Parliament panel visits BHU, reviews academic practices
Varanasi: The parliamentary standing committee on education, women, children, youth and sports conducted a study visit to
Banaras Hindu University
and IIT-BHU on Tuesday.
Led by Rajya Sabha Member Digvijay Singh, members from both the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha held meetings at the central office of the university with BHU and other higher education institutions.
Committee members included MPs Bikas Ranjan Bhattacharya, Bheem Singh, Rajiv Rai, Rekha Sharma, Brijmohan Agrawal, Amardev Sharaddav Kale, Hemang Joshi and Shobhanaben Mahendrasingh Baraiya. The meeting was attended by SK Barnwal, additional secretary, ministry of education, Union govt, Acting Vice-Chancellor of BHU Prof Sanjay Kumar, director of Institute of Medical Sciences BHU Prof SN Sankhwar, director of Institute of Management Studies BHU Prof Ashish Bajpai, director of IIT-BHU Prof Amit Patra, director of apprenticeship training board, Kanpur, Vivek Kumar, registrar of central university, Allahabad, Prof Ashish Khare, dean-teaching of Motilal Nehru NIT Allahabad Prof Lakshmi Kant Mishra and Kashi Vidyapith VC Prof AK Tyagi, representing the higher education department of the Uttar Pradesh govt.
The meeting reviewed best practices, key achievements and challenges (financial, human resources, space and administrative) in the teaching, industry-academic collaboration and research ecosystem of higher education institutions.
After the meeting, committee members visited the 'CDC Building,' where they were briefed on various aspects of research and innovation at the university. They toured the 'Student Activity Centre' and 'Precision Engineering Hub (PEH)' at IIT-BHU, which was crucial for understanding academic and technical innovations.
Earlier, the committee members received a grand welcome at the main gate of BHU. They visited Malaviya Bhavan, where they paid floral tributes to the statue of the university's founder Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya.
The IIT -BHU also extended a warm welcome to the chairman of the parliamentary standing committee Digvijay Singh and its members. The event was organised at the institute's Student Activity Centre, where director Prof Amit Patra welcomed the committee members.
Prof. Patra provided a detailed introduction to the new initiatives undertaken by the institute under the National Education Policy NEP. He shared information about new academic programmes, research culture, advanced R&D activities and effective placement efforts. He reiterated the institute's commitment to continuously enhancing academic and research quality to meet global standards. Additionally, the delegation visited the state-of-the-art Precision Engineering Hub, where they observed technical expertise and innovation capabilities.
