Spencer was considered a rising star in the tight-knit world of figure skating, a sport he mastered and quickly excelled in after he was inspired by Olympic skater Nathan Chen, his father, Douglas, recalled in an interview last month. 'His fascination quickly turned into unrelenting pleas for his parents to take him to the outdoor skating rink in Providence, R.I.,' his obituary says. 'On one such occasion, his skating time was cut short due to a scheduled performance. Disappointed but curious, he stayed to watch. While the show featured elite Olympic and U.S. champion skaters, Spencer was particularly drawn to a skater his age named Patrick Blackwell, whose grace and skill left a lasting impression. Christine, 49, meanwhile, was a 'creative powerhouse,' and was known as an 'outstanding quilter' who spent her time volunteering at a local animal rescue organization, Douglas said. 'As she transitioned into motherhood, her creative pursuits also diversified and blossomed,' her obituary states. 'These creative chapters are too many to list, but her photography, quilting, knitting, and home decor talents brought particular joy to everyone in her life.' With the post, Douglas shared a photo of the family of four, each of them making a funny face. 'Life was chaotic and messy at times,' he wrote. 'Maybe even most of the time. But it was also beautiful.' Advertisement Material from a previous Globe story was used in this report. Christopher Gavin can be reached at
