but hopes his international career lasts longer. The Chelsea defender has received his maiden call-up for Thomas Tuchel's squad for forthcoming games against Andorra and Senegal following a successful season. He will be hoping to get on the pitch in the World Cup qualifier against the minnows in Barcelona on Saturday or the City Ground friendly against the African side three days later. His sibling Nathaniel, who currently plays for Sheffield Wednesday, won his one and only England cap in a Nations League win over Spain in 2018, appearing for six minutes and 54 seconds as a late substitute. And Trevoh is hoping that this is just the start for him. The 25-year-old said: 'When I found out I phoned my dad, spoke to my family, let them know, and they were over the moon for me also. And my older brother as well, Nathaniel. He was happy for me also. 'Obviously, him being here also, and to see his younger brother do the same, it was a very proud moment for him. And hopefully I can be here even more. 'It's been a journey for my parents. Obviously, they've seen the highs and lows, and they've been there every single step of the way. It's a good moment for them to share.' Chalobah is one of five Chelsea players in the squad and he knows boss Tuchel well as the German handed him his Stamford Bridge debut. It has been an impressive season for Chalobah as he starred on loan at Crystal Palace before returning to Chelsea to help the Blues to Conference League glory and Champions League qualification, with a trip to the United States for the Club World Cup still to come. He added: 'Individually for me, it's been a very good season. This has been one of my goals, and it's good to share with the Chelsea players. 'It just shows the quality that Chelsea produce and the players, it's good to be here with them also and share that moment. 'They've obviously eased me in here and helped me. As I said, it just shows the quality and the players Chelsea are producing this over the years, it's been amazing. 'I'm here, being called up to England, and it's going to keep carrying on hopefully.' While most of the England squad will be heading on holiday after the Senegal match, Chalobah and his Chelsea team-mates will be going to the US for the revamped Club World Cup. He said: 'This is the time after the internationals you probably want a holiday. But it's going to be physically tough, it's a different environment. 'But it's important, us as players want to be competing at the highest level and playing against very good teams. This is what footballers want to be doing, and hopefully getting a trophy.'
