Former Phillies First Round Pick Signs With NL West Squad
A former Philadelphia Phillies top prospect is getting another shot on the other side of the country.
Outfielder Mickey Moniak, whom Philly selected No. 1 overall in the 2016 MLB Draft, has signed a major league contract with the Colorado Rockies and will join the team immediately.
Moniak had just been released by the Los Angeles Angels, where he was traded at the 2022 deadline. He hit .219 with 14 home runs and 49 RBIs for the Halos last year, and those offensive struggles continued during Spring Training.

The one-year deal, which is valued at $1.25 million, was first reported by MLB.com's Mark Feinsand and Thomas Harding:
Moniak should compete for playing time in any of the three Colorado outfield spots. While his bat has been known to disappear for long stretches, he is fast in the field with a good glove. For a rebuilding squad that plays in the most hitter-friendly ballpark in baseball, that's worth trying out.

The Phillies tried Moniak in center field for parts of three seasons, but he never came close to showing he could hit consistently. He was eventually sent to the Angels for pitcher Noah Syndergaard, and the Phils acquired his replacement, Brandon Marsh, in a separate move. Both of those guys would help the club clinch its first National League Pennant since 2009.

Moniak had one good year in Anaheim, hitting .280 in 85 games during 2023, but even that was cut short by injury.
We'll see if Mickey gets any kind of ovation from the Philly faithful during the upcoming Rockies series. Although he didn't work out as expected, it wasn't due to lack of trying, and his former teammates never made any negative comments about him.
Philly's home opener is Monday, March 31st, at 3 pm EST. The Rockies also play them on April 2nd at 6:45 pm and the 3rd at 1 pm.
