Scotland's best fish and chips crowned as Edinburgh restaurant tops list
Six restaurants across the country have been "standouts". Scotland's best fish and chip eateries have been named. The "standout" restaurants are situated all around the country. While National Fish and Chip Day may have already taken place on June 6, summer is the best time of the year to enjoy a fresh fish supper with delicious chunky chips. With the season only just beginning, experts have shared their picks for the top fish and chip restaurants around Scotland. On Thursday, June 5, Larder Magazine shared a list of "where to find the best" fish and chips in the country. A total of six restaurants are featured on the roundup. Coming in at number one on the list is Landy's Fish and Chips in Edinburgh. The restaurant is located on North Bridge in the heart of the Scottish capital. Landy's Fish and Chips is a restaurant and bar that describes itself as "Scotland's favourite chip shop" on its website. The venue was praised by Larder Magazine for its crispy batter and flaky fish, as well as its "generous portions and thoughtful touches like homemade tartare sauce". As reported by the Daily Record, Landy's Fish and Chips was named one of our "10 best fish and chip shops for a summer 2025 takeaway". We praised the eatery for its "modern and chic" interiors and "top-notch" food. Meanwhile, coming in at number two on Larder Magazine's roundup is Dune in St Andrews. The Fife town is home to a number of different chippies, but Dune was singled out for its varied menu. The magazine praised the restaurant's Market Fish and Chips dish in particular, describing it as "the catch of the day beautifully battered and served with seaweed tartare, curry sauce, peas and triple-cooked chips". Placing third on the roundup is Bertie's Proper Fish & Chips, also situated in Edinburgh. The family-friendly restaurant serves sustainably sourced fish, crispy golden chips, and a variety of Scottish-inspired sides and sauces. Larder Magazine applauded Bertie's Proper Fish & Chips for its battered haddock. The restaurant was also described as a top destination for locals and tourists alike. Elsewhere, The Jigger Inn in St Andrews comes in at number four on the magazine's list. The Jigger Inn, which is housed in a building dating back to the 1850s, serves up home-cooked food and a wide selection of Scottish beers. The inn earned praise for its one-of-a-kind location by the 17th hole of St Andrews' iconic Old Course. Meanwhile, its fish and chips was described as unique thanks to the batter made with The Jigger Inn's 'Jigger Ale'. Rounding out the list are The Grahamston in Glasgow and the Ochils Arms in Dollar, placing fifth and sixth respectively. Larder Magazine applauded The Grahamston for its modern flair and fish batter, while the Ochils Arms was singled out for its fresh haddock and relaxed atmosphere. The Larder Magazine website states: "From chic seaside spots to heritage pubs and modern chippies, here are six of Scotland's standout destinations serving up fish and chips worth travelling for." 150 year old chip shop in Scottish city praised as cosy and authentic with celebrity visitors
A Glasgow chip shop opened in 1875 and taken over by the Corvi family in 1938 became famous under Luigi Corvi Friday, June 6 marks National Fish and Chip Day, a perfect occasion for Brits to savour one of the nation's most beloved dishes. With thousands of chippies across the country, a fish supper remains a Friday night treat for many. Fish and chips first emerged as a popular meal in 19th century northern England before spreading nationwide. By the 1870s, it had reached Scotland, where one historic fish and chip shop continues to delight customers after nearly 150 years. Val d'Oro, a Glasgow institution, celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2025. Originally opened in 1875 on London Road at Glasgow Cross by the Beltrami family from Italy, the shop was taken over by the Corvi family in 1938. They renamed it from The Swiss Restaurant to Val d'Oro, a name it has proudly kept ever since. Under Luigi Corvi's stewardship, Val d'Oro earned fame not only for its food but for its unique charm. Known as the Singing Chip Shop Owner, Luigi entertained Celtic fans with opera songs on their way to Parkhead. His talent even led to a special invitation to sing for Queen Elizabeth during the opening of the Scottish Parliament in 2011. The shop has attracted a host of