Mets Morning News for May 25, 2025

Meet the Mets After Friday night's marathon debacle, David Peterson gave the Mets just what the doctor ordered in a 5-2 victory over the Dodgers, pitching 7 2⁄ 3 brilliant innings that included three strikeouts of Shohei Ohtani. The Dodgers got out to an early lead, but the Mets put up a three-run fourth against Tony Gonsolin punctuated by a Juan Soto RBI double off the left-center field wall. Thanks to Peterson's strong outing, the Mets were able to give the rest of the bullpen some much needed rest and go right to Edwin Díaz in the eighth for a four-out save and he delivered a vintage Díaz performance, setting down all four batters he faced in order—three of them via the strikeout. Kodai Senga takes the mound for the Mets in tonight's rubber game on Sunday Night Baseball. Advertisement Choose your recap: Amazin' Avenue, NY Post, Newsday, Daily News, The Athletic, ESPN Having completely emptied their bullpen on Friday night, the Mets made a couple of roster moves before the game yesterday. Génesis Cabrera was designated for assignment and Brandon Waddell was brought up. The Mets also designated José Azócar for assignment and replaced him with a more offensively potent bench player in Jared Young, who had eye-popping numbers in Triple A. Brandon Nimmo first experienced the current bout of neck stiffness he is dealing with while making breakfast on Friday, which made it difficult for him to turn his head to face Kershaw in Friday night's game. This has been a chronic issue for Nimmo ever since 2019 and he thinks he will bounce back soon. Frankie Montas began a rehab assignment with the Brooklyn Cyclones yesterday, as he tries to make his way back from a lat strain he suffered in spring training. Advertisement Francisco Lindor was celebrated prior to last night's game for reaching ten years of service time. Around the National League East The Phillies won their ninth straight game, putting up three runs in the top of the eleventh to beat the A's 9-6 in extras. Aaron Nola did not throw a planned bullpen session yesterday because he is still experiencing soreness in his sprained right ankle. The Nationals blanked the Giants 3-0 thanks to eight dominant scoreless innings from Jake Irvin. Ronald Acuña Jr. homered yet again in the Braves' commanding 7-1 victory over the Padres at Truist Park. The Braves acquired infielder Jonathan Ornelas from the Rangers for cash considerations. Advertisement Cal Quantrill pitched just 3 1⁄ 3 innings in the Marlins' 6-2 win over the angels, but Janson Junk pitched the final five innings of the game in relief for Miami to earn the save. Junk had just been called up from Triple A. Around Major League Baseball Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman was placed on the 10-day injured list with a quad strain that Alex Cora called 'a significant injury' that will likely cost Bregman a lot of time. In his absence, the Red Sox called up top infield prospect Marcelo Mayer. The problem? Mayer's car keys have been missing for weeks and so he had to hitch a ride from a WooSox clubhouse attendant for his major league debut at Fenway Park. The Guardians placed Hunter Gaddis on the bereavement list following a death in his family. To take his spot in the bullpen, the Guardians promoted righty Nic Enright, whose big league dreams were stalled by a cancer diagnosis in 2022. But now, less than three years later, he has made it to The Show. This Date in Mets History On this date in 1979, the Mets played a game against the Pirates that ended in a tie due to a thick fog descending over the ballpark that limited visibility such that continuing play was not possible and would not dissipate. MLB Sends Chris Sale Message After Historic News on Thursday

MLB Sends Chris Sale Message After Historic News on Thursday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Chris Sale has long been recognized as one of Major League Baseball's premier pitchers. He has eight All-Star game appearances to his name, and he played on that 2018 Boston Red Sox team that won the World Series championship over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Advertisement Now 36, he remains a vital asset for the Atlanta Braves. On Thursday, during a doubleheader against the Philadelphia Phillies, the Braves dropped the first game 5-4 but rebounded impressively to dominate the second contest, winning 9-3. During that second contest, Sale recorded his 2,500th career strikeout in fewer games than any other player, and MLB honored that accomplishment on its official X account. The Braves, who won the world championship in 2021, have struggled so far this season, especially since star right fielder Ronald Acuna Jr. was out of action until just days ago. They hold a 26-29 record, which puts them in third place in the National League East and 9.5 games behind the first-place Phillies. Braves' AJ Smith-Shawver diagnosed with torn UCL in rotation crusher

