The team hosted a watch party Monday to see where they will be seeded after receiving an automatic berth in the tournament by a direct championship win last week. Staff Reports CASPER, WYOMING – 'Relentless' and 'Committed' were the words printed on the practice jerseys and t-shirts that the South Georgia Technical College Lady Jets wore during their 30-minute practice session prior to the start of the National Junior College Athletic Association Division 1 Women's Basketball Tournament in Casper, Wyoming. Advertisement Each of the 24 teams participating in the NJCAA Women's National Basketball Tournament got 30-minute practice sessions on the court at the Ford Wyoming Center, and SGTC Lady Jets head coach Jason Carpenter and his assistant coach Olivia Melvin made sure the Lady Jets were focused on the task at hand. 'This is what we have been working for all season,' said SGTC Athletic Director and Lady Jets head coach Jason Carpenter. 'Now we just have to execute.' The Lady Jets are ranked 22nd and considered the underdogs against the defending NJCAA 2024 National Champion Hutchinson Community College Blue Dragons. The Blue Dragons received an at-large bid to the tournament after losing in their region tournament. They were seeded 11th and bring a 28 – 4 record to the tournament. The Lady Jets are riding a 13-game winning streak and bring a 25 – 6 record to the tournament. They are also the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) regular season champions and the GCAA-NJCAA Region XVII Tournament Champions. Advertisement The two teams will meet at 6:45 (eastern time) on Wednesday, March 26th, which is the second day of the tournament. The tournament kicks off at 12 noon (eastern time) on Tuesday, March 25th. All the action can be viewed live at or on ESPN+. There will be a cost to view the game on the NJCAA site. The winner of the Hutchinson – South Georgia Tech game will face 6th seeded Indian River on Friday, March 28 at 6:45 Eastern time. #

Triton College hosting NJCAA women's and men's basketball tourney

Triton College is playing host this week to a National Junior College Athletic Association tournament, featuring three days of women's and men's championship basketball. From Wednesday to Saturday, the NJCAA Region 4 Division I men's and women's tournaments will be played in the George T. Jorndt Athletic Complex Gymnasium at the community college in River Grove, according to a Triton College news release announcing the event. The women's semifinals are set for Wednesday. The men's semifinals are scheduled for Thursday. Then the championship games for each will hit the court Saturday. Additionally, all the games will be streamed live at no charge. The Triton men's basketball team is 23-3 and ranked No. 4 in the latest NJCAA poll, the release explains. The Trojans look to win their fourth regional title in the last five seasons. Likewise, the lady Trojans are having a 23-4 season and aiming for their first regional title since 2021, according to the release. General admission is $5 and children under age 12 enter for free.

Miami Dade College women's basketball coach inspires next generation on and off court

MIAMI — Miami Dade College women's basketball coach Susan Summons is making history and inspiring the next generation on and off the court. "I've always been focused on creating champions not just for a minute, not just for an hour, not just for a day, but for a lifetime," Summons said. Summons is in her 39th year of coaching the MDC women's basketball team. She recently achieved a historic milestone in women's sports with 700 wins among active basketball coaches. She is the only Black woman in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) to do it. Summons' players said that she helps them develop confidence, resilience and a sense of purpose. "For me, in my eyes, she's more so a mother figure," said Shameir Quimby. "She's always there spiritually, mentally, physically. I could call her at two or three in the morning and she'll pick up. Whatever I need." A former professor, Summons was recognized as one of the Top 100 Most Influential Sports Educators in America by the Institute for International Sport. Her commitment to education and sports has earned her seven Hall of Fame honors, underscoring her profound impact. Summons said she loves what she does. "It's passion," she said. "It's passion that drives me. It's Passion that inspires me."