famous faces over the decades. Sir Paul McCartney stopped by in 1973 with his wife Linda, purchasing two fish suppers before his vegetarian days. Other notable visitors include Jack Mulroy, Larry Marshall, Jimmy Logan, Marti Pellow and Frankie Boyle. Earlier this year, Reform deputy chairman Richard Tice visited for a press event. Despite its age, Val d'Oro remains a firm favourite with customers, boasting a 4.4 rating on TripAdvisor and nearly 80 per cent of reviews awarding it a perfect score. Visitors have praised it as "perfecto," "cozy," "authentic," and "special." One enthusiastic reviewer said: 'This old style chippy is a Glasgow gem and if you're in the area I would highly recommend you pop in and experience the great food and immerse yourself in the local culture. "May this famous Glasgow institution continue serving the city for many years to come.' Another wrote: 'A real breath of fresh air in a world where everything is becoming so sterile. The food was absolutely delicious and the service was friendly and welcoming. Please never change!' Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Enrico Corvi, current manager and a Val d'Oro veteran of nearly 60 years, describes the shop as a "way of life." Speaking to the BBC last year, he said: 'We've had illustrious customers, but the main one is the great Glasgow public. "We still get people coming in that were coming in 60 years ago. Some of them had their first date in the Val d'Oro and a lot of our customers were brought up with us. We knew all the families. 'But it's a world away from what it was as a living, breathing part of the community. A lot of these bonafide Glasgow customers aren't around here anymore.'

Town treated to free chips with a twist powered by an electric car
In the aptly named Kent town of Deal, National Fish and Chip Day was celebrated with 300 portions of chips given away, as well as a limited run of battered fish. But it wasn't your ordinary chip shop, with the chippy being powered by two electric cars and fronted by TikTok's 'Chip Shop Diva', Destiny Harold. The Dacia Spring, which its makers say is the cheapest electric vehicle currently on the market, was the power behind the frying, in partnership with local chippy, The Blue Mermaid Fish Bar. It comes after a poll of 2,000 adults found fish and chips is the most popular treat on a British holiday, as well as cream tea and hot doughnuts. Others to feature in the top 20 list include Mr Whippy ice cream, Cornish pasties and mussels. Quintessentially British foods, such as fish finger sandwiches, strawberries and cream and a pie and mash also featured in the ranking. A spokesperson for car brand Dacia said: 'It was fun treating passers-by today and showing the power of our electric car, Spring, using its vehicle to load technology, which allows you to power external devices off the car's battery. 'It's no surprise we have a national day dedicated to the iconic meal that is fish and chips and the study shows just how much we love it and associate it with holidays by the seaside. 'Playing on the phrase 'cheap as chips' in line with our affordable car and being in the appropriately named Deal, was a great way to celebrate National Fish and Chip Day.' The research also found 41 per cent of adults describe such foods as nostalgic, while 45 per cent feel satisfied after eating them. When ordering a classic fish and chips, cod (48 per cent) and haddock (19 per cent) were the most popular choices, but 69 per cent simply order a portion of chips. It also emerged 44 per cent believe fish and chips is the 'food of the people' and 39 per cent said class doesn't impact how people eat it. While 46 per cent feel there is something nostalgic about eating the British staple with a wooden fork, which 33 per cent typically do, although 38 per cent opt to eat it by hand. Food psychologist, James Cornish, said: 'There are few things that unite the British public quite like fish and chips. 'Golden, salty, comforting, and steeped in history, this timeless dish is more than a meal - it's a national treasure. 'Loved across generations, social classes, and regions, it's one of those rare things that truly brings us together. 'There's a certain kind of magic in fish and chips - a simple meal that somehow carries the weight of memory, comfort, and delight. 'Maybe it's because we don't expect too much from humble food, but our delight is excelled through the delivering of more than we expected.'