The Braves' starting rotation took a major hit Friday. Atlanta rookie right-hander AJ Smith-Shawver suffered a torn UCL during his start on Thursday and is expected to miss the rest of the season and most of 2026, according to USA Today. reported that the team and Smith-Shawver are still deciding if he'll undergo Tommy John surgery or an internal brace procedure. Advertisement AJ Smith-Shawver of the Atlanta Braves leaves the mound in the third inning during the game between the Atlanta Braves and the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park on Thursday, May 29, 2025. MLB Photos via Getty Images Smith-Shawver, 22, reportedly heard his throwing arm pop shortly after getting hit on the foot by Phillies infielder Bryson Stott's line-drive comebacker. He would stay in the game to face Trea Turner but looked noticeably uncomfortable throughout the at-bat before exiting after retiring him on a fly ball to left field. Advertisement After the game, Braves manager Brian Snitker admitted, 'It doesn't look good.' 'I don't think it had anything to do with [the line drive],' Snitker told reporters. 'I think it's just a byproduct of his velocity. It's been very, very good. I think it was just something that was destined to happen.' The hard-throwing 22-year-old has been solid for the Braves this season, going 3-2 in nine starts with a 3.86 ERA and 42 strikeouts in 44 ⅓ innings. Atlanta Braves' AJ Smith-Shawver pitches during the second inning in the first baseball game of a doubleheader against the Philadelphia Phillies Thursday, May 29, 2025, in Philadelphia. AP Advertisement 'It stinks,' Braves catcher Sean Murphy said after the game. 'He's been throwing the ball well.' Smith-Shawver has been one of the top pitching prospects in Atlanta's system in recent years after being drafted in the seventh round out of Colleyville Heritage High School (Texas) in 2021. The injury is a major loss for the Braves, who are a disappointing 26-29, 9 ½ games back of the Phillies in the National League East before heading into their weekend series against the Red Sox.

U.S. tennis president Lew Sherr to leave USTA for New York Mets

Lew Sherr, the chief executive of the U.S. Tennis Association (USTA) is stepping down at the end of June to join the New York Mets as president of business operations. Sherr, a veteran of sports business in New York who previously held senior positions at Madison Square Garden, recently unveiled an $800 million redesign of Arthur Ashe Stadium and other parts of the Billie Jean King Tennis Center, the home of the U.S. Open. The plans include additional hospitality space and a new player performance center. Advertisement He has also spearheaded an effort to revamp the elite player development program for U.S. players, after former leading figures in that program criticized cutbacks by the USTA following the Covid-19 pandemic. In a recent interview, Sherr said the goal was to centralize the program, including the people who organize tournaments and the those who are in charge of running national and regional camps for children as young as 12 years old. During past last two years, Sherr has also been part of efforts by the four biggest tournaments in tennis, the Grand Slams, to restructure the sport. That plan was dubbed the premium tour and would slim the tennis calendar to a schedule based around the majors and the next tier of events, the ATP and WTA 1,000s (so named for the ranking points their winners get). Those efforts have put him at odds with the leaders of the men's and women's tennis tours, the ATP and the WTA. The majors gained momentum early last year, but have since been stymied by the same inertia that has stalled previous efforts to streamline the sport. Sherr took over the USTA in August of 2022 and had to carry out significant cuts after the organization went through the effects of having to stage the 2020 U.S. Open without spectators. The USTA has since recovered as attendance at the U.S. Open surpassed more than 1 million fans last year for the first time. Revenues from the tournament surpassed $500 million — revenues which the top players want to be shared more generously with them than they are currently. 'This is truly a bittersweet moment. Over the past 15 years, the USTA has been so much more than just a workplace — it has been a community, a purpose, and a passion,' Sherr said in a statement. 'While I will no longer be leading from within, I will always be cheering on the USTA and the work ahead. I'm immensely proud of what we've accomplished together, and even more excited to see where our talented team takes it next.' Advertisement After Sherr departs, USTA board chairman Brian Vahaly and chief operating officer Andrea Hirsch will serve as co-chief executives while the organization conducts a search for its next leader. Sherr replaces Scott Havens, who had been president of business operations at the Mets since 2023, and joins the team as they occupy second place in the National League East. Since purchasing the team in 2020, hedge fund billionaire Steve Cohen has become one of the highest-spending owners in baseball. In December, the Mets signed outfielder Juan Soto to a 15-year, $765 million contract, the largest in professional sports history.
