NIT-K 66th Foundation Day: Rainwater harvesting structure, turboshaft engine, and smart library inaugurated on campus
A rainwater harvesting structure, a turboshaft engine and a Radio Frequency Identification-based (RFID-based) smart library system were inaugurated at the National Institute of Technology–Karnataka (NIT-K) in Surathkal as the institute celebrated its 66th Foundation Day on Wednesday. The rainwater harvesting structure – NITKere – is spread over 2.5 acres and built on a low-lying area on the north-east side of the campus, can store 30 million litres of water. It was built with the financial support of alumni batches of 1974 and 1999. With 7,000 residents, NIT-K requires 1.2 million litres of potable water per day to meet its daily needs. Presently, 50% of the demand is met by the water supplied from Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC). It left the campus vulnerable to an acute shortage, especially during the summer months. Hence, the 'kere' (water body) was developed to mitigate the water shortage. The turboshaft engine provided by the Indian Air Force (IAF) helps in experiential learning and defence-oriented innovation. The engine is part of NIT-K Academy for Defence Adventure and Leadership (NADAL), which was launched to motivate students to join the Defence forces or other sectors and emerge as thought leaders, the institute said in a release. The RFID-based smart library system was introduced for book lending and return. The staff, students and alumni paid homage to the founder of the institute Ullal Srinivasa Mallya. Children of NIT-K staff who achieved academic excellence in Classes X and XII were awarded prizes during the event. Two merit scholarships instituted by the 1981 batch alumni were also conferred. Two staff members who completed 25 years of service to NIT-K were felicitated. B. Ravi, Director of the institute, retired Air Marshal B. U. Chengappa (PVSM and AVSM) who was an alumnus of 1969 batch of NIT-K, Niranjana Mahaballappa, global president of NITK Alumni Association spoke on the occasion. Mr. Ravi appreciated the love of the alumni for their alma mater, and highlighted their contributions. The Alumni Association held its central governing council conclave and annual general meeting on the occasion. More than 50 alumni converged from different parts of the country to chart the roadmap of the association.
