3 arrested on P.E.I. in connected with national child porn investigation
The Prince Edward Island arm of a national operation to fight child pornography has led to charges against three people. Two men aged 60 and 24 are charged with possession of child pornography and transmitting child pornography, while a youth is facing charges of possessing and distributing child pornography, according to an RCMP news release Wednesday. "This is certainly a computer-driven offence," Cpl. Gavin Moore, the force's spokesperson on P.E.I., said in an interview. "These are crimes that do occur online. Individuals who partake in these crimes trade amongst each other.... "Ultimately it means victims of these crimes can have images shared to a number of individuals around the world." Search warrants executed on P.E.I. led to the three suspects being charged. They are all scheduled to appear in court on different days in April, with the 60-year-old man appearing in Summerside provincial and the other two in Charlottetown. "Our priority is protecting children from online predators who exploit digital platforms to commit devastating crimes," Cpl. Robert Yaschuk of the P.E.I. RCMP Internet Child Exploitation Unit was quoted as saying in the news release. "Every case we investigate is a step toward ensuring that offenders are brought to justice." The national operation code-named Project STEEL was led by the Ontario and Quebec provincial police forces and the RCMP's National Child Exploitation Crime Centre. The news release said it grew to involve 63 police agencies across Canada, with action taken from Feb. 17 to 28. "To date, 106 individuals have been arrested and 37 children have been safeguarded," a March 5 news release about the national operation said, adding that a total of 1,132 electronic devices were seized. "These are real people. These are people who are victims," Moore said. "These are people who are deeply affected for the rest of their lives about what has happened."

P.E.I. man sentenced for sharing intimate image with undercover officer posing as a child
Social Sharing Warning: This story contains details some may find disturbing. A 24-year-old Scotchfort man has been sentenced to one year in jail and two years probation after earlier pleading guilty to luring and sending a sexually explicit image to a child. Henry Donald Crabbe believed the person he was corresponding with on a messaging app called Kik was a 12-year-old girl — but it was actually an undercover police officer. On Wednesday, Judge Nancy Orr sentenced Crabbe to one year in jail for each of the charges, to be served concurrently, and two years probation. The judge said she hoped the sentence would send a message to others acting inappropriately online: "If you get caught, the consequences are extremely significant." Crabbe will also have to undergo counselling and he can't have contact with people aged 16 and younger unless it's supervised by an adult who has been assessed and approved by his probation officer. As well, Crabbe must provide a DNA sample and remain on the National Sexual Offender Registry for 20 years. His use of the internet is also being restricted. In June 2024, Crabbe was using the messenger app's random chat function to contact people he didn't know. In the incident that led to the charges, he sent an unsolicited photo of his genitals to someone posing as a 12-year-old girl. That person turned out to be an undercover police officer from the West Midlands Regional Organised Crime Unit in the United Kingdom. That unit sent the digital files to Canada's National Child Exploitation Crime Centre, which contacted the RCMP on P.E.I. The IP address from which the messages had been sent was eventually connected to a home where Crabbe was staying. Police also matched his profile photo on Kik to an image from his driver's licence. Court heard that Crabbe was active on the messaging app until two days before his arrest in November. Crabbe had no previous record. On Wednesday, he told the court he regrets all of his actions.

Former Scout leader, educational assistant sentenced to 4 years in prison on child pornography charges
Social Sharing A former Scout leader and educational assistant at an elementary school in Hamilton has been sentenced to four years in prison after pleading guilty to the possession and making of child pornography. Paul Goodman was sentenced on Wednesday in an Ontario Court of Justice courtroom. "This is a difficult sentencing. Mr. Goodman is a 54-year-old man who abused a position of trust," Justice Stephen Brown said Wednesday morning. Goodman is facing three years for possession of child pornography and one year for making it, minus the two days he's already served in custody. He was initially also charged with making child pornography available. Hamilton police said in April 2022 they started investigating after getting a tip from the National Child Exploitation Crime Centre. A search warrant was executed earlier that year and police say they found evidence of child pornography on computer devices. Goodman had been a volunteer with Scouts Canada since 2000, according to the organization. Chair of the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board Pat Daly said at the time the board was "shocked and deeply disturbed" by the charges.
