India records 260 positive cases for doping in 2024

The National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) is likely to top the charts for doping cases in 2024, with the Sports Ministry revealing during Question Hour in the Rajya Sabha that 260 Indian athletes have tested positive. These 260 cases, from 7,466 tests conducted, are expected to be the highest ever recorded in the country, surpassing the previous mark of 224 in 2019. READ | India tops doping charts with 213 positive cases in 2023 It was only in June that it was revealed India had registered 213 positive cases in 2023, according to a report by the World Anti-Doping Agency. Responding to Rajya Sabha MP Imran Pratapgarhi's question on whether the government is aware of the rising number of anti-doping violations involving Indian athletes in recent years, Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said the government 'is fully committed to curbing the menace of doping in sports.' Athletics once again topped the list of sports with the most positive cases, recording 76 compared to 61 in 2023. Weightlifting followed with 43, wrestling with 29, and boxing with 17.

India's doping crisis is threatening its dream of hosting 2036 Olympics

Country's athletes have had one of the worst records in testing positive for banned substances New Delhi Listen to This Article The International Olympic Committee early this month told India doping could jeopardise its bid to host the 2036 Summer Olympics. The problem is severe and the government recently tabled a Bill in Parliament to grant greater independence to the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA). The Bill amends the National Anti-Doping Act of 2022, which could not be implemented due to World Anti-Doping Agency's concerns about 'government interference' in NADA. Of the major nations that each collected more than a thousand samples to test for doping in 2023, India had the highest positive share (3.8 per cent). In the last 10 years,

Anti-doping bill now in line with WADA demand

New Delhi: Sports minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Wednesday tabled the amended National Anti-Doping Bill in the Lok Sabha with a view to provide greater 'operational independence' to the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) as prescribed by World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). (Photo by Marc BRAIBANT / AFP) (AFP) Among the highlights of the Bill is the retention of the contentious National Board for Anti-Doping in Sports, albeit its powers have been curtailed. The Board will no longer have the NADA appeals panel under its jurisdiction as was the case in the original act passed in 2022. These provisions were flagged by WADA as signs of government interference, leading to a delay in the Act's implementation. The Board, in the previous Bill, was empowered to constitute the appeal panel and 'oversee the activities' of NADA. That act could not be implemented as WADA objected to 'government interference' in NADA's functioning. The amended bill seeks to 'enhance institutional and operational independence of the National Anti-Doping Appeal Panel and the National Anti-Doping Agency to ensure autonomy in their decisions pertaining to operations, investigations and enforcement activities.' 'The Director General or any other staff member of the Agency shall have operational independence from any National Sports Federation, International Federation, National Olympic Committee, National Paralympic Committee or any Government department or agency with responsibility for sport or anti-doping,' the amended bill states. The amendments were imperative to ensure that India does not end up being suspended by WADA that has been keeping a close watch over NADA in recent years. The introduction of the amended bill comes shortly after India emerged as the top country in terms of total doping tests conducted in 2023 among nations that analysed 5,000 or more samples, according to WADA figures. In 2023, India's positivity rate stood at 3.8%, with 214 Adverse Analytical Findings (AAFs) out of 5,606 samples tested. This marked an increase in both sample size and positivity rate compared to 2022, when 3,865 tests yielded a 3.2% positivity rate.

Indian shot putter Jasmine Kaur provisionally suspended by NADA after failed dope test

Indian shot putter Jasmine Kaur has been provisionally suspended by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) for failing a dope test, according to the latest list of athletes placed under provisional suspension. According to PTI, the 22-year-old, who won gold at the National Games in Dehradun earlier this year with a personal best throw of 15.97 metres, tested positive for Terbutaline — a stimulant commonly found in cough syrups. The Punjab athlete had also secured second place at the Inter-University Games last year with a best effort of 14.75m. Meanwhile, wrestler Nitika, an Under-20 World Championship silver medallist, has been handed a four-year ban, with her period of ineligibility effective from May 28 last year. Kaur and Nitika's suspension follows the high-profile ban of Paris Olympian, Asian Championship silver medallist and junior world champion wrestler Reetika Hooda a couple of days ago, as reported by the Indian Express. Reetika, a promising heavyweight wrestler in the 76 kg category and one of the few from her country to succeed in higher weight classes, was provisionally suspended on July 7. This action followed a positive doping test from a urine sample collected by NADA during selection trials in New Delhi. Reetika was scheduled to leave next week for the Ranking Series tournament in Budapest, starting July 17, and later in the World Championships in September. However, the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) officials said she has been asked to leave the ongoing national camp at the Indira Gandhi Stadium in New Delhi. It is also learnt that the federation officials summoned the other wrestlers at the national training camp and cautioned them about indulging in career-threatening activities. 'We have reminded them to stick to the supplements that are officially procured and are properly tested. We have also alerted them that there is zero tolerance for doping and it could very well end their careers,' a source told the Indian Express.
