Diarna Fair showcases women's handmade products
To help market handmade goods by Egyptian women, Diarna Fair is currently running from 13 to 28 February 2025 at Cairo Festival Mall in the Cairo eastern satellite town of al-Tagammu al-Khamis (Fifth Settlement). The Fair opening was attended by Maya Morsy, Egypt's Minister of Social Solidarity; Manal Awad, Egypt's Minister of Local Development; Nabila Makram, Head of the Technical Secretariat for the National Alliance for Civil Development Work; Hala al-Said, Advisor to the President, as well as public and media figures, along with a group of businessmen and investors. Egypt's National Council for Women participated in the opening ceremony, represented by its Chairperson deputy, Dr Nesrin al-Boghdady. Dr Baghdady highlighted the importance of Egyptian women's participation in the development of handmade products, noting that the exhibition is a real opportunity to empower women economically and support traditional goods. She praised the quality of the products on display which, she said, reflect the skill of Egyptian artisans in various fields and showcase the value of the products created by those women. The opening was held to the tunes of Sinai songs and the ululation of exhibitors from all over Egypt. The fair hosts more than 400 male and female exhibitors, showcasing their handmade, traditional products. The guest of honour is Sinai, with this round of Diarna casting special light on various traditional and heritage Sinai products, in addition to other traditional handmade items such as arabesque woodwork, copperware, and glass crafts. On sale at the fair are also goods on demand in the holy Muslim month of Ramadan, which begins 1 March this year; the Ramadan goods include home decorations, and traditional garments and jewellery. This year's edition is held in partnership with Cairo Festival City Mall under sponsorship of AlexBank 'Intesa Sanpaolo Group', Sawiris Foundation for Social Development, and Drosos Foundation. 'Diarna', literal for 'Our Homes', started off in 1958, sponsored by the Ministry of Social Affairs—today the Ministry of Social Solidarity—under the name 'Productive Families Fair'. The aim was to market products of cottage or home-based industries in order to help families increase their income. It has steadily grown, today featuring products from all of Egypt's 28 governorates, and has expanded to include goods produced by craftsmen and micro industries, also a few public sector companies that sell at discounted prices personal and home products in high demand by the public. It now opens in various cities across the country at different times of the year, generating good revenue. Generous Ramadan!
Elham Aboul Fateh As the month of Ramadan approaches, we used to be worried due to the rise in prices and their crazy jumps. I hope this year will be different after the Prime Minister announced prices control and a social protection package. I hope that the social package and the plans to control the prices of products will be announced. Traders exploit the month of Ramadan, the month of goodness, feeding, worship, eating, prayers, and gathering around soap operas, to raise the prices. We know that every increase in the salaries is accompanied by madness in prices and exploitation by traders, so the citizen does not feel it. Therefore, I hope that there will be monitoring by consumer protection authority and by the anti-monopoly agency. Measures must be taken against those who try to exploit people during the holy month and we should boycott greedy merchants so the protection programs achieve their expected results, especially since the Ministry of Supply launched 'Welcome Ramadan' markets with 30% discounts, offering all the goods and products that the citizen needs. Despite the good news, the question still raised about the details of the expected social protection package, and whether it will include all segments of society, including employees, pensioners, and beneficiaries of the 'Solidarity and Dignity' and 'Decent Life' programs. Well, social solidarity in Egypt is clear during the blessed month, when Mawaid el-Rahman, or charity iftars, Ramadan bags, and boxes are spread, along with convoys of the National Alliance for Civil Development Work that are launched again in North Sinai under the slogan 'One Hand.' . These are comprehensive convoys that provide Ramadan boxes, health care, and financial support, and they tour all governorates of Egypt. These efforts show the spirit of love and compassion experienced by the Egyptians, and demonstrate the state of faith that drives young people to go out to the streets before sunset to break the fast of the people. This is a case that allows goodness to reach every low-income home. Oh God, make it a month of goodness, blessing, joy and happiness for all Egyptians. Happy returns.
