Ruben Amaro Jr. Thinks Long Term Deal is Top Priority for Phillies' DH Kyle Schwarber
Anyone who can be compared to Aaron Judge right now is having a great season in his own right. Kyle Schwarber is one of those exceptional few. With his 12th home run of the season Tuesday night, Schwarber tied Judge for the major league lead. He's also fourth in OPS (.999) and eighth in RBI (28) across MLB. All told, it's setting him up to be one of the top names on the free agent market this offseason. Advertisement But according to former Phillies' General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr., money isn't the main obstacle in the way of an extension. "It's not about the money; it's about the length of the contract," Amaro said on the latest episode of 'The Phillies Show.' "I can see it being a four or five-year deal if he keeps doing the things he's doing now... the man's gonna make his money, and he's gonna get length." Kyle Schwarber has mashed 155 home runs (including postseason) in a Phillies uniform. Only Aaron Judge has more since the start of Ray Seebeck-Imagn Images Schwarber is 32 years old but, as Amaro put it, seems to be getting better with age. He's accomplished the very rare trifecta of 100+ walks, runs scored, and runs batted in two seasons in a row, and his strong start to 2025 puts him on track to do so again. Advertisement He's also been an extremely important part of the Phillies core that's won a National League Pennant and played in the most postseason games the past three years. While the negatives - a high strikeout rate and poor defensive abilities - somewhat limit Schwarber, he is still a valuable piece for any club that fancies itself a championship contender. Whether the Phillies current front office values their DH enough to keep him for at least as long as his first deal remains to be seen. They also have to consider whether or not to let catcher J.T. Realmuto and pitcher Ranger Suárez walk as free agents - none of which are easy decisions. Related: Phillies' Alec Bohm Reveals Feelings Amid Slow Start

Former Phillies First Round Pick Signs With NL West Squad
A former Philadelphia Phillies top prospect is getting another shot on the other side of the country. Outfielder Mickey Moniak, whom Philly selected No. 1 overall in the 2016 MLB Draft, has signed a major league contract with the Colorado Rockies and will join the team immediately. Moniak had just been released by the Los Angeles Angels, where he was traded at the 2022 deadline. He hit .219 with 14 home runs and 49 RBIs for the Halos last year, and those offensive struggles continued during Spring Training. Advertisement The one-year deal, which is valued at $1.25 million, was first reported by Mark Feinsand and Thomas Harding: Moniak should compete for playing time in any of the three Colorado outfield spots. While his bat has been known to disappear for long stretches, he is fast in the field with a good glove. For a rebuilding squad that plays in the most hitter-friendly ballpark in baseball, that's worth trying out. Jun 4, 2022; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA; Philadelphia Phillies center fielder Mickey Moniak (16) reacts after hitting a single during the first inning against the Los Angeles Angels at Citizens Bank Streicher-Imagn Images The Phillies tried Moniak in center field for parts of three seasons, but he never came close to showing he could hit consistently. He was eventually sent to the Angels for pitcher Noah Syndergaard, and the Phils acquired his replacement, Brandon Marsh, in a separate move. Both of those guys would help the club clinch its first National League Pennant since 2009. Advertisement Moniak had one good year in Anaheim, hitting .280 in 85 games during 2023, but even that was cut short by injury. We'll see if Mickey gets any kind of ovation from the Philly faithful during the upcoming Rockies series. Although he didn't work out as expected, it wasn't due to lack of trying, and his former teammates never made any negative comments about him. Philly's home opener is Monday, March 31st, at 3 pm EST. The Rockies also play them on April 2nd at 6:45 pm and the 3rd at 1 pm. Related: Phillies Milestones To Watch for in 2025
