Groundnut worth 31.6L stolen from warehouse, 4 detained

Rajkot: More than 1,200 sacks of groundnut procured at the minimum support price (MSP) were stolen from a govt-rented warehouse in Jetpur of Rajkot district. Police have detained four suspects, including a security guard and a former contracted employee, in connection with the theft. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The theft came to light during a routine inspection of the Jetalsar village warehouse, which found that only 56,388 of the 57,600 sacks stored were still there. The missing 1,212 sacks (each weighing about 50kg), valued at Rs 31.6 lakh, had been procured by the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED). The warehouse, rented on Dec 5, 2024, did not have CCTV cameras, and its security was outsourced to an Ahmedabad-based agency. Amitkumar Bishnoi, a technical assistant with the Central Warehousing Corporation, lodged a complaint stating the groundnut was likely stolen gradually over several months. Jetpur taluka police registered a case under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Sections 305(A), 331(3) and 331(4). Investigating officer Ajitsinh Herma said the theft appears to have been carried out over two or three months.

Indian vegetable oil body demands review of Nepal imports, packaging rules

The Indian Vegetable Oil Producers Association (IVPA) on Friday called on the government to review duty-free imports of refined oils from Nepal and reinstate standardised packaging for edible oils, saying current policies hurt domestic processors. The demands came at the end of a two-day global roundtable marking IVPA's 50th anniversary, where the industry body highlighted concerns over Nepal's exports flooding northern and northeastern Indian markets. "This not only undercuts domestic processors and refiners but also suppresses farmgate prices for oilseeds and contributes to underutilisation of processing capacities," IVPA said in a statement. The association proposed channelling zero-duty imports through government agencies like the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (Nafed) and other state agencies as a potential solution. IVPA also urged the government to reintroduce standard packaging sizes for edible oils, saying the current variety of pack options creates consumer confusion over pricing. On market outlook, IVPA said palm oil prices remained consolidated around current levels, with discounts to soybean oil likely to persist. It predicted Indian mustard price rallies would cool as the government releases stocks. Globally, sunflower oil prices may ease as Black Sea region crops return to normal levels, the association said. IVPA President Sudhakar Desai led the event discussions. The association emphasised that given increasing global biofuel mandates, India should pursue higher domestic oilseed production through incentivised minimum support prices.

MSP boost: Moong, groundnut procurement approved under price support scheme

Agriculture minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has approved a proposal to purchase 54,166 tonnes of moong and 50,750 tonnes of groundnut crops under the price support scheme (PSS). The PSS is usually implemented when prices of notified pulses, oilseeds and copra fall below the MSP (minimum support price) during peak harvesting periods, and is intended to ensure farmers receive remunerative prices for their crop. The minister also approved a 15-day extension of the procurement period in Andhra Pradesh till 26 June. While the groundnut will be procured from Uttar Pradesh for the summer crop season 2025-26, the moong will be procured from Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat, per a government media release. The MSP for summer moong (green gram) for the 2025-26 season has been increased to ₹ 8,768 per quintal from ₹ 8,682 in 2024-25. Also, the MSP for groundnut has been set at ₹ 7,263 per quintal for the marketing season 2025-26. This represents an increase of ₹ 480 compared to the previous year. In order to incentivize farmers and enhance the domestic production of pulses while reducing the country's dependence on imports, the government has permitted procurement of Tur (Arhar), Urad, and Masur under the PSS up to 100% of the production of the respective state for the procurement year 2024-25. Furthermore, in the Union Budget 2025, the government announced the continuation of this initiative for an additional four years, up to 2028-29, wherein procurement of these pulses will be undertaken up to 100% of state production through central nodal agencies, namely National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) and National Cooperative Consumers' Federation of India (NCCF), with the aim of achieving national self-sufficiency in pulse production. The Centre is implementing the integrated Pradhan Mantri Annadata Aay Sanrakshan Abhiyan (PM-AASHA) scheme, which encompasses the PSS, price deficiency payment scheme (PDPS), market intervention scheme (MIS), and price stabilisation fund (PSF). The overarching objective of this initiative is to ensure assured and remunerative prices for farmers' agricultural produce, thereby protecting their income and securing their livelihood against market fluctuations. To be sure, India follows three cropping seasons—rabi, kharif, and summer (or Zaid). The summer window, which runs from March to June, sits between the main rabi harvest and the onset of kharif sowing. These crops typically grow on irrigated land and have shorter growing cycles, making acreage trends a useful early signal of agricultural momentum.
