Disparity in mark weightage for JRF & NET: PhD aspirants

Hyderabad: PhD aspirants, research scholars and student organisations have submitted a petition to Osmania University , demanding equal weightage for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and National Eligibility Test (NET) holders in admissions. They argue that, even under category 2 admissions, which are open to students with JRF, NET and State Eligibility Test (SET) qualifications, candidates with JRF qualifications are given an unfair advantage. "Under category 1 admissions, only JRF students are admitted. They have the opportunity to apply once every six months. Now, in category 2, OU is giving them an extra 5 marks, which will give them an unfair advantage. How is this fair?" asked Satya Nelli, a research scholar. He added that, during the 2022–23 admissions, both JRF and NET candidates were awarded 15 marks. However, this year, JRF candidates have been given an additional five marks. They urged the university to rectify the disparity in the weighting of marks allocated to JRF and NET holders under category 2 PhD admissions for the 2025 academic year. They claim that the recent change imposes an additional barrier for NET/SET holders, who are only eligible under category 2, as they now face a further disadvantage due to the unequal marking system.

Over 700 candidates register for DAVV PhD admissions, deadline extended

Indore: Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya (DAVV) received over 700 registrations for admission in PhD courses. The university is conducting the PhD admissions in two parts — National Eligibility Test (NET) based for various courses and Doctoral Entrance Test for engineering and pharmacy courses, DET is scheduled for June 16. It's the second time in a single academic session that the university is conducting admissions for doctoral programmes. The university extended the registration deadline to May 30 to accommodate more aspirants. The highest number of seats this year are available in management stream, which has 185 seats under the guidance of 49 research supervisors. Commerce follows with 111 seats and 27 guides. In contrast, subjects like biochemistry and economics have only three seats each. Despite the limited seats, economics has seen a sharp rise in demand, which could lead to stiff competition. For PhD admissions through UGC-NET qualifications, 519 candidates registered for 524 seats across 22 subjects. These include English literature, electronics, law, life sciences, Hindi literature, physical education, and others, with a total of 168 recognised research supervisors. For engineering disciplines, where admissions are through DET, 173 candidates registered for just 89 seats. Among these, pharmacy has the highest availability with 30 seats, while data science offers only one seat. Other streams like applied mathematics, applied physics, computer engineering, information technology, and mechanical engineering have limited seats and guides, adding to the competition. Experts believe the shift to NET-based PhD admissions in 22 subjects has raised the academic standards. Educationists said that NET ensures quality candidates, as it is one of the most challenging exams in the country. However, even after clearing NET, candidates will have to pass the rigorous Research Advisory Committee interviews in over 15 subjects to secure final admission. With varying seat availability across subjects, candidates may face intense competition in some areas, while finding easier entry in others. The main admission process will commence in June.

Meanwhile, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has formed a committee to explore the feasibility of conducting an in-house entrance exam for PhD admissions in Korean language, arts and aesthetics, and labour studies, university officials said. This is likely to be a one-time measure as these subjects are not covered under the University Grants Commission's (UGC's) National Eligibility Test (NET), prompting the university to seek alternatives. Admissions for the three PhD programmes remain uncertain as the ongoing admission cycle ends on December 4, leaving prospective students anxious.

In the previous cycle, the UGC NET June 2024 registration deadline was extended multiple times. Initially set to close on May 10, it was first extended to May 15, and subsequently to May 19, 2024. The fee payment deadline was also moved to May 20, 2024. Candidates were allowed to make corrections in their application forms from May 21 to May 23, 2024. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has uncovered that the evidence used to justify the cancellation of the UGC-NET exam held on June 19, 2024, was doctored. A screenshot of the question paper had circulated on Telegram, appearing to show a leak before the exam. However, the CBI's investigation revealed that the image was actually shared after the exam's first session and was manipulated to seem like it was posted earlier. This misleading evidence led the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C) to alert the UGC, resulting in the exam's cancellation.

NEET-UG plan: Transport of question papers under police escort, monitoring of coaching centres

i The Ministry of Education is holding a series of meetings with District Magistrates (DM) and Superintendents of Police (SP) from all States and Union Territories (UTs) to ensure there are no lapses in the upcoming medical entrance exam NEET-UG, sources said on Monday (April 28, 2025). The crucial exam is scheduled on May 4. It will be conducted in more than 550 cities and at over 5,000 centres across the country. The Ministry has been working on a fool-proof plan following alleged irregularities in last year's exam, including paper leaks, which put the exam integrity under scanner. Editorial | Cleansing NEET: On a recast test "To ensure smooth, fair and secure conduct of NEET-UG, a series of meetings have been held with DMs and SPs of all States and UTs. The district-level coordination committees are being fully activated to manage logistics, security and crisis response," a source told PTI. "There will be multi-layered frisking by district police in addition to NTA[National Testing Agency]-designated security at the centres. The transport of confidential materials like question papers and OMR [Optical Mark Recognition] sheets will be under full police escort. Coaching centres and digital platforms will be monitored to prevent organized cheating networks," the source added. Duty Magistrates are being deployed for mandatory inspection of all examination centres while there will be personal visits by DMs and SPs to examination centres to assess preparedness. On the line of fire over alleged irregularities in NEET-UG and PhD entrance (National Eligibility Test) NET, the Centre had last year set up the panel to ensure transparent, smooth and fair conduct of examinations by the NTA. While NEET-UG was under the scanner over several irregularities, including alleged leaks, the UGC-NET (University Grants Commission-National Eligibility Test) was cancelled as the ministry received input that its integrity had been compromised. Both matters are being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Two other exams — CSIR-UGC NET and NEET-PG — were cancelled at the last moment as a pre-emptive step.
